"Influential games"
Just a random spiel....

I personally think that the upcoming neverwinter nights has the potential to be one of the most influential games up to date.
Obviously the FPS are on a pedestal of sorts and probably wont be knocked down but when you look at how popular diablo is/was (whatever), then think that nn deigns to combine that best elements of that kind of thing with the better elements of a consistent multi player game world like uo, and you will have what could and probably should be a vaguely groundbreaking game.
To put the creativity in the hands of the players completely deliberately (as opposed to things like ultima offline experiment and so forth) is something that has mainly been tried by vampire but i dunno, the engine for that was, i think, very FPS like and not conducive to player interaction that it was doomed to start with in any case.
but since this has been tried and tested both in a single player and small multi player format it shouldnt have too much problems in those areas. with the ability to easily put in extra monsters etc and presumably the ability to create ones own monsters, items and so forth the potential is really huge

I guess what remains to be seen is if people will find the time and inclination to actually create their own bg like adventures and get ontheline with enough friends at one time to do things with them. This is make or break

As it stands the possibility of having localised multiplayer games is so much better than having to go through central servers (well i sure think so) when it comes to reducing lag etc
and generally therell be good reasons why youre playing with your own small group - they're unlikely to kill you or stuff up the whole thing in some fashion

Well ill stop this before it loses what little structure it still has
comments, rebuttals, half french sticks for 50 cents?

i think the tools to MAKE dungeons and maps in NWN will have to be easy and quick to use for it to be popular. .. Vampire was a good game but the controls for an online gm were very . . . unfriendly (although i didn't have the patience). NWN hopeully will strive to make PRE-game setup to be very easy. . . in that i mean they should have options for random dungeons, or tiled dungeon sets which are easy to make. . .sorta like an interface in Rollercoaster Tycoon except making a 3d dungeon!

that way, ppl can make as simple a dungeon or as complex a dungeon as they want. . .

my fear is NWN might turn out to be souped up 3d version of diablo with a less-than-friendly customzable options. . . but of what i read they are striving to make ease-pf-use for the online and offline gm tools. . . thats the key to the game imo

etc
