"Wizardry Proving Grouds Modding Guide"
Hi everyone

I gathered all my knowledge about modding the original Wizardry scenario into a guide.

This guide, and companion files, will help you create your own Wizardry scenario using the original game engine for the Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord scenario.

It is here: http://www.zimlab.com/wizardry/moddingguide/index.html

Anybody up to the challenge of creating a 40ieth anniversary Wizardry scenario?

NICE!

On what OS does the emulator in your zip package run?

I originally played Wizardry on an Apple II+ as a kid. When I started messing around with it again some years ago, I went with a Mac Plus emulation. Unfortunately, I did not realize at the time that there were only a couple of scenarios ever released for the Mac Plus. I'd love to explore more, but it seems I need to pick a new machine to emulate (I'm on a MacBook Pro running MacOS 10.15.7 at present).

Any suggestions on the best OS to emulate to restart my efforts - one which offers the full suite of original scenarios?

Also, is there any way to bring my characters over from the Mac Plus version to whatever I switch to?

Hi John.

I believe the Virtual II Emulator for Mac by Gerard Putter would work just fine since it states that is can open .dsk image files: https://www.virtualii.com/

As for characters transfer, the way to do it is to use the WizPlus program (which is included in my download) to make your characters the exact same as you had on your other Mac version.

Concerning the full suite, except 8, playable on one O/S, it is called The Ultimate Wizardry Archives, which can be played on a PC and you may find on eBay. UNFORTUNATELY, in that version of the first scenario, Proving Grounds, has an awful bug where your characters lose more than gain characteristics points when leveling up, thus making your characters permanently weak, impossible to attain elite classes, and killing the enjoyment of the game. ALSO, Wiz 1 though 5 in that package is only in 4 colors (3, if you think of black not being a color and white being a color), the Apple II original version is in 16 colors.

So, the best way to play all the scenarios is to play Wizardry 1 through 5 as the original Apple II version running on an Apple II emulator, no bugs, 16 colors. Then you can play Wiz 6, 7, and 8 by acquiring them from GOG at https://www.gog.com/ or Steam at: https://store.steampowered.com/ , for a very friendly low price.

Thanks, Snafaru.

Are the disks in your zip file Apple II disks? I tried opening WizPlus in my Mac Plus emulator (Mini vMac), but it did not recognize the disk.

They are Apple II format diskette images, not Mac disk format, so you run them through an Apple II emulator.

I'm now in the process of realizing just how much I've forgotten how to use an Apple IIe. I can't even remember how to show the disk directory.

Here are a few commands to jog your memory.

catalog - to list the contents of a diskette
load hello - to load the BASIC program called "Hello" in memory
list 10-30 - to list a program's lines 10 through 30
save hello - to save your program changes
run hello - to run the program called "hello"
init hello - to initialize (format) a brand new diskette with the hello program currently loaded in memory
brun binprog - to run binary program called "binprog"
pr#6 - to restart the diskette controller and reload/run the diskette in drive 1. (Think of issuing the command init 6 in Linux to reboot a Linux O/S).

Years ago I made a small footprint "Hello" program with all of the essentials (Small = so I could have as many games/programs as possible on a diskette, plus small = speed), check it out, just boot this diskette image in the emulator:
