"New version of the Wiz8SpellAbility spreadsheet released! (v2.01)"
Latest version of the Wiz8SpellAbility spreadsheet has been released! Version 2.01 is now available for download.

Go to http://wiz8.web1000.com for all the details.

For those of you who unfortunately get re-directed to a Web1000 screen (seems to mainly effect people in Eastern Europe), use http://www.metaspinner.net/cgi-bin/nph-spinnerproxy.cgi/110110A/http/wiz8.web1000.com/ instead, which bypasses the problem.

If you're not familar with the Wiz8SpellAbility spreadsheet, here's a brief introduction for you. Basically, it is made up of two types of spreadsheets.

The first enables you to enter in your characters name, profession(s) and how many character levels in each profession, this along with how many skill points in each of the appliable Spell Mastery and Realm skills, and the spreadsheet will calculate for you what spells the character can learn, or how many skill points are required before a spell can be learnt, or why in fact the character cannot learn the spell. You fill in one spreadsheet per character in your party.

The second links the information from all the character spreadsheets into three informatative tabs. These are:

Useful for when visiting merchants or finding spellbooks, tells you which character is able to learn what spells.

Handy for when in an encounter with a band of monsters, this tab tells you which spellcaster is able to cast what spells (so when looking for who can cast the Insanity spell for example, this is the place to look).

Provides a listing of which character will be able to learn a spell in the future, great for determining when you find a spellbook, if it's worth keeping or selling.

Here's what people have had to say about the Wiz8SpellAbility spreadsheet in the past:

"I was playing with your spreadsheet a little more and I am TRULY impressed with what you have done!

"I never expected a spreadsheet with so much detail! I was just expecting something like the data entry tab and having to click a button to refresh the spreadsheet whenever a change was made.

"The other tabs are very nice touches. You obviously put a lot of thought and work into this. I especially like the availabilty tab and how you use strike thru, italic, and bold lettering on the spell names and how you tell how many more levels are needed in the each school of magic to learn a spell. I really like the spell realm and spell availability tables on the data sheet tab. The print out tab is extremely useful for viewing all current and potential spells available in an instant. I just can't say enough about how much I like what you've done."

> blitz100 - VN Boards

"Thanks for info, it was nice tool and now it is even better"

> Danicek - RPGDot

"Thanks. That spreadsheet is a great tool."

> DraconisRex - Ironworks

Seems the web service provider which hosts this web site is having a few glitches (again!).

Visitors, including myself, to the web site (using either of the links above) are being diverted. Even normal ICMP pings fail at times. There are no bandwidth limits / throttles policies with this site. All access stats/logs have vanished too.

I am currently in the process of making enquires, and will let you know once the outcome is known. In the meanwhile, keep trying every now-and-again.

Hi Wolfie

Thanks for the help you have sent to the boards over the years. I can't download the spreadsheet because I haven't got excel - any way around this please?

Aggie

Thanks aggie, Llevram is right, there is a version which has been made more friendly to other spreadsheet applications (providing they can at least read Excel files). Has all the same features, just not a visually pretty (you have to hand-edit values instead of having clickable spinners and drop-down boxes, that sort of thing).

Also, if you do not have any sort of spreadsheet application, check out OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org) which is a free to download and use for private purposes. The non-Excel version of the Wiz8SpellAbility spreadsheet was extensively tested on it's predecesor StarOffice.

To get information on this version, go to http://wiz8.web1000.com/#Wiz8SpellAbility and scroll down to the paragraphs titled "Attention Non-Excel Owners" and follow the links from there.

Hope this helps.

I have been informed, that the proxying service being provided previously by metaspinner has been canned.

This link - http://proxy.drkangel.com/nph-index.cgi/000110A/http/wiz8.web1000.com/ can be used if the main URL doesn't work for you.

Seems the proxy software had been upgraded, which as resulted in a change to the URL. http://proxy.drkangel.com/nph-index.pl/000110A/http/wiz8.web1000.com/ should now work (for now at least, arrgh!)

Hi Wolfie,

Seems like your providers are screwing things up again. Last 2 links you offered aren't working - original site does come up but all links from here go to paysforsurveys.com. Anything you want to share with us?!

There's some info on VNBoards in

http://vnboards.ign.com/message.asp?topic=65092602

A couple of different links, and ways not to encounter those problems. Not all of those links work, but at least uni-heidelberg did for me..... If you don't mind that "questions or suggestions" comes to you as "queschdions or suggeschdions" *g*

10. "RE: Changed URL"
Seems Wolfie just didn't know the correct URL. After looking through the address I saw the error...two URL's thrown together.

Here is the address to the site:

http://wiz8.web1000.com/

Blessed be~

11. "Surprise"
Lady Adrexia, that address is well known. But alas, the service provider (paysforsurveys.com) who hosts this site blocks access to this address from countries Wolfie calls "eastern european" (and that includes Japan as well as Germany )

The two URL's thrown together are proxies (or whatever) which read the page (hopefully without redirection to paysforsurveys.com), analyse it in some way, and then present the altered page (like adding some ads to it/translating it).

12. "RE: Surprise"
Lady_Adrexia, I should know the URL to my own web site <grin>

What Ferro is sadly correct, the web service provider who host my web site have some feather-brained policy about which countries can and cannot access their hosts. Sadly, I only found out about this after I'd signed up, when I started recieving complaints from ppl who were getting diverted. I say "Eastern Europe" and Japan, basically, because there is where the majority of the ppl who have written to me were from.

The proxy URLs work for ppl in the "restricted" countries, because the source address / browser identifiers appear from somewhere else to where the person is actually located. The downside is, these proxy sites appear to be VERY transient (hence why "they don't work" a few weeks after I post them up).

Unfortunately, I'm stuck, I don't own the "wiz8.web1000.com" domain name, so can't just move to another service provider and re-direct the URL. Besides, how could I determine if a replacement service provider doesn't have similar problems.

Personally, I want to help all Wiz8 players gain the most out of the game, and wish that my contribution to "net space" was accessible by everyone.

-----
Visit http://wiz8.web1000.com/ to download a spreadsheet that allows you to enter in your spellcasters current stats, and the spreadsheet will tell you what spells the character can learn, or for spells that they are not yet able to learn, it will tell you how many points you need, or why your character can't learn the spell.

13. "So get a domain name"
...like me ... though "software specialties" doesn't lead one to think of Wizardry.

My host (Icestorm.com) is reliable and doesn't block, as they support businesses ... and they are reasonable (I think 8.95 a month for the basic account, with 5 gig of traffic).

Very true, I personally only came across this board because someone had pasted a link to a topic in another board.

For what it's worth, I could add a link to this board in the Links section of my site.

Might just have to evaluate making the move, not really keen to do so, have had to move once before and lost quite a few visitors in the process.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-14-04 AT 01:49 PM (Pacific)

My webhosting company also does not block anyone. At least no one from Eastern Europe has told me that they are blocked. I have never heard of companies that block...but I guess you get what you pay for and since you don't own the site...they can do as they please.

Here is my web hosting companies info page:

http://drak.net/services/

Basic Jaz package is 200 megs of space, plus 100 megs of MySQL space and 30 gigs of traffic for 10 bucks a month. You have to pay for your domain name...but it is only 15 dollars.

17. "EUROPEAN MIRROR NOW AVAILABLE"
I am pleased to announce there is now an European mirror of Wolfie's Wizardry 8 Info Site!!

So for anyone who's been thwarted by my current web service provider's (Web1000) policy of redirecting visitors to either a 'Pay for Surveys' site or their login page; now you can visit the european mirror to get the amazingly popular Wiz8SpellAbility spreadsheet (nearing 20,000 downloads since release) and all the other Wiz8 related info (like how spell learning works for profession-changed characters, and the retro dungeons to mention just two).

Browse to http://wolfie.wiz8.de where you will find the complete mirror of the site.

My thanks to Klarius for offering to use some of his web space and setting this up for me.
