"I started my first Ironman team on Friday ..."
And I can't figure out what all the fuss is about. Its not IronMan, it is InconvenientMan.

Before I start a session, I go into the savegame folder and copy the Ironman savegame to my desktop. Then I start playing. When someone gets diseased (Pestilence Rats in the Monastery, Ranger and Valkyrie frequently) I just click on the gears and quit during battle. Restart Wiz 8 and I reload with the last autosave, usually 1/2 second before combat started. No one is diseased yet!!!

Am I missing something, or is the game going to punish me later on for "cheating"?

I don't know about later, never tried IM. There are just enough random crushes and crashes to make me wary. I just play with no reloads and call it IM.

Karma

I think the object of Iron Man is to make you think about how to play better, not make you think about how to get around Iron Man

I'm on my ninth try at an IM team. Currently further into the game than any of the other teams have gotten. I occasionally back-up the save game incase of my HD going kafluey (has happened before; I lost all of my Wiz7 saves from the first team I ever finished with ), but that's it. Disease, draining, death all get fixed within the rules of the game. It certainly makes you play different. Chameleon becomes useful as does blinding flash (neither of which I found much use for playing a regular game). Sneaking and running become a necessary way of life.

Am having fun and taking my time which also seems necessary because you don't want to risk losing your team by going somewhere too soon.

I am playing it very cautiously. The team was level 9, with xray, before they set foot out of the Monastery. I used blinding flash and sleep much more effectively the 2nd time out of the Monastery!

WE wouldn't have to get around IronMan if the monsters wouldn't attack with no sense of self-preservation. When you injure a normal predator it retreats, because injury means starvation and death. These things fight to the death, or flee for their life then come back alone and fight to the death. If the game were more realistic I might consider playing it more realistically. But then it would be boring and I wouldn't bother playing it.

And, if they really wanted to make it IronMan they would track the savegame names and times in a separate file (or registry entry) so they could detect "backup manipulation" and they would save the game in the middle of a battle. Which is why I wondered about "something" happening later.
