"What monsters do you hate the most?"
The monsters I hate the most are any kind of Sprites - from the early part of the game, to near the end of the game, they are a pain in the ass. When ever they show up - my party says here we go again as they pass out the resurection powder.

Any type of weeds. They're not hard to beat, but just annoying to fight. I run away from them whenever I can.

Gives a new meaning to the word "vegetarian".

yes, definitely the weeds. Too many hp to take them out fast, but not worth enough experience to want to fight them, and they are EVERYWHERE (especially in trynton)!

Aside from those, I think my next least favorite are any kind of flying snake...for roughly the same reasons.

All of the unicorn variety and especially the Soul Eater ... my party never seems to have what it takes to resist these attacks.

Try soul shield spell at high level. I got a bard in my party, the Umpani Saxx, and he always comes in handy with his soulful sax. And I never had any problems with any unicorn variety I run into, only they're annoying because they keep running away from me.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-20-03 AT 08:59 AM (Pacific)

I agree with Souleater and chasing unicorns being the toughtest. I have yet to get the Soulful Sax yet though. I've tried the Swap/drop that some have suggested but can get him to turn it loose. I've even let him get killed but there is nothing to recover. Any suggestions. I'm bored (and broke) from trying other stuff so I'm going back in with a Bishop, Bard, Fighter and Ranger 4 person team.

Try pickpocket. If your skill is high enough you can get the sax from Saxx.

If anyone ever builds a monster editor, they should find the "distance to go from Neutral to Hostile" setting and let us set it to zero. Sometimes I just like to watch the monsters walk past and admire the artwork.

I hate Juggernauts. They are hard to kill, have lots of hp and for how difficult they are give really low xp.

The only easy way I've found to defeat them is by using death bombs - but until you get the spell those are few.

And I didn't found such "distance".
I think that this distance may depend on MAX attack range as well as on some Walk Speed (how fast creature can approach to make a melee attack). But I don't remember of finding this Walk Speed too.

I agree with unicorns, they are really ahrd to beat, but when uve succesfully casted an silence spell on them they are quite easy since they cant do anything but run

But the rapax patrols are some of the kind of enemy i hate to figth: too much HP, too much damage for too less experience...

I think I hated the bug variety the most. The way my party was built, I focused mostly on protective spells and very little offensive spell capability. The bugs come in huge swarms (I've met 37 in one battle once), always surround you, have incredible movement, some with range attacks, and come with a huge variety of status ailments like poison, paralysis, blind, ko, spell drain, etc. I often wished I had a good nuclear blast to clean them out, but my fighters have to pick them off one by one. Oh yeah, sprites who have more hitpoints than half my characters....I have a major problem with those too.

Probably Sprites too..mostly Wind or Sea Sprites though, the Tree and Leaf Sprites aren't too bad for me. And I hate Frightmares and any kind of Swallower. They aren't very tough, but the fact that they can swallow a party member just irks me. Ugly too. And Rapax.

I havan't gotten too far yet..I was just stupid enough at one point to wander out into the SE wilderness and 'lucky' enough to be attacked by a Rapax Patrol near Trynton. ((What was a Rapax Patrol doing near Trynton? I mean..it *IS* called Trynton for a reason.))

I can't believe nobody mentioned those centipedes, millipedes, and thanopedes in the swamp and Marten's Bluff. They're not hard or cheap or anything like that, I like challenges. It's those multiple spitting attacks that slow the game down. I ran into three parties with about fourty bugs, seemed like five minutes before I even had a chance to start my first round of combat. Jeeze! I felt like cogging out and reloading so I could run the other way. One time I went to go tee-tee and came back expecting to find it time for me to start round one. Guess what? I did a Rubble. (Perfect. Oh no. Oh sh--!)

On my first game I thought the seekers were pretty bad. I kept saying to my self, "Self, if only they could have sped up that spitting sequence." to which Self would reply, "Yeah, I. Me hope that's as boring as it gets."

Little did I know.

The monsters I hate most- early on- I have to add that, is the Juggernauts as someone else mentioned. Every time I leave Arnika and head for Trynton the first time, they're just everywhere.. Much too many hp's for my low lvl spells, like fireball or freeze flesh. Once I start hacking on them, they wake up again after 1 round and its time for me to run like h..
And if you spend too long time in the monastery, you might end up running into those metallic slimes.....ack !
No point in running up to them, have to take them out from a distance. 10 minutes fihgts everytime.
At AP, I find the fights with the Crag Sprites most annoying.

With my current party (3x Ranger, Ninja, Gadgeteer, Bishop & Vi) I just hate creatures with high stealth and ranged attacks. Half of the attacks miss, even with eagle eye and maxed ranged combat & bow. What a waste of ammo.

Oh, and obviously the rapax & sprites who cast missile shield are annoying, too! Fortunately the magic users are quite competent, as are the party's close combat abilities.

The ones' that run away, I get this in the swamp area where it's hard to see. My best conter attack is an elemental that will chase them down, and hit them with poisin arrows % darts so that get more hits per turn even though they run away.

Ah... I would have to say the manta rays... those and squids... I took out Nessie with ease, walked a few steps, got ambushed by a brother ray... Bam. Death cloud. Entire party dead, first turn. Ah well... Amazing how easy Nessie is at level 16-18... i heard people said she was hard. :-/

The PSI Sharks drive me nuts! My party was dealing with so many of them on the way to the Sea Caves. Using soul sheild helps, but my party was exhausted with close range combat, whick gets the higher point hits. Everytime one battle was won, and just started to move on, 8 more PSI Shark showed up, sometimes along with dwellers.

Its been a long time since I have played the game so I dont remember exactly what they are called but the large scorpian type thing that shoot critical kills (why cant I remember them?). They hang out mostly in martens bluff. No matter how high level my party was or if missile shield was on, there were always thorns that got through and killed one or two of my party every single time.

wow...i agree with almost everyone on what monsters are really annoying...

my vote for the worst though is a tie between the rapax (getting into a fight with 35 of them, only like 3 visible at a time, and they all take about 10 minutes to make their moves which almost never impact the battle...no fun) and the big guys like golems that are easy to scare or blind...and thus are prone to running.

just try to imagine spending almost 20 mins chasing a 350 hp monster through the paths on AP, who won't stand his ground cuz he's blind, and he started off far enough way that only a few guys can hit him with (weaker) ranged attacks...literally just picking him off a little at a time...

Problem is some of the better ranged projectiles are with added effects. Not to mention a Gadgeteer rifle causing some of these lesser useful effects. So most often it's just by chance, but then again what isn't?

I agree, my Gadgeteer will blind a monster at the worst time, and I have to chase it down. I only use blinding when my party is in big big trouble. I had a large group of cave dwellers that my party was about to die, and was out of spells, etc,,. blinding is one item that I'm sure would work under water! It gave my party time to heal and regroup.

I hate, more than anything, the Fire creatures. I can't see. I have to turn the screen so my eyes don't hurt from the fire on my screen. And they always come right up to you, so you can't see who's behind them. Admittedly, they die easily enough, but it's rather painful to have in my viewscreen. I feel like the RFS-81 when blinded. "View screen off!"

The Psi Sharks suck, but the toughest battle I've ever fought was the arcane temple in the SE Wilderness. Death Lords, 6 sorceresses that summon elementals, the sorceress queen (two words: Cerebral Hemorrhage)... and all that as a solo Ninja character. Took me a really long time to clear it out.

34. "RE: What monsters do you hate the most?"
For a solo ninja ... Bring two NPC's with you, then release them in the doorway before starting battle. Tantris does pretty good here. DO NOT let them out of line-of-sight or they will teleport back home. Start combat, move into the doorway. Round two, throw a Death Bomb. Round three, throw a canned elemental. Round four-to-whatever, stand in the doorway and fight. Use EyeForAnEye and Purify Air. The dismissed NPC's will charge down the hall and fight until they die. The SQ, DL's and cultists will get strung out and distracted. Hopefully the Death Bomb will pick them off.

If you feel merciful, run out of the temple and down the road. The NPC's will teleport home and be safe. After combat ends (I hope some/most of the cultists are dead) sneak back and attack your strung-out opponents one by one. Don't waste a lot of time or they will heal from the 1st fights damage. Use another Death Bomb/elemental if there are cultists left in the temple.

This trick will also work with SQ's big sister Nebdar. I doubt that Death Bombs will work on her friends however. Her necklace helps a ninja recharge spell power so you should do the fight.

35. "Opinions on strange tactics"
It is amazing the number and variety of tactics people came up with for this battle (and others). If you compare this to the gorrors in Wiz 7, which is more satisfying to win? Does having all these tricks, like standing around corners, release NPCS, etc. detract from the intent of the game ... or were these tricks an intentional part of the game?

With the gorrors (and all wiz 7 batttles), once you made a high enough level, the battle was moot.

36. "RE: Opinions on strange tactics"
After writing applications for users for 29 years this September, I can say with total confidence that you NEVER know how the users will use your program. They don't read the documentation, they don't see the error messages, they don't report the error messages when they do see them, they read the last line of the error message (click here to continue) and don't see the rest. If "P" for passing isn't allowed at our school, they create an outside district school with OUR schools name, then give them "P".

Wizardry 8's greatest strength is our ability to misuse it and still get useful results out of it. The teleport-when-out-of-sight thing is an example. If you dump Myles in Arnika he will wander around and help in a battle. He only teleports "if not in-Arnika and released and not visible-to-party".

Hmm. I have never tried releasing him then walking away, then stopping to see if he starts patrolling while still in sight. Mt Gigas Valley is flat, I'll try it there. Or outside the monastery.

If I could modify the code, I would add "and not in-battle" and I would make them all walk home.

37. "OK, one step further ...."
(And we are the perfect two people to go point-counterpoint on this

If you are using the game outside of the design, doesn't that invalidate the game. For instance, you know of a bug and exploit it to beat the game or to overcome obstacles that are intended to be met only after certain criteria ... say instead of the "fighter bug" in Wiz 7 being that they receive double damage, they deal double damage. So you create a party of all fighters to beat otherwise (intentionally) unbeatable situations, like defeating the Gorrors at level 10, instead of 20.

Of course, this whole topic has been argued before and tends to come down to personal belief in what is right wrong and allowed in ones own gaming experience.

38. "ITS AN UNDOCUMENTED TESTING FEATURE !!!"
and the Mystery Menus would ruin the game for a beginner. But again, Wiz Gold was solidly designed, so when this undocumented testing feature was discovered and exploited, it was not (usually on all installations) fatal.

It did create some odd stuff sometimes, and selling a ninja garb (u) for 235000 gold pieces did solve your money problems, and collecting 3 free spear+2's outside Thesminster Abbey and a light sword from the one-shot menus did create an unfair advantage for a beginning team.

For the veteran, it was fun to hunt for the stuff. Like the Bag Of &^% that cast a level 32 Poison Gas. The only way I ever killed Thief Of 9 Worlds.

As for the fighter bug, I didn't hear it spelled out until years later, but I knew there was something wrong because they got so damaged so often. I never used one in a party after the first few games. Even so, the game is winnable without using a classic character.

And even if you do consider it cheating.. you're only cheating yourself. Its not like an online game where it could impact large numbers of people.

And after being a long time veteran of Wizardy, I must say I had a LOT of fun using those mystery menus in Wiz7!
