"Turn based RPG"
Hey All, I'm looking to get something new to play on my machine but I only like turn based games. Can anyone out there tell me what would be good? I loved Wiz 8 and Might and Magic, but didn't care for Pool of Radience or Arcanum. I've heard there are some great new games out there but I need to know if they are turn based (course I wounldn't have to bother you if they just gave you the info on the dang box). Thanks for your input.
Haven't slept yet, why start now?!

I too like the turn-based stuff, but there doesn't seem to be much of a call for it anymore. I don't know of any other turn-based RPGs and this area of the board doesn't get much traffic, so feel free to ask this over on in the Wiz 8 area.

hello WW
it's very old now, but if you can find it you could try
'eye of the beholder'
the series went to 3, gradually weakening, but still playable.
it's flick screen, but after the first level, i was completely absorbed. the puzzle element was superb, just the right degree of difficulty. don't spend much, i don't want you shouting at me if you disagree, gaming is highly personal, you could hate it. i see it occasionally at boot fairs here in the uk, and i might buy it one day for nostalgia!
does anybody remember 'alternate reality, the dungeon' ?

I liked EOB & EOB2 very much, but I don't think they can be regarded as "turn-based".

The fights there are almost real-time (I won't explain here ) and monsters move and hit without waiting for you.

But those games are great! Especially because of puzzling part. Special Quests were extremely fun to find.

Lands of Lore is something similar to EOB.
A nice game too.

I don't think my video card supports vaporware. I'll check.

Looking at the site I swear that he used the same words two or three (four?) years ago. Played the game/found a few bugs to fix/beta will be out shortly.

If you're looking for a Turn Based RPG (also known as "Tactical RPGs, or TRPGs), and you want to pay little or no money, then I suggest these two games:

Styrateg (Shareware, 19.95 for the full game on pc)

OR, MY PERSONAL FAVORITE

The Battle of Wesnoth (Freeware, Free to play)

There's my 2 cents, hope you enjoy.

The games you refer to are strategy board games.

StarTrail (from German developers) is one that came closest to Wizardry, but is very much about micro-management and the battle chess-board system does not draw you in. The array of medicinal herbs was quite interesting though.

The city exploration was ahead of it's time, but once indoors it switched back to the chessboard system.

Dragons Wars is a turn-based based RPG easily available for download. Interesting story, easy gameplay.

Phantasie (I-II-III) is a really nice turn-based old RPG. Not first-person, but birdview. Recommendation: Phantasie III with Atari ST Emulator. Also download manual for copy protection.

Bloodwych is not turn-based, but a special game nonetheless. It can be played by two players on the same screen. Some puzzles even change if there are two players. Can be played alone, of course. Drawback: Small graphic, for only half of the screen is used in single player mode.

Then there are still the old SSI/AD&D games starting with the old "Pool of Radiance". Probably the best turn-based rpg combat system of their time. The series is quite big and available as a package.

But what I'm really waiting for is a new Wizardry VI or VII. Perhaps somebody will use the editor to create a Part VIII for the old engine....dreaming. ;)

There are some really great in-depth roguelike-games out there that are really like a turnbased rpg - just with ASCII graphics.
I'm currently immersed in ADOM (from adom.de), which IMHO is the best roguelike game out there. The developer is currently working on a new one called JADE.

It can be a bit difficult to get into at first because of all the keyboard commands but if you can get past that it really is quite immersive with a unique story line.

Always remember the Tleilaxu Epigram:
Here lies a toppled god
his fall was but a small one
we did but build his pedestal
a narrow and a tall one.

A very good game I have found is Everlong. It can be played turn based or not. Here is the link to the website:

Some of the monsters are really tough, it is free to download.

The above("Everlong") is a JRPG though...just to warn you. JRPGs are not really RPGs but do contain a few aspects of such.

If you do not mind oldschool top down games with graphics from the Ultima 5 era then you should definitely check out Natuk and Pirates of the Western Sea, both from www.proudft.com. Natuk is $15 for the full game but the demo is pretty big(limited to the underground first 3rd of the game). P.O.W.S. is free because it was never completed(but IS finish-able/playable. Both these games(especially P.O.W.S.) feature a detailed turn-based combat system that is unmatched by any other CRPG save for Jagged Alliance 2. You can dual wield, aim for specific locations/body parts, etc.

Also from the same author/site but with Ultima 3-4 era graphics is Nahlakh, the predecessor to Natuk. It features a VERY different system(skills improve by using them rather than via spending XP) but still pretty extensive TB combat. It is free to download the full game but the author does still accept donations/registrations from people who want to do so.

You can also check out the games from Spiderweb Software( www.spidweb.com) which are also turn-based. The "Avernum" games are isometric remakes of his older top-down "Exile" games and feature different systems(improved in some ways and way crappier in others). The "Geneforge" games are 'Science Fantasy' genre.

Another similarly old school RPG which I also did some graphics for was "Helherron"(http://www2.lut.fi/~akuukka/helherron/main.htm) but, while it has tremendous tactical, turn-based combat and a great magic system, the final version(freeware) was full of bugs for the Windows release(the Linux one is not so bad). The bugs do not really prevent you from getting through the game bug they are annoying as Hell to work around.
