"Deleting characters from active party?"
Hi,

I've just started a new game of Wizardry Gold, with a party I imported from a finished game of Wizardry VI. I'm playing with a single character which in Wizardry VI I got around by just bringing a second character with me who was dead, since that game forces you to take at least two characters.

Now that I don't need that second character anymore, is there any way to get rid of them in Wizardry Gold?

That depends: do you hexedit?

If not, then the answer is no. There is no method to (legally) remove a character from a party and reduce your party size.

If yes, then there is a bit (or is it a byte?) almost at the very beginning of the party information that designates the number of characters in the party. If you change this from "2" to "1", the second character in your party will suddenly disappear. (For that matter, you can make him, her or it magically re-appear by changing the number back to "2.")

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any obvious place for that number to be. However, there were a lot less twos in the file than there would normally be in a file that size, so I was able to try changing each of them manually, which would normally take too long.

Thank you for the help.

For anyone who runs into this problem and knows the basic use of a hex editor (which is really all I can claim), the offset is 00002396. That is assuming the location doesn't shift around, of course. If that offset matches your party size, try changing it to the desired number, after backing up your save file first, naturally.

One caveat, you shouldn't change that number to something higher than you originally started with ... you would get unexpected results

Indeed. I think I experimented with that once, when I first discovered the byte: the savegame file would not load. (That was in Bane, but I'm sure the result would be similar in CODS.)
