"WizGold on Vista 64"
Does WizGold run on Vista 64-bit? When I get the initial popup screen to install, exit, etc, nothing happens when I click "install"-the button depresses and nothing happens. I can exit just fine, but nothing else.

Has anyone succeeded in getting WizGold running on Vista 64? I've tried everything I can think of to no avail, and after trying the abandonware Wiz 7 classic with Dosbox, I'd much rather have WizGold available if it's possible.

have you tried an alternate method of installing?
that is, open up the Gold CD in My Computer, and launch the Setup_full.exe file. the icon has a floppy disk in it.
maybe Vista and the Install Menu aren't getting along.
p.s. sorry if this seems confusing. I use XP 32 bit, and haven't used Vista but a little. enough to know there are different names for the same places, but that's about it.

Maybe try running it in application compatibility mode for Win98 or WinXP ?

Is gold really better than the CODS version? I only played gold for a little while, but didn't really think so. I mean I know they fixed diplomacy or something like that in gold, but I really don't know of any reason to play gold over the original DOS version.

For that version you should be playing the one of the wizardry archive disk from interplay. I think it has been fixed in regards to a few of the bugs. (For example holding the up arrow during character creation wont cause the exploit for stats to occur)

Anyone have a more complete idea on this?

I thought it is was broken in the "Gold" version (IOW, your diplomacy has no impact on game play). Most people found Gold a step down from the original version .. didn't like many things that changed, like portraits being too "cartoonish" or "anime".

I think the only real advantage it had was the popup automap.

I used to only play Gold because of the auto-map. When I played it on XP, I had to run it through the Mo'Slo program that I purchased so the text didn't zing by so fast you couldn't read it, but doing so made other parts of the game frustratingly slow too (fights, opening doors etc.)

My most recent play is now in a 64bit machine with Vista, and Gold seems completely incompatible. I tried installing it straight from the files, running them as administrator and in compatibility mode. . .nothing. It simply needs windows DLL's that are too old. The only way to make it happen is to do some technical stuff that I'm not experienced with enough to even know what I'm talking about (phrases like "setting up a virtual XP partition on your hard drive" or crazy junk like that.)

The only way I found this game can be played at all on 64bit Vista is by playing CotDS through dosbox. It was a huge barrier for me to get through to get used to playing without the auto-map, but the other benefits are well worth it once I got used to it! The text goes by at a manageable speed (a few times I wish I could skip it but meh), and fights and doors etc. also go by way faster than running the game in Mo'slo, and I actually find it to be less buggy (like "use an item" and pushing the left arrow instead of selecting a party member. . .great items but it doesn't help when their stats turn into poop an hour later)

Ok, I know I'm reviving a dead thread here, but since I just yesterday tried installing on an x64, I thought I'd revive it.

To get Gold working on x64, I took the following steps:

I "copied" my install directory from a x32 system where it was installed, onto the x64.

I then found wing32.dll in c:/Windows/System32/ and copied it to BOTH locations: c:/Windows/System32/ AND c:/Windows/SysWOW64/

It runs no problem. (WinG being what people used before DirectX came out).

Originally tried just coping the baseDir and res dir from the CD, but that failed. Best bet is to copy the directory directly from an x32 install.

Well, if you have the original code, you could repackage it with a 32 bit installer instead of a 16 bit installer... But from what I see, there's no real way to do it otherwise (tried the same thing as the Gold install, but "Error accessing the system registry", despite me exporting the registry keys to my x64 system from the x32 system).

Exported 8 dlls (mslt3032, mspx3032, mstx3032, mswng300, msxb3032, msxl3032, vb40032, vbdb32) to the wizedit folder to get past the initial errors.

After alot of searching the net, there is not an easy way to get Wiz Gold to work on Windows 7.

So I tried installing a Virtual XP; so far it works,

You will need a copy of XP (on disk) and I used a copy of Wiz Gold on CD.

So far its working ... sound seems to be a bit of an issue but I will work on that. I think it is more to do with my computer than anything. I only just installed it and wanted to post to help other out

See Link -> http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/11060/create-an-xp-mode-for-windows7-home-versions-and-vista/

Good Luck !!!

I wanted to play Gold because of the voices and auto map

You could also use VMWare Server, it's free. You'll need your XP disk and license though.
