"a few questions"
After playing Wizardry 7, i was curious for the other wizardry games, so i started playing Wizardry 1. My friends say that i'm crazy (graphics), but i find it an entertaining game.
A few questions though:
- how come the value of a long sword + 2 in Boltac's trading post is less than that of a long sword + 1? Are there any disadvantages to a long sword + 2?
- I read everywhere that when you beat the monsters in the monster allocation center, you get some kind of ring. I fought them several times but never saw a ring. Every time i get a high ninja, 2 high priests and a 2 lvl 8 mages, and after i defeat them, never a chest, only a little bit of gold.

(by the way, i'm playing the mac emulator version, perhaps it's different than the archives version?)

1. "The UWA Version is different than some"
I don't know about the MAC emulator version, but I know that in the UWA version, some of the items are different - Diadem of malor is now Helm of Malor. Some items that had invokeable powers don't anymore.

Seems like there was other stuff, but I can't recall for sure.

2. "RE: a few questions"
Well, welcome to the club. I am the unofficial welcoming party. Love playing the earlier Wizardries myself.

When you get a chance, try the Bard's Tale Trilogy as well. Or you could also try the early Ultima's or the Might and Magic's.

I have both the UWA and my floppies for the Apple IIc, which is how I got my start. By the way, yes my two Apple IIc's work and so does the first 5 Wizardry's.

4. "RE: a few questions"
My buddy and I were talking about old RPG's that we played and D&D. He was telling me that in Bard's Tale there was a spell that was like a gust of wind that blew you away until you hit something. He was saying that if there was nothing to stop you it could actually blow you or your opponent to the other side of the continent.
Is this Bard's Tale or am I confusing it with a different game? And does this spell really exist in a game?

I am asking the hubby now. He is the master of Bard's Tale.

The only spell that he can think of, is in Bard's Tale 3 and it is called FAR FOE. But it is nothing like you described.

It will move your foes 30 feet. TELEPORT lets you change dimensions, but still nothing like you described.

It may exist, but not in Bard's Tale.

6. "RE: a few questions"
thanks for the welcome,
i'm sure i will try the bard tales one day. But i think it's gonna take me a long while to wrestle through the wizardry series. (My party keeps on getting butchered, just when i think they're strong enough to stay on the 9th level for a while - stupid dragonbreath)

7. "character levels"
Stay away from the lower levels until you are well above 13th level in character stats.

That is inviting death to be sure. Have you switched proffessions yet? Make one of your fighters a samurai, another a lord, and then make your theif a ninja.

At least that way, you will have a party full of spell casters and a major killing machine. Ninjas must be EVIL in Wizardry 1, but they are deadly when they get up in levels.

8. "But what about super-elven?"
About the Ninjas - here's another tidbit I've noticed: the manual calls them "super-human fighting machines" - kind of funny considering they actually *can* be human .

And of course you can have a Lord and a Ninja in the same party (by chaning alignments through treating friendly monsters appropriately), or even Good & Evil characters outright (by dispanding one group in the maze and rescuing them with another):

Can you get that high hp the normal way (without cheating)? What level where your characters on?
(not accusing, just curious )

10. "My characters"
Well, you *could* get that high the normal way, I suppose.... but its time to move on to KOD I say once you've visited Werdna a few dozen times. So yes, the screenshot above is from the Apple II version where the Identify 9/S trick works.

For the archives (PC) though, this trick doesn't work, however, so my characters there are pure from cheats (barring the game quirk of being able to change your alignment and get a good Ninja):

Furthermore every character knows every spell (except for Shamino and Subotai, who don't know abriel) due to a few class swaps - plus they're young, nobody has any RIPs, they can each swim 16+, and have the best items in the game, etc.

I'm obviously proud of them, so thanks for asking, plus you can download them also from my site to see or play with them for yourself.

It's in W5, which changed a bunch of the spells.

3. "RE: a few questions"
Hello,

LS +2 will cause more damage, and there are vaiours theories on it's cheaper cost - one that money is less important later in the game, so the price is therefore somehow lower.

The monster allocation center does hold the Blue Ribbon (one of two essential items in the game), needed to access the 2nd elevator that goes from lvls 4-9 (A-F). The ribbon is PAST the encounter you're refering to (its actually a mini-version of your final combat). After the fight, go straight and enter the door one square to the right. Trebor is there waiting for you...

15. "RE: a few questions"
My theory was always that the +2 was cheaper for the same reason that a lot of the really valuable items in W2 can't be sold to Boltac at all -- it's a hint to the player that it's better to keep it than sell it.
