"Toughest monsters?"
I just went to Ascension Peak with my party, and I met some pretty tough characters like furor at level 23 and the Oak Guardian at level 34 along with several level 26 sprites. The thing is that my party was level 13-14 when I killed them. I don't have any of the 3 artifacts, I have only visited Arnika, and then went to Trynton and killed the breeders. Then I was bored with always fighting easy monsters so I went in search of some more difficult ones.

I was just wondering what the toughest set monsters were in the game. Hopefully I didn't already kill some of the toughest ones. They were hard battles where I had to use several resurrection powders, but like I said, I was only at level 14 so my 4 spellcasters didn't even have more than one level 6 spell each. Should I have been able to defeat them at that level? Will I still find tougher challenges throughout the game?

Also, since this is my first time through the game I am playing on the easy difficulty setting. Maybe that is why I was able to defeat them. I bet I would have been toasted by the level 34 Oak guardian on expert.

Anyway, I think this is a great place to level up. So far I have been leveling up after every 3-6 battles, but I might have to turn back soon for ingredients so my alchemist can make more resurrection powders, I only have 8 left. Or my priest needs to learn the resurrection spell.

There are a lot harder monsters in the game, though where you encounter them has a great deal to do with difficulty. That is, it's harder to fight in a big open field than a tight hallway; it's harder to fight spellcasters from a big distance away, etc.

The difference between easy and expert settings is, IMHO, fairly dramatic. Once you have the hang of the game, you should certainly try the harder settings (at least try normal!) before making judgements.

Thanks. I wasn't trying to make judgements about the game... I mostly wanted to know because if the monsters weren't going to get too much more difficult, I would change it from easy to normal. I know what you mean about fighting in an open field... As far as fighting spellcasters that are far away isn't always too difficult with my party because I have 4 spellcasters myself, with a fighter that uses a bow and a rogue that uses powders and potions. For ranged attacks, it seems like they all do well... at least until they cast eye for an eye on themselves. That makes all my spellcasters MUCH less effective. I don't find it worth doing 30-40 damage to 4 creatures with 300 HP's when it does 10-20 damage to my party of 6 with 50-60 HP's. Casting 4 spells in a round would kill 4 of my party off and only put them at half health.

As for judgements about the game, I think it is great. I just love it so far. I think that the battles I am doing right now are very difficult. In one battle I had to resurrect every member of the party before I finally won. I hate death cloud! Anyway, even on easy, it is quite the challenge to take on creatures 10-18 levels above you. I love the challenge though. There is no way I would ever consider it in IM mode. I am not sure if I will ever play an IM game because I just can't make myself run away from battles. I win through persistence. They kill them, I resurrect them and keep coming.

There are very tough monsters at every level that your characters are at. For example, in Trynton, if you play on expert, you may have a very tough battle with the leaf sprites, who get to go first and can cast devastating spells on your party. The fight where you will most likely die at in Trynton is with the oak saplings, who are rated as level 7, but really should be rated level 17! Their magic is way too powerful. The ocean too is filled with very dangerous creatures. The death rays, brother rays, and omega sharks can be devastating. But as you level up and become more powerful and more options become available, you will find that all battles become easier.
