1. "You would have to edit manually"
You could either do what you suggest or change the item (if you have an item editor that will do that). Changing race is something most editor don't do, becuase of the working behind race that, to do it right, you have to figure out a lot more stuff (like setting the mana regen rates, intial hit points, etc.)

Well, race itself is a single byte (bit? whatever). I'm sorry I don't have the offset, but playing around with a hex-editor at home, I've been able to change race. The only times I've seen when mana regeneration rates need to be adjusted is in changes to or from a lizard (-1 mana regen, to a minimum of 1) or fairy (+1 mana regen). I've not seen a relationship between race and hit points. The only hit point factors appear to be class and vitality.
Although I've calculated base resistances for each race and class (at least, first level), I've never checked to see whether these are automatically recalculated for a change in race. My untested hypothesis is that if you change race and then raise a level, the game will recalculate resistances using the new level and the "new" race characteristics.

Side note: if you change race to an impossible number (e.g., change the race byte to "20," which doesn't track to any of the 11 races), attribute points won't go drop down to "racial" or class minimums. I haven't checked the effect on resistances.

(I've just been checking into these subjects because I'm wondering if there is a way to replace one or more of the "official" races with a new race. So far, this has been beyond my ability. Anyone with hints for a person with very limited programing background . . . .)

3. "Race, and beyond"
The race is s single byte, but the rest of the race-related stuff goes on an on. All of the individual resstances (to each realm) are based on race and class (and I think level).

So, if you can find where the "race template" is, you could really add (or replace) a race ...

p.s. Where ya been?

I've moved. (In fact, I should update my e-mail address with you, as my old address won't work anymore.)
Changed lots of other stuff, too:
-new state (missing those mild California winters and summers; love being back near the Utah mountains, where I grew up;
-bought a home - the American dream / gorgeous tax break
-kept the same wife, but added first child: son, now almost 10 mos. old.

I've been lurking, but infrequently.

5. "RE: You would have to edit manually"
Hi, I'm curious: I have some questions about class related mana regeneration. I've read around here, that the mana regen isn't updated when you change class? if so, is it changed when your vitality hits 16, or is that bonus just when you have vit 16+ on creation? You've wrote that mage starts with regen 3/3/2/2/2/3 (in Wiz 7, is it same in wiz 6?), is there a list somewhere which shows the class / mana regen relation?

Thanks,
Ferro

6. "Mana regeneration"
In Bane, mana regeneration is set at initial character creation and NEVER (at least as far as I have seen) changes. It does not matter if your vitality increases to 16+ or you change class. I do have a table for Bane mana rates. It is not the same as the mana rates in CODS. I do not recall all of the differences, and "pure" magic users - mages, priests, psionics and alchemists - may even be the same between the two systems. But the elite classes (samurai, bard, lord, valkyrie, ranger, ninja, monk) are different between the two games. In Bane, they are all 1s (i.e., same as fighters and thieves), in CODS, if memoray serves, they are generally one less than the analogous "pure" rate. For example, if mage is 3/3/2/2/2/3, a samurai is probably 2/2/1/1/1/2. Even here, however, I believe there is some variation (so a samurai may not be the same as a bard).
