"A warning about resting"
I learned something the hard way. I was in the Umpani camp. I rested a lot and bought stuff from the one seargent - spell books and armour and potions to combine to make $. I am lvl. 9, and when I got out, I found lots of monsters waiting for me. I got stuck behind NPCs who were also involved in the combat (after I reloaded a number of times, I eventually managed to change zones). I couldn't run until I got lucky and found a break in the monsters. And the combat would be very hard and not worth it; if I tried to fight, I could lose the battle after an hour of playing and have to reload! I faced 16 piercer modai, 3 sieges, something like 9 vines, 1 hogar, and 3 siege. It is annoying that monsters spawn and then sit where they can trap you - they just don't wander around that much. I would suggest one other thing: when going into a new zone, save right at the edge of the two zones, and DON'T save over that file! That way, if something goes tragically wrong and you are stuck, you can load this game and change zones to get different monsters.

1. "RE: A warning about resting"
As much as I love this game, this has to be the one element that I find most frustrating. I can understand that monsters spawn during rest, but sometimes after even one rest period, they come in hoards! Even the, if they are evenly matched... but often I find them to be even stronger.

I think this is something many of us learn early on, but the fact is, after a long hard battle when your resources are low, can you NOT rest?

I just started a new group, to see what it would be like to use mostly magic/ranged strategy. I have one of each mage (wiz, psi, alch, pr) a Ranger (Bow crits) and a Ninja (Throwing crits).

Lol, I'm having a hard time getting through the monastery. I just got through the first section where you open the door that connects to the entry area. I went back to the first room, (with the glass window overlooking the inner river) and rested.

Came out, 5 bats and two slimes meet me at the door. I used up all my Magic getting them, so I rested again. I wake up, and guess what? 5 rats, 6 roaches and 3 slimes. When I finished with them I was again depleted (my magic users are getting pretty impressive, but they are still very low level, and they can't do hand to hand worth anything) I didn't rest this time, just went out into the Monastery all empty and vulnerable. Did manage to kill a couple of monsters with just hand to hand, but it wasn't easy, and after that I absolutely had to rest, but I'm next to a new section, so I'm hoping the spawning is just on this level and not the next.

One thing I'll say, the game, even set on "easy" is a challenge! It's not just hash and slack, you really have to plan ahead and think things through.

Loving every minute,
judee

2. "Rest area ahead :-)"
You just have to pick the right spot. Of course, the right spot can usually only be identified by finding (via trial and error) the wrong spots

I find that monsters will only apporach so far, when you are back into a defensible position sometimes ... giving a "stalemate" position.

3. "learning something new about resting"
why are you resting the full 8 hours in one stretch? that will ALWAYS give the monsters the advantage, especially if you're in an open area.

if you must rest the full 8 hours ( because you're a good kid at heart ), go somewhere you can lock a door and always change your gameplay setting to novice for that night's rest. just remember to change it back to your regular setting upon waking.

but really, there's no need.

i find that the monsters always jump you in the last "half hour" or so anyway. just watch till your magic/health points are full.then wake yourself up. if you think you need the full 8 hours.... rest till you're halfway there, wake yourself up, stretch, move a bit, then hit the sack for the balance.

for being ambushed. But what I was talking about is the fact that monsters regenerate during rest periods.

I've always managed to find safe places to rest, so far I've never been ambushed. But as soon as I open that door, the beasties are at my doorstep ready to fight!

Guess they were busy procreating during the night!

The last couple of times I have played through the game, I only only rested once each game (to get my mook back).

I think my fastest time through was less than 1 week of game time to win. If I take the time to practice up and get all my chars maxed out, it takes me about 2 weeks of game time.

With over 1500 hours (real time) playing, this is my favorite (imported) party:

Human Lord
Hobbit Samurai
Faerie Ninja
Elf Ranger->Bard->Alchemist->Bard->Alchemist->Bard
Mook Alchemist->Gadgeeter->Alchemist->Gadgeteer->Alchemist
Human Bishop

Just wanted to make a few comments....

I always rest but never the full 8 hours unless absolutely necessary. I also always make sure to rest in a defensible position or somewhere I can close a door. Its also a good idea to save before you rest so if you do get some kind of ungodly mob you can always reload and rest again although I've never had to do that yet and my chars are level 18.

Changing to the easy setting will have basically no effect on monster spawning. It just makes it easier for you to hit the monsters while making it harder for them to hit you.

And for whoever said they have put in 1500 hours into this game is full of ##### unless of course they were on the beta team but even then I highly doubt it. It would take 62.5 days of playing 24 hours each day to get that many hours and the game hasn't even been out that long. Hell, even at 10 hours a day it would take someone almost 6 months to get that many hours.

Your math is correct. However, I have been playing for well over a year now.

No hard feelings ;)
