"wiz 1 backup file help, please"
Hi--
I've read through this whole board, and have found some good ideas for my fist venture into Wizardry--Ultimate Archives version. ((Hi Willow--remember me from the W&W board??))

I'm hoping that someone can take pity on a computer idiot and give me specific, step-by-step instructions on how to make a backup file. DOS frightens me, and the files from the cd confuse me, so please write directions as simply as possible.

Thanks,
Dragonteller

1. "try this out"
the Ultimate Wizardry Archives installs wizardry 1 into this default directory: C:\WIZARD15\

assuming the files are still in that directory, open that folder up with Windows Explorer or whatever. what you are looking for are these three files: WIZ1.COM, WIZ1.DSK and SAVE1.DSK.

WIZ1.COM is the actual program that you run, WIZ1.DSK is the scenario disk (for lack of a better term) and SAVE1.DSK contains all the information about your heroes and their struggles.

all you really need to do to back up your characters is make a copy of SAVE1.DSK and rename it to something like BACKUP1.DSK. easy enough!

now for restoring: let's say you go to battle WERDNA and he slaps your party around leaving all of them dead. just go back to the C:\WIZARD15\ directory and delete your current SAVE1.DSK (the one with the dead characters) and make a copy of BACKUP1.DSK (the one with the alive characters) and rename it to SAVE1.DSK. your old characters are restored!

hope this helps, and good luck with your adventuring!

Willow

Thanks, Willow!
I have some favorite characters already, and I was afraid to go beyond Murphy's Ghost with them. I'm gonna do as you suggest as soon as I'm finished with this thank-you note.

You are my new rpg hero, and thanks for the quick response. I think I'll name a mage after you : )

Hey--it didn't work!
When I restored the game per your instructions, all of my characters were gone, and the roster only showed the stock characters that the game game with (Tibos, Mewe, etc). There was only one SaveDSK file in the Explorer folder, so I am baffled as to why I made a mistake.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
DT

Willow,
It worked this time, as long as I remember to play through Windows instead of DOS. Thanks so much.
