"Game wont start on XP"
Just bought Wiz8 over the weekend but cannot get the game to start under Windows XP. The game installed w/o error and configured ok but when I start the game with cd3 in the drive nothing happens apart from the drive light flickering on/off. Can anyone help?

LAST EDITED ON Sep-29-03 AT 11:23 AM (Pacific)

When my old machine did that, it meant I had drive/controller overheating problems. If you just started up the chips should be cool.

When I installed the game on my old machine via the DVD drive, the game would not start. I had to install from the cd-rw drive and keep the key disk in there.

I have no problems on my new XP machine, except for a dark screen problem with OpenGL. Switching to DirectX solved that.

I'm having the exact same problem. I'm using an Inspirion 9100 laptop, running windows XP. My graphics card is an ATI MOBILITY 9700. I've allready tried changing the compatability mode, no help. Very frustraiting.

Hmm. I've done a little more research and now I'm fairly sure I've got a coppy protection problem. Common Problem 1.10 on the
Wiz 8 tech help page. It's game version 1.2.4. on the disks.
The Sirtech logo appears, but the game refuses to start up.

I tried following Sirtech's advice and copying the files from their alternate safedisk folder into my main Wiz8 directory (replacing the previous versions of the .exe and other two files) but this just makes a "windows has to close this program" message appear when I try to use the new .exe file.

I'm 99.99% sure I don't have any of the listed software that is supposed to cause this problem (Daemon tools, Playback, Insektor and Nero) I've combed my hard drive for them and used the windows explorer search tool without finding a thing.

This is driving me nuts. I desperatly want to replay this game. It worked on my old (now defunct) computer fine. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this problem, or a way around it? Is there some way to disable the copy protection? I don't want to copy it, just to enjoy the goddamn game!

1. Remove all the Wizardy folders/files from your computer
2. Run a defrag on your HD - twice.
3. Create a Wiz8 folder on your HD (either in just c:\ or program files folder)
4. Copy ALL the files from Every CD into this folder
5. Try to run the game by double-clicking on the wiz8.exe in that folder

Always remember the Tleilaxu Epigram:
Here lies a toppled god
his fall was but a small one
we did but build his pedestal
a narrow and a tall one.

Thank you for getting back to me myrddin. I followed your instructions, but no change.
The game still refuses to advance past the Sirtech logo.

This is very frustraiting. If anyone has any additional advice or theories I would greatly appreciate them.

rbrown mentions having some problems above when he installed the game using his DVD drive, but I only have a single combined
Samsung DVD/CD-RW drive. Could that have anything to do with the problem?

6. "Maybe reinstall"
Make sure you have admin rights on your XP login. Uninstall, reinstall, test. I know when the game first came out, I would fire it up sometimes and it would almost start, then exit. It would do this a couple times in a row sometimes.

Try right clicking Wiz8.exe, clicking the "Program Compatibility" tab, and setting it to another version of Windows. This worked for me when it stopped working on my machine.

Well, I finally got it running. I had to download a third party program to replace the .exe file and get around the damn copy protection. I'm not sure how legal that is and I don't want to violate any of the board's rules so I won't post the site.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice. I'm running the game in Win 2000 compatability mode and it's working beatifully so far. Now I just need to survive the run to Arnika ; )

Scratching my head here...still do not know why you cannot run Wiz 8 on XP. I run it on my laptop...running XP Home and I run it on my home computer...running XP Pro.

It runs great...

hm, try getting the exe crack that might do the trick, seems oxymoron but it might solve the problem.
