"Weapons & Monks"
Because of "ranged" battle short range whilst still the best way to clean up opponents aren't as important as thet once were in Wiz.

In fact for some monsters one definately does not want to get up close to. Ever had a Acid Wing flying snake squirts that stuff (when up close) that is so toxic anyone affected takes about 50 hit points damage a round ? And those bloody pesky plants - not that strong but a real pain to fight. Much better to fight these guys from a distance.

This is why the Giant Sword for Mooks (and Rapax Recruits) are so good, short plus extended - probably the strongest extended weapon in the game and one of the better short range weapons. A Mook F/V/L/S/R is a must for that reason.. I prefer Ranger, Mooks make sensational Rangers. With a good Bow the Ranger can then drill anyone from long to short - very powerful.

But the poor old Monk, Hands and Feet only, very limited as to other weapons, even some of the long range weapons are beyond him. He may be able to use the Zatoichi Bo but the game is 85% over by the time you get it. Always seems to be one class that just doesn't cut it in Wiz, in Wiz 8 it is monks.

Monks are not useless, but by any analysis they cannot make the starting 6 if one is picking the most "effective" party.

1. "Monks - effective while blind"
Without one, if your party is blinded no one can target. Not a common occurence, but a pain in the butt when it does happen.

2. "What options does one have then?"
I recently started my second party with a monk in it. I had the Zatoichi bo and the Vampire Chain in mind when I added him bt I knew that was way into the game, so what else is there? It would surely suck to have to wait until Rapax Castle to get him some nice stuff...

He's swinging dual nunchakas now, the best I've found so far, but if nothing better than a decent Bo or something is gonna come up soon I'm not so sure about him anymore. Sure could use a ranger in my party see... ;)

(PS. I'm headed for Trynton now, lvl 8 average)

3. "Monks and Psionics"
(I have found)
... are nearly as good as a ranger for searching, do to them usually having high Senses. Though they do lack the auto-search the Ranger has.

Monks dont get great ac for a fighter but with the cloak of many colors, jewelry, brilliant helm and robes of enchant they do alright. I like them mostly because they get one of the best and weapons in the game and you don't need to go anywhere to get it. When maxed out h2h is like +11 inititive and hits hard too, you will get more attacks than any other weapon combo for any class, and they start with this great weapon, you just have to develope it. They also get crits and stealth. Considering all that i don't think they are underpowerd at all.

I can't beleive you don't think monks cut it in Wiz8. My monk really wasn't that far behind my fighter (with Excaliber) when it came to total damage. I know it usually doesn't look like much when you only hit for 20 damage or so but if you add up the amount of time he/she hits it adds up very fast. I forget the exact numbers but when you get upwards of 16-20 attacks per round (hands & feet) they deal out major damage plus can critical strike and also have spells. Whats not to like?

I developed a monk to level 12 first time through. At that time he still was fairly "useless", I Concentrate in H&F, Stealth & Crit on level ups, can't remember the stats, but probably Strength and Vitality/Speed, as that was how I was thinking first time through in Wiz 8, particularly before I came to understand the importance of senses for some clases (not sure how this impacts a monk without going into the game and looking).

I really dig monks, i took RFS-81 ang gave him a Bo for Training until i got the Staff of Doom in the SE Wilderness, man he kicks some ass with that thing, like up to 3 Attacks with each 2 Swings and up to 60 Dam with the chance of Hex,Paralyze,Kill and critical strike,

The only monk I've used is RFS-81. He was excellent in my opinion. His hands and feet attacks are devestating. He attacks 3 hits 3 times, and attacks like 6. And when he connects he does between 20-50 everytime. He was doing around 200+ in damage every round.

I'd agree, ultimately a Monk is (though good) less useful than a Fighter, Samurai, Lord, or Valkyrie. Why?

Being able to fight Blind is pathetic. I've been blinded maybe once in my game so far...?

Psionics is not the best school... its most useful spells are Turncoat and Haste, both of which a Bard has access to (both Bard and Gadgeteer can also use some of the stronger mental/condition attacks). A Priest (or Lord or Valk) can also use Sane Mind, if that's an issue.

They do get Critical Hits, but so do all of my other fighters, because of their weapons. Compared to my other members, with the right equipment, they can do just as much Instant Death, Paralysis, etc., as a Monk, plus more damage.

Also not being able to use the Infinity Helm or Golden Breastplate, the Monk is just not quite as useful as most of the other classes. Getting RFS is enough, I wouldn't bother with crafting my own.

Any1 gave a minblast rod to a monk? Pretty nasty with its 75% stamina drain and good dmg. It's an extended polearm found at T'Rang base. Just kill every1 and u'll get it

If you want your monk to use polearms, you can get a mystic spear pretty early in the game. Give it a try. It'll prepare you for the dread spear.

I've been using the same party since Wiz 6. In the previous
2 installments he made a great fighter from the back row using
a bo or whip. In Wiz 8 equiping him is more of a problem. I
imported him with 2 nunchaku and he's been going nuts with
them from the beginning. However, I am always wondering if
martial arts, a dread spear or Zatoichi Bo would be more effective. I tried each of these with RFS-81 - the only dependable hireling - and find each choice has it's appeal.
But the great thing about the monk is not only his critical potential, but his many knockouts (supplemented by the nunchucks). I wouldn't replace him with any other character.

I agree -- wouldn't replace my monk either. Love not having to worry about equipment. Just robes and sandles, hands and feet. I use psionics for long range attacks. That means a much better carrying capacity for the whole party. And I don't know if I'm unlucky compared to the rest of you, but it seems like I've been getting blinded more often than poisoned. If it wasn't for my monk, I'm sure I'd have been s.o.l. on quite a few encounters.

If you are looking for a good weapon to have early in the game, then my suggestion is to start in Wiz6 and import the Spear of Death from Wiz6 into Wiz7 and then into Wiz8.
The Spear of Death does 9-17 damage in Wiz8 and has effects of poison and critical.
With the Spear of Death you have a great weapon at the beginning of the game.
