"Wizardry 8 and Linux"
I'm on the verge of upgrading my K6 200, and even though the new hardware will finally be able to cope with the steep hardware requirements of Wizardry 8, I wanted to ask if you have experience with running Wizardry 8 under Linux. Or FreeBSD, I'm open for suggestions.

Check out the 'Misc Info' section of the web site in my signature below for a link to a page with instructions for running Wiz8 under Linux using WINE.

Visit http://wiz8.web1000.com/ for a spreadsheet that allows you to enter in your spellcasters stats, and it will tell you what spells the character can learn, or for spells that they are not yet able to learn, it will tell you how many points they need, or why your character can't learn the spell.

Great, just what I've been looking for, thank you. In Cedega's (formerly winex) supported games database Wizardry 8 is listed with 4 of 5 stars, indicating slight troubles with the game. Did you notice any shortcomings yourself, or did the game run seamlessly?

It would be funny if proper wine would support some games better than Cedega...

Sooo, tried installing this weekend and here's some feeback to your installation guide.

First of all, http://wiz8.web1000.com/ is (was) redirected to a p o r n site. I guess noone ever clicks on your signature, or you got hacked, or you need money desparately. Your second link is all good, clean and nice so far, though.

Installing Wizardry 8 via wine works fine. As http://www.wizardry8.com is no more (no big news to you guys, I guess), getting a patch was a bit more of a hassle.
As for the nocd patch for v1.2.4 as an .exe file, it is compressed as an .ace format on gamecopyworld, which refuses to extract using the newest version of unace available for Debian Sid. The patches where you have to run a crack.com doesn't work for me using wine - it doesn't recognize it's in the same directory as the Wiz8.exe.

I could get a nocd patch .exe for v1.0 though. I've already patched my installed version to v1.2.4, so I guess it's time for reinstalling and playing the "rushed out" (haha) buggy version, cursing the guys at Sirtech for issuing a faulty product, for making the game dependent on a mounted game CD and for copy-protecting the CDs. In a couple of years (or sooner), I can throw my Wizardry 8 CD set into the trash, because the CDs will have become faulty (this time not on the software, but on the hardware side). The game developers probably didn't want anyone to be able to play the game anymore.

Oh yeah, but I can get a replacement CD from Sirtech, anytime.

Sigh.

Thanks for your guide, though, I'll see if I can get v1.0 running for now.

Thanks to a kind soul who extracted the nocd patch for me, the game runs now flawlessly, smoother than I had ever seen it before. Sound wouldn't work at first, but after some tweaking of the wine config file everything is perfect - so far.
Here are the changes I made to the wine config file, just in case someone encounters similar problems.

"Drivers" = "wineoss.drv" ; (eventhough alsa is my sound driver)

"HELmargin" = "5"
"HELqueue" = "5"
"SndQueueMax" = "28"
"SndQueueMin" = "12"
"HardwareAcceleration" = "Emulation"

As 3DSetup.exe wouldn't want to run with wine (some mfc42.dll missing/not recognized), I created my own 3DVideo.CFG file with the following entries:

OpenGL
1024
768
16
Miles Fast 2D Positional Audio

The above settings are dependent on what settings your x server is running of course.

So, now let's see if I can get my expert level lone dwarven thief from Wizardry 7 (Level 350 or so) to proceed to Wizardry 8.

6. "travel diary"
Wheee, that was some fun.

Found an old savegame with said dwarven hero in the upper monastery, being trapped by some 20 rabid and gnawer rats. Not being a powerful mega-man anymore, he deployed (after several dozen failing trials to defeat the critters) a wonderful new strategy, the hit and run maneuver. Or actually, make that the mostly only run maneuver. Finished the monastery and ventured onto Arnika road, evading some invincible Crusher Crabs. Looted the bandit hideout, then sneaked around some corners, outran some brigands and crimson poppies, defeated some wasps and made it into Arnika finally. Phew.

Now at L9, my little thief is still quite feeble. Stealth, which is at 81 or so, doesn't seem to do anything much except lowering the AC a bit, all other attributes except lockpicking are way below 50. As he brought with him some Wizardry 7 heritage, my character has to adhere to the following rules: playing and staying in expert mode, no class-changing, no resting (sleeping), not using any information that wasn't obtained in the game so far, no reloading at treasure chests (which might be pointless in Wizardry 8 anyway, I think). Plus, staying alone as far as possible, not sure if that is feasible in Wizardry 8.

So far, this is way harder than it was in Wizardry 7, as the monsters level up with my character, so there are no easy fights except the ones with preset monsters. Also, with the cap at level 50, there'll be no collecting of super resistances and no defeating of the Beasts 'o 1000 Eyes with bare hands (well ok, using the Coil of Serpents actually). We'll see.

Only one spoiler to avoid you being driven crazy by a game death. If you absolutely MUST stay alone KILL CROC before you fetch Marten's Idol. Without an RPC or another party member you will DIE every time you fetch the idol. The same thing will happen if you are swallowed (BURP )

8. "Wine update"
Or rather, don't update. After a recent dist-upgrade of Debian unstable, Wizardry 8 wouldn't start anymore, failing with a "Can't find video device, run 3DSetup" error. I reverted to libwine_0.0.20050310-1.1_i386.deb and wine_0.0.20050310-1.1_i386.deb from the testing branch, which are running smooth again. The non-working version was libwine_0.0.20050419-1_i386.deb.
