"Wizardry 7 Questions"
Hey,

I'm a long time fan of Wiz7/Gold and I played Wiz8 too. I've never actually completed either ( =/ ), but I am going to try again as I have recently resparked my interest in Wiz7. I've read up on a lot of walkthroughs and various commentary and I have a few initial questions I wanted throw out (thanks!) :

------------------
Character Creation
------------------

(1) How does the random seed work for the bonus you get? What is the range of the bonus available? I think the highest I've seen is 21 or something but what is the max?

(2) How do you edit Wiz7/Gold to allow it to allow you to have more characters?

(3) Can you edit WizGold to add in pictures you've made for members of your party?

(4) Can you make your own items with an editor?

(5) How are skill bonuses per lvl generated? Both core/primary stats and skills w/i the three categories (and personal for that matter). For example, I was messing around in character creation and I found that out of trying to make a Faerie Mage (in 30 total tries) I found that the most thaumatergy one could start with was 6 and that highest bonus I could get was 7 for a total of 13 in thaumatergy at level 1 in the world. Is this the highest starting combination and how is this calculated?

(6) Furthermore, how are bonuses per lvl calculated. In all my experience, I can't recall getting more than 11 skill points skill based section per level up. Is this the max? What affects it? And does this mean that for a mage (building on Q#5), that the following is true:
level: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
thau: 13+11+11+11+11+11+11+11+11
total: 13 24 35 46 57 68 79 90 100

and thus by level 9, a mage can get nuclear bast (under ideal conditions)

(7) BASIC, do casting spells for a mage increase thaumatergy like swiinging a sword increases sword skill?

(8) are the character level requirements for spells in addition to magic skill requirements (ie 98 thau for nuclear blast)

(9) Where is the eleven bow found?

(10) Do fighters get more HP per level up than lords and valkeries? How are the HP per lvl up generated.

(11) Overall (if anyone knows) where can I basically find out the governing equations for how everything works? Stat lvl ups, modifiers, combat calculations, everything

(12) Would the best potential character not be

(a) Solo F/N that switches between every profession enough times so that he/she has every skill at 100, every spell, every school of magic at 999 MP, HP at 999, STA at w/e it's max is, and wielding CoC?

(b) Another class which can utilize *Light* weapons, the goal perhaps being to achieve the lowest possible AC and max possible resists. (and this class does ths same thing as the solo F/N)

conceivably, this would be best achieved by starting as a mage, and once you can cast nuclear bast at a high proficiency, switching classes at a location near a founation and a source of monster spawns that allow for massive exp from killing everything w/ just nuclear blast. If not playing solo and if you dont care about immediate faction loss (and I dont think a fountain is present hear) one example would be camping the auto-reseting encounter that spawns Umpani and Helazoids in the umpani city. NB will whipe out almost all of them for about 40-65k per fight. This allows any char to hit lvl 7-10 within a few fights and depending on your race/class and luck, how easily you can switch to another class (or whether you have to wait longer).

I have more questions, but they are random, like these, and I will post them later. Feel free to direct to me to other posts and websites, thanks!

> I think the highest

The max is 26. I believe the generation is the same as in Bane (although MadGod is the expert in this and can confirm). There is essentially a 1/10 chance of getting +8 and 1/100 chance of getting +16 to a base "roll" of 1d6+4.

>(2) How do you edit Wiz7/Gold
>to allow it to allow
>you to have more characters?

I believe this is impossible.

>(3) Can you edit WizGold to
>add in pictures you've made
>for members of your party?

This has been done. Search the forum and you may find posts on it, although they are probably very old.
>
>(4) Can you make your own
>items with an editor?

Yes. MadGod's Cosmic Forge is the undisputed best. I posted a link for it in reply to one of your other posts.

>(5) How are skill bonuses per

Download the Cosmic Forge. One of the options in it will explain how these are calculated and what the ranges are.

See the previous answer.

>(7) BASIC, do casting spells for
>a mage increase thaumatergy like
> swiinging a sword increases
>sword skill?

No. You can only increase Thaumaturgy, Theology, Theosophy, Alchemy and Kirijutsu by adding points at creation or level up. They do not increase with use like they can in W8.

>(8) are the character level requirements
>for spells in addition to
>magic skill requirements (ie 98
>thau for nuclear blast)

None. If you have the appropriate skill level, you can learn the available spells, regardless of your character level. A level 1 mage with 98 thaumaturgy can learn any thaumaturgy spell at level up.

>(9) Where is the eleven bow
>found?

In CODS, it's in a chest in the Dragon Caves. Again, the Cosmic Forge can tell you EXACTLY where. (Another is available in Bane and importable to CODS, and from there to W8, but that wasn't your question, was it?)

>(10) Do fighters get more HP
>per level up than lords
>and valkeries? How are
>the HP per lvl up
>generated.

No (Lord) and yes (Valk). Again, the Cosmic Forge will answer this question.

>(11) Overall (if anyone knows) where
>can I basically find out
>the governing equations for how
>everything works? Stat lvl
>ups, modifiers, combat calculations, everything

To the extent the info's available, in the Cosmic Forge; not all of this is currently available.

>(12) Would the best potential character
>not be . . .

The best potential character(s) is (are) the one(s) you enjoy playing.

And welcome to our little community. Make yourself comfortable, and feel free to stay awhile.

thanks scary. in reference to #2, I don't mean playing with more than 6 ppl in your party, I mean editting the game such that you don't have to delete characters (or move the files) after you have 15 or so created (whatever the max is).

also, where can i find the cosmic forge? thanks!

The way to do this is to have multiple editions of the pcfile, each of which can hold (I believe) 16 characters. The catch is that GENERALLY you will only be able to make parties of characters from the same pcfile.

In CODS (i.e., the DOS version),the pcfile is pcfile.dbs. Judging by Sphynx's posts, in Gold it may be called pcfile.gld. Just create a copy (pcfile.one), then go back and delete the characters in the original and generate new ones. Rinse and repeat.

WizFan, make an actual login ID here so I can send you a private message. BTW, you can't create or login with FireFox (archaic forum code here) so if you're using FireFox you'll ahve to do like me and keep Internet Explorer around purely for the purpose of logging on here (It's honestly the ONLY reason I even have IE)

What is broken in FireFox? I had registration turned off for a while, due to spammers signing up for accounts (then apparently never using them ... ?)

I've turned it back on now ... we'll see what happens. I've also change the way registration works ... it emails you a random password (so it would require a valid email to register ... unlike before).

I'm almost positive I've posted ont he WizGold and Wiz8 boards before, I just lost interest for a while so I stopped. I definitely remember Llevram though. I'll try again.

Hey Llevram,

It's been a while since I last posted here and I think I did have a registered account before. I'm pretty sure I used teh name "WizFan", but when I try to register it tells me that is taken. Also, when I tried to make a new account and use my emails "edited", it tells me my email is taken. Do you think you could check for me to see what user login is associated with my email? I just can't remember =( Thanks!

-Editor's note - not a good idea to put your email out in the clear, especially with all the spammer traffic we have een getting (the price of popularity

I will send you your login info.

Doesn't save the cookies. I 'login' with FireFox and am still a 'guest'. Somehow the cookie storage is happening wrong. I can't see the script for cookie storage (or logging in even), so can't advise, but you simply can't login with FireFox.

I can't use FireFox on any computer. I know when you first start FireFox up, you're given the chance to import the settings of other browsers. If the cookie moves with those settings you might reamin logged in from having been logged in with another browser. But I think if you log out, you won't be able to log back in.

Strange, and I'm positive there was no user error.

I click on Login, my user and password are stored (but I re-enter them to make sure), and I get the Loading Page, Please Wait... page. 2 microseconds later it moves on to the main page with the option to 'login' (vs 'logout' in that location).

I have no error to give, I could give screenshots, but that seems futile. It simply doesn't log me in. Not a huge dedal, like I said, I keep IE purely for this site, but it does not work. And as WizFan has asserted, it does not work for him either. I will try un-installing various plugins, see if it's a software issues, since I realize I've given you zilch to work with, but I can't think of anything I could attempt that I haven't already done.

16. "Try this ..."
Maybe the lobby page is cached and still just shows the "login" link, even though you are logged in.

Try this (in FireFox):

1) Log out
2) Log in
3) Go to the W8 - general discussion (Destination Dominus) forum (which requires you to be logged in to post)
4) Try starting a new post or replying to an existing one

If it let's you, then the issue was just caching on the lobby page .. if not, I'll continue to scratch my head

Good to know we are consiidered IE worthy though ... not sure I would visit the site if I had to use IE just for that

Of course I've tried that (minus step 1, since there's never a logout link to click on). The 'Name' box opens up so that you have to fill in a guest name. So I'm guessing I'm not logged in.

Did some de-bugging. After completing a 'Login' with FireFox, I click on 'See who's online' and I see my online loggin time has changed to the current time. So, it's logging me in, but not maintaining it.

Seems like a Cookies error, but I checked under Options, Privacy, Cookies and I allow all sites to create cookies (Exceptions box is empty).

I check my cookies, and the following cookies are visible to me:

LastVisitCookie (Two of these)
CurrentSessionCookie
TimeStampCookie (Two of these)
DCForumSessionID
LoggedUser

So, the cookies are being created. I'm simply not logged in. It's like there's a missing check to verify that you've got the cookie set. Maybe IE is just persistant on holding onto a sessionID moreso than FireFox, though that doesn't explain why it'd work for you....

Anyhows, that's all I can think to debug. Maybe something there is helpful.
