"Pragmatic Advice"
I read a lot of posts here about how to get the Light Sword.

The response is normally save just before you enter a map and then do it over and over until the random number generator turns your way.

Try this, get a wiz 8 editor and just edit the lights sword onto one of your team members at the appropriate time. ie when you are in Bayjin.

I hear cries even from down in here in Australia of "BUT THATS CHEATING!!!!!!!". You betcha.

But it is no more cheating than saving/reload until things turn your way and I can tell you that it's a damn sight more expedient.

I don't actually "cheat" when playing a proper game, I don't reload either. I just take what I get, which has never once been the light sword or excalibur. I did get the muramasa blade once. The Cane of Corpus is easy, never missed that one.

I have "cheated" whilst experimenting and trying things out, but I have never cheated in a proper game. Honest I haven't!!!!

1. "Carefyul where you tread"
This very advice has been offered before, as have attempts been made at defining "cheating", but they are not always taken well I too can not see the logic in reloading 100+ times to get *the* item I want the game to give me, especially if I can just *take* it (or give it to myself).

I too, don't "cheat" when playing, but will use editors to cut corners and enhance my overall playing experience .

2. "RE: Carefyul where you tread"
I would agree completly with LLevram. the whole idea of what is 'cheating' and what is not is very slippery. I like the method they came up with in Wiz 8 for chests. I have reloaded once or twice to see if I could get a better drop or something different from a chest but do not do it often. I usually just take what I get and go on. I have never seen a light sword in the game but sometime I will get one, probably when I have a party that cant use it.

3. "RE: Carefyul where you tread"
There are even people who feel that casting the same spell over and over again to increase realm skills is "cheating".

I use both a "Trainer" and an editor to test/verify in-game mechanics.

I do NOT however use them when playing for real.
I also don't reload the game to try for better items in chests.

I have yet to see the *Light* Sword or Excalibur in any of my "real " games either.

6. "Yes, fanfare has died down"
It was pretty hectic when the game first came out (bandwidth through the roof) ... but slow as of late.

As for Excaliber, it is definatley not 100% for me ... what is you party like that always gets it? Got a Lord? I had 4 fighters (I think no class changes as of then) at the time, a ranger and a bishop.

8. "RE: Yes, fanfare has died down"
I tend to run a party with an "elite" from each of the four magic realms....a Valk, monk, sam, and ninja...the other two spots(if I choose to fill them) tend to vary...

Glad to see you back Zaphod. Jersey is found mostly at Spydahs Web. She is on vacation right now. Have not seen Cpow in a long time. rbrown wanders in and out, I have seen him at VN a few times also. Lady A was off for a while, she came back and made a few posts and then disappeared again.

9. "Still here"
but not on weekends.

Yes, Jonno, editing is cheating unless Don Barlone has the *Legend* map and the gate won't open. Using the Mystery Menus and using quit/reload is not cheating because it is built into the program.

Undocumented features are still features provided by the game writers. Programmers can't anticipate how the users will use programs. I have a Cobol program that has been running for 23 years with a "hole" that allows the registrars to enter courses and grades that are not allowed by the district. The people I would inform about this "crime" are the ones insisting that the registrar put the course/grade on the kids record.

Whatever you call them, though, they are still provided by the game writers.

13. "Its a Wiz Gold bug"
Someone found when their cat walked across the keyboard. At various places in Wiz 7 (only in the Gold Version), if you hit various keys, you can get items ... some valid, some invalid. There are a number of posts about it in the Wiz 7 board.

15. "It is an Undocumented Testing Feature"
and when it works it is wonderful. It doesn't work for everyone so it appears to be a bug to some.

If you are running Wiz Gold v1.0, hit U (for Use) then uparrow (or leftarrow, it varies from machine to machine). This works best in New City. > uparrow brings up a static menu that should have a light sword in it. IF it works for you I can tell you where to find some neat stuff.

BEWARE the Bag Of ^%$.

Casting the same spell over and over isn't cheating, it's called practice, and practice makes perfect. I do the same thing when inspecting chests to improve my lockpick ability. After all isn't practice and homework what they teach in school to improve your ability to do certain things?

16. "RE: Carefyul where you tread"
I agree. I have heard it said that improving stealth by spending 2 hours in a battle (real time) just defending is not what the designers intended. Well, I think that the designers DID intend for people to improve skills with practice. If someone wants to waste 2 hours in a very boring battle, or lifting and closing a coffin, then they should be rewarded for it with improved skills. The game is also set up so that your skills improve pretty well without dedicating any time to an individual skill. So those who don't like to waste hours 'practicing', don't have to.

I think this whole argument about what is cheating and what isn't is pretty stupid though. It is a 1 player game. So do whatever you want to if it makes it more enjoyable. I only care about cheating if there is more than one player involved.
I think that using an editor to make super characters isn't that fun, but if someone else does, great. The important question to me is, What is fun? not What is cheating?
