"basic question..."
does party order have any effect? it seems that I cannot attack with people that are in the back, but i dont see how it works. ie, my samurai can attack from spot 3 but not from 4, whilst my ninja can attack from 4 but not 5 unless he is using ranged.

1. "RE: basic question..."
Party order does indeed have an affect on gameplay. Think of the party travelling in a triangle shape. The first three members of the party (the two on the top row and the middle on the right) can attack with any size weapon and generally get attacked more often. The final sixth position generally gets attacked the least. The first three members can use any weapon to attack physically, while the back three characters would require an extended, long or thrown weapon to reach the front.

Essentially there are 4 weapon ranges: short, extended, long and thrown. When you assay an item you can see the range (its in the bottom left corner and deonoted by a the appropriate letter). Short weapons allow the first three members to attack any of the first two groups of monsters. Extended allows any party member to attack the first two monster groups. Thrown allows any player character to attack one of the first three, and long ranged weaponry allow any party member to attack any monster group.

Click on one party member (the cursor should change to a pointing finger and say WHO?) and then click on the one to switch with.

Click on their name only. It's a very small area that you can click on to move them, you have to click directly on their name.
