"Rats! How do I get the map from them?"
My crew are now 19th level and have done everything they can do on the mainland. Loring has determined that the Rattkin have the Legend Map. I talked to Bertie and Bleinmeis, and they don't have it. Mick the Pick and Ratsputin are dead (I didn't do it). Barlone keeps saying "mebbe we'll ask you for another favor" and throws me out of his hideaway. So how do I get the map from them?

If Mick and Ratsputin are dead, you can't get the map from Barlone. Without being able to 'bribe' one of those 2 ratkins, you can't do anything further with barlone. If you'd bribed them when you had a chance, he'd have let you in.

2. "You can edit your file ..."
... to make it look like you bribed them. Of course, it's easier just to edit in a Legend Map.

forget the previous message, I figured out how to do it.

Takes away from the game, tho, to be in an unwinnable situation. It takes way too long to get into Rattkin land and Mick and Ratsputin are not strong NPC characters.

Also, the *LEGEND* map shows up with a dagger icon instead of the usual icon. It can be read and everything, but I find that strange.

yah, well, drop it and pick it up again, and it'll look like a "map" again.

All you have to do is right at your first visit to New City say the magic word to the Priest Rulae, and that side of the fountain complex will open up where the Legend map will still be in its chest.
I discovered this my first time through (in German, even--it's the same word in English with a minor spelling difference), after saying quite a number of "sacred" words...(you also actually only need one of the words, i think Xen tells you to say a two-word phrase, but the adjective is unnecessary)

I think he was talking about the old manual Hex Edit. (?)

I remember changing the code and having to drop and pick up the item to get it to work. I think. Been a while....
