"The Umpani and T'rang."
I don't want join both the Umpani or the T'rang because I do want to risk getting caught. Witch side should I join? Does it matter?

1. "RE: The Umpani and T'rang."
Doesn't make any difference as far as completing the game.

I wouldn't worry about getting caught, if you do you can also get XP for killing all of the T'Rang.

2. "Pick one"
Finish the game, then try it with the other. You find out different thins and it opens up different paths.

3. "RE: Pick one"
I suppose you can do one of four things.

1. Ally with both and try for peace.
2. Ally with the T'Rang.
3. Ally with the Umpani.
4. (My favorite) Ally with one or the other, after a certain point you can then just kill everyone of the T'Rang and Umpani.

Four different paths, as Llevram said, you will obtain different things depending on the path you take.

5. "Spoiler"
Join both, is the best. You can make quests for both and earn a lot of xp.
Problem one: when making alliance offers to the mook in arnika, you should take the offer of the umpani and NEVER the one of t'rang. If you take both, the mook blows you double agent status. After you enter the mook house, you put the fake astral dominae in the place of the moliri. Then you go to the t'rang and show the moliri to their leader. He then thinks you are aligned with the mook.
Problem two:
Always have about 10000 thousand gold in your pocket, because in the bar of arnika, the lady there (forgot name) will need money in order to stay quiet about your double agent status.
Problem three: don't go for the last mission of both umpani or t'rang. You should free their captured agents by the rapax and make peace between both races. Lots of xp points here.

6. "RE: Spoiler"
I gave both letters to the mook and my double agent status was NOT blown. Strange no? I gave the t'rang letter for the mook to let me in. After talking to him, I gave him the umpani letter too. He accepted that also. No questions asked.
