"Ranger sucks? - not to me !!!"
Ranger sucks sounds familiar to you?
Not to me! My current Party has the classic meat shield 2 Liz-Fighter und 1 Liz-Rogue. Behind the meat shield my Bishop (Gnome)makes himself comfortable in the middle while he is guarded by 2 Mook Rangers. In the beginning of the game you get a lot of extra protection for your bishop and a lot of ranged power from your bow experts (especially the critical ones ). Specializing one in Scouting and the other in Mythology since you reach 5th level give some support for nice gameplay. After 5th level you pump up magic for later support. Same to Sword as basic stats for the giant swords later in the game.

All together the best party i ever had! Nice gameplay all over the time.

Hi,

I like the ranger too, one of my favorite classes. (I can't get Samurai to work out well, they peak too late for me). The one time I tried a Mook I never seemed to get instant kills much, and weight issues were a problem. This time around I'm having better success with a Human who is somewhat strong and vital.

Only one true spell caster in your party? Is that safe?

Hi Carcophan,

the bishop is always safe! If heīs the only true spell caster he rocks like no one else. "Experience is the best teacher ..."
Weight problems are solved by maxing Strength (and Sense of course) in the beginning. That helps also with extra damage and stamina for the giant swords later. After that turn to Vitality for extra stamina and balanced stats of Dexterity and Speed.

3. "How many casters do you need?"
To be honest, you don't need any casters, or even quasi-casters (bards/gadgies) to make a successful party. one of the great things about the replayability of this game is that you can win it with almost any party, with any number of characters. 6 lizzie fighters are pretty unstoppable, although they have some diffculty staying sane in Bayjin and with the Soulseeker, and plenty of people have had solo non-casters like rogues or fighters win the game.

Sure, you can play with nearly every kind of party. But besides freaks playing everything whatīs possible, the fun part in gameplay is the thing you are looking for. Your example with 6 liz fighters is a very good one. Gigantic destroying power, but annoying in gameplay (your examples Bayjin, ...; there is more...). I played myself with several partys of 4 which is fun too, but playing with solo characters you have to use a lot of workarounds (itīs possible, but who cares except the named ones) and ...
I guess you know what i mean.

It's actually quite a bit fun and challenge with a lone thief... if I only had my pack rat urges under control...

*continues playing with +6 AC penalty*

Rangers are pretty cool. I've once ascended with an ranged party: three rangers, Ninja, Gadgeteer and Bishop (and Vi, who concentrated on rifles). They've had a pretty easy time and were fun to play! Later in the game, most monsters were down, before they even had a chance of coming close.
Fortunately, Rangers (and Gadgies) can use some of the best close combat weapons in the game: Fang, Giant Swords etc. and can wear decent armour.
The worst problem was with weight: Ammo (arrows and esp. rocks) are quite heavy, so I set a portal in Arnika where I stored all the ammo. If someone was running low, I just portaled in, grabbed some and portaled out.
