"What never to do when playing Wizardry 8..."
***MINOR SPOILER ALERT***

First of all, never build your initial party "around" the RPC's you believe you can hire at some point.I built a party w/o a bard or gadgeteer with the plan of recruiting Saxx and Madras.Well, this worked fine for the most part until I got to the underwater caves mission and guess what?

Saxx:"I ain't goin' in there!"

Madras:"I hear my momma calling me..."

Luckily the android is still where I left him at the umpani base camp and is only 3 levels behind the rest but I am forced to recruit that dog-awful trynnie ranger who is only level 6 to fill up my party and I am not sure she will venture into the underwater caves either(hell, for all I know the android may fear rusting himself!)!

*sigh*

Another thing...don't ever put valuable points into axe skill for your tank thinking you will get the components for the beastslayer and the fact that you spend much of the game swinging at air with "Demonsbane" will be worthwhile once you get that last component.

I have only run into 3 Bull picuses the whole game(and I did nothing but hunt for them outside trynton for hours and hours) and NONE of them dropped the egg.I don't even know if the axe is worth all this trouble but it doesn't matter now as I have given up on it.

This is all being typed with tongue firmly planted in cheek BTW,...I love this game.

The beastslayer axe is probably not worth much effort, but i have on two occasions had bull picuses drop two eggs in one battle. if i remember right, i always seem to get them if there are 2 bulls in one herd.

NO trynnie will go into the sea caves--they tend to be mistaken for fish food.
And in my game, I never even SAW a picus until Rapax Zoo.

if i remember right, the only bull picuss that dropped eggs were ones i found on the arnika-trynton road. never got one from the ones in and around trynton.

reminds me of a great fight-- went to talk to Rattus Rattus and we were attacked by something like 8 Juggernauts, 2 bull and 12 female picusi, great fight, used everything i had.

The trick to getting cowardly rpcs to go into area they refuse to is to let them leave, enter the are, set a portal just inside the area, pick them up again and teleport inside. Nothing happens except that they will loudly complain while you're in there. Nothing is funnier than talking to Z'ant with sax in the front row of your party.

What happens is a 20 point DECREASE in ALL stats magical and physical. Example: Madras the gadgeteer has managed to put together the Water Cannon and Jackhammer take him to Bayjin and he can't use them even though in the swamp outside he could.

You spend a lot of time and effort getting the pieces for the beastslayer axe. It has a cool name, but that's about it. As a weapon, it stinks. Stick with a good sword, like bloodlust (which you find early) or if you can find it, the Avenger, the light sword, even Fang.

One important thing to avoid doing is relaseing NPCs next to each other (unpatched version) I lost RFS-81 The T'rang samarai, Sexus, Urq, and Vi is stuck in the Phoonzang statue. I've lost 6 of em!

I discovered by chance there is a way to get your NPC's into areas they do not want to go. when i used the transporter in marten's bluff to go to the rift they went but when I went to the rift from the wilderness they would not. so try this: go into an area they will not go and place a portal then go get the NPC's you want and place them in the party and return to the area via the return portal spell. note that if it is under water make sure you have them in scuba gear.
