"speed"
I've noticed that sometimes the board loads/runs quickly. This is good. Other times it crawls along. That is not good.

Is there something I'm doing/not doing? Or is this just the way life is? I of course have the forum on my favorites list and head straight here via my 56k modem/explorer 5.0.

1. "RE: speed"
I'd guess it has a lot to do with net congestion, etc. -- and maybe even a little bit with the number of people currently using the board. Just a fact of life if you're still using a modem, I'm afraid.

OE, who has only 3 months before he dumps his modem and goes T1.

2. "This was an issue I raised a long time ago"
Back when I firs started this board (knowing nothing about it), one of my main concerns was access time (i.e. speed). Luckily, everyones expectations were fairly low (having lived with the VN boards for so long ).

I posted a message here (in the About the Board section) asking people to rate the speed. The voting came out to be about an 8 (1 being bad, 109 being great).

And the only things that should be affecting speed are:
1. Your ISP - if they are busy, you may get slowed down.
2. My ISP - if the site that host my web pages are busy, then response could slow down.
3. The Internet in general - if it's slow (like a new Victoria Secret catalog is released, or the Monica Lewinsky transcripts), then everybody suffers.

I imagine any slowdowns are more likely attributed to #1 and #2 - I have a T1 at work and sometimes accessing the forum takes a while. But when that happens, it ususally is our T1 being slow, because all the pages I access seem to go slow. Or it could be my machine being bogged down (running clucnky old DOS applications ).

While living in a third-world country (i.e. Germany)}) I'd like to know what *T1* is.
BTW, my sarcasm isn't really far-fetched - these days (literally) we are proud to live to see the FIRST flat rates being between 35 and 50 $ here in Germany.
