"gnome or faerie bishop"
I am currently playing Wizardry Gold and plan to import my party. I also plan to change one or two of the characters from the import party and start new level ones (I want a gadgeteer!).

My question regards my bishop. I currently have a gnome bishop, and I have seen that faeries make the best bishops. Is it worth it for me to switch to a level one character to change the race?

As I see it...

Gnome pros:
- Start level 5
- Will start with 20 skill points in spell areas
- Will get 9-10 extra attribute points
- Can wear/wield some arms and armors faeries cannot
- Especially true for some mana recharging cloaks and such

Faerie pros:
- Regenerate mana faster than other races
- Better starting speed
- More resistances

Related question: is it better to start at the Monastery or at Umpani base?

Thanks for the help!

1. "Got a little Patience?"
I'd make a Faerie, then play in W-7 a while longer, even doing some class-rotations to build up the skills.
You will NOT start W-8 with 20's in casting skills--this is the exception. You'll get 16's (IIRC) in the Schools and 13 or 20 in the Realms you have spells in (one spell 13; two, 20). (you only import 4 or 6 as a Bishop, i think...)
And a little hint: If you've never played W-8, enter the game at Level 1 so the first spawns are a bit easier; take your 4 levels right away once the game starts.

2. "Forgot your other question:"
First time in W-8, i'd start on the beach (take the girl ending or no ending at all in W-7)
It's fun to start at the Umps once you know where everything is in the game, otherwise it's a lot harder.

4. "RE: Got a little Patience?"
Thanks for the reply, but one more point of clarification please!

I have heard about several mana regenerating items that faeries cannot wear. Considering this are the faeries still worth it?

Thanks again.

5. "Mana (Spell Point) regeneration"
i think there's only one such thing in the original game (which Bishops can wear, but not Faeries), and there are only a couple items that regen SP's when worn; Faeries can wear the most important one, which also gives + to Powercast. If you import a Mana Stone (or two, but don't waste items slots that could be Spellbooks--there're 2 ore 3 that will import for spells your character forgets) and keep getting it recharged before using the last charge, you should be set.

3. "Umpani or Monastery or T'rang"
If you leave Guardia with the T'rang, you will be dropped outside Martens Bluff. Sadok has some really nice stuff, and Marten left some really nice stuff in his secret hideaway. If you are careful and Know The Secret, you can explore virtually all of Martens Bluff before you go anywhere else.
