"Some beginner problems"
LAST EDITED ON Sep-21-08 AT 01:17 PM (Pacific)

I recently got Wiz 8 and now I imported my party from Wiz 7.
Dwarf Lord
Lizard Fighter
Fellpur Samurai
Human Ninja
Elf Bard
Elf Valkyrie

Well, I know, not the optimal party, but I don't care ;) I got through Wiz 6 and 7 well. However, there are some problems now:
As you see, no pure caster and what's most important no pure priest. The Valkyrie started as a priest in Wiz6, I basically changed her to Valkyrie because of the better armor.

During the initial level ups in Wiz8 I chose 3 priest and 1 Valkyrie levels to give her some more magic abilities for the start and then turn her back to Valkyrie. This turned out to be a bad idea: There are lots of poisoning and dieseasing creatures in the upper monastery and I don't have spells to cure it. And the enemys on the Arnika road are extremely tough too. I don't get anywhere!

I have another issue with my Ninja: In Wiz6 and 7 he was in the back row, but could still attack enemys when he was hidden. Now in Wiz8 this was changed. He can't fight from the center and the front row is full. I put him to the right in the formation, so he was able to attack sometimes in close combat, but his attacks were not very strong. At level 7 I decided to make him a ranger. But the problem is, he is not good at bows, and well...I have to wait ages for more spells.

I think I'll start over: This time I turn the Ninja a ranger right away and I turn the Valkyrie back to priest (I'd like to turn her back to a Valkyrie later in the game. Which level would be good for that?) Do you think it will be easier this way?

Oh and another question: What does the Ranged Critical-trait of the ranger do exactly? As far as I understood it, Critical strike only works in close combat. A Ninja has the Thrown critical trait, so he can make critical hits with thrown weapons. But the ranger can't train the Critical Strike skill. Can someone explain this to me?

Class changing isn't what it used to be, you'll do better without it (at least for now). Bishops rule in this game. Make your Valkyrie a Bishop (You could try to do it in W7, I think it would make the starting stats better). Together with the Bard they can take care of the magic. When to turn her into a valkyrie? That would be so late in the game, after she has learned all needed Bishop spells, that you may leave her be. Learn disabling spells. Sleep, Web, Paralyze, Blinding Flash and Insanity are great low level spells.

Ranger can have critical hits with ranged weapons and ranged combat skill controls his criticals. You don't see skill numbers but trust me, he will get quite good as he gets more levels. He will also find all hidden items! I just recently noted with my second party (with a Ranger) through Dodd's mod, that I had neglected to cast Detect Secrets at some places...

If you have many strong characters, you can leave the front row empty. Put three characters in the middle and two to the sides, and you have five characters able to use short range weapons.

While in the Monastery, don't take all level-ups. I exit the building at level 6. It can make monsters a bit easier. You can then level up on the road.

This is a transfer team, so you get 5 levelups free when you arrive OR before you start the game. Examine your transfer team and see who transferred the most skill points in Divinity, Alchemy etc and transform THAT person to Bishop. The person with the best alchemy skill should switch to alchemist or bishop. get them to 15 points of alchemy as soon as possible, then switch to bishop or some other pure caster.

Anyone with alchemy spellcasting can improve their alchemy skill by merging potions (lt heal+med heal=heavy heal). IF they are level 5 or higher and ninja or ranger, they can improve their skill. As you have seen, your valkyrie was locked out of skill-building until she had 5 levels AS A Valkyrie.

SO ... highest alchemy to alchemist/bishop, get 15 alchemy, switch back to original profession. Save your mixable potions, there are about 6 useful combinations dependent on your alchemy level. When your character can learn spells, sit down in a quiet place and mix potions ONE BY ONE and make tons of money and boost their alchemy skill.

Read the old posts - we have lots of rants on the "best" way to transfer !!

If you have Wiz 7, try loading that and rearrange the stuff they wear/carry. The stuff that transferrs has VERY specific rules. Again, search the board for previous opinionated discussions.
