"Wiz 7 or Gold, Which is better?"
Are there any game play differences in terms of bugs being fixed? Don’t know myself.

Gold – I played this for the first time I was impressed by the sound overs. The annotation is amazing. It’s a shame that the text and the sound has to be tweaked to perfection to be synchronous. I don’t like the window mode, and the buttons are hard to click on and takes all the fantasy out of the game. Great idea to bring it back into the market though and it can be played in windows, the game should live forever!

Wiz 7(original) – Aww wow, I remember playing this for the first time. Its how the game was supposed to be played, full screen, amazing sounds that just set the fantasy setting, the map came with it as well, colour and everything pinned to the wall, couldn’t keep my eyes off it.

Which version feels better to you.

1. "Both have their points"
I like the interface (especially the popup map) in Gold better, but prefer the graphics and sounds in the Original.

Gold has better character portraits and an awesome narrator in my opinion. However, the combat speed, the level and diplomacy bugs, the bad voice acting for just about everyone else and the pretty ugly interface are all drawbacks.

I would recommend the original, but I suggest you give both a whirl!

Chris

3. "What is the level bug?"
I know about the diplomacy thing, but don't recall any issue with level (unless you mean the 100 in all skills prevents you from leveling up, but there is a patch for that).

I started a new game, the original Wizardry 7. I haven’t played the older version in, phoar over 10 years easy. I swear the sounds are different in this version, the version is 1.30, are there different versions or patches? Either that or the sounds are corrupt, or my brain is corrupt.

If I remember correctly, Wiz Gold becomes unplayable once you ship the ocean. It's then: Step - wait - step - wait etc.
In Wiz7 movement is much faster (via keyboard), which makes the long distances the party have to travel much more bearable.

Wizardry Gold has only one true advantage: the automap
The biggest problem of Gold is the very slow mana regeneration
I recommend the DOS version with Dosbox

Hmm in wiz gold, my rogue can't attack with a dagger, she can only throw/ range. If the rogue is 3rd in line she can attack but now she is the 4th person in the group. Even my cleric who is 5th can attack. So now my rogue is stuck parrying every fight every battle every turn, was this the way it was meant to be? oh and my mage cannot attack either, parry parry parry two useless meleeer's. Does wiz 7 have this problem as well? can wiz gold sgm file be used in wiz 7 imi thinking about switching.

9. "Move them!"
Click on the portrait then click on another partrait and they'll move position. Or drag them around??? I know they can be rearranged.

I forgot: this is a bit tricky, but i don't remember how, as i've played with only 3 or fewer for a couple years now.

In Wiz 7 the first three characters (counting from left to right, just as would read) are the front liners. They are the only ones who can attack with short ranged waepons, auch as swords etc.
Number 4+5 are the ones standing behind them. They can attack with extended weapons (Polearms, spears etc.).
The sixth character is again standing behind them. If I remember correctly, he can't reach the enemy only with ranged attacks or spells. On the other hand this is the most protected position, for he in turn can only be attacked by ranged attcks or spells. This is THE spot for the wimpy mage
Otter already explained how to change positions (I think it was right-clicking on the name).

cool thanks ill try that,

but i am really stuck, maybe i created a crappy team but.. 2 fighters, 1 valkrye, 1 thief, 1 priest, 1 mage. level 7 team, i get my ass handed to me when i fight the munks in the 2nd town after crossing the river. And i dont even stand a chance in the other direction where the lizards/ orc road is, where the orc warns you not to go into that area. Seems like i cant advance at all and the enemies dont give me very significant xp at this point, just the monks are tearing right through my figheters.

You're trying that at level 7?! Unless you've been class changing like mad you won't have a chance outside of New City or the starter area at that level. Try exploring the forest after the starter dungeon, I think that should get you to about level 8-10. Personally, I don't think I've ever gone into New City without being at least level 7.

Wiz 7 is better. Its the first version I played when I was 14, and so I guess Im baised. At any rate wiz 7 had it all right, with few bugs, where as Gold messed it slightly up with several bugs.

But if I was stripped of wiz 7 and only had it to play, I could live with Gold.

My Priest in Position 6 can still attack with a Quarterstaff in CODS?
Can extended weapons therefore be used in all positions?

you can't reach the third-or-farther-back enemy group. (but that only rarely happens)

I like Gold a lot better. I played Gold before I ever tried Wiz7:CDS so I don't have to overcome any nostalgia about it. Gold just has better atmosphere IMO. The voice acting is no worse than most games of that era(which is not to say it is 'GOOD' but...) adn the narration is good. I never had any real problems with bugs so... *shrug*. Graphics are prettier(Wiz 7's character portraits are too pixelated and ugly) in Gold and I simply cannot enjoy a game without automapping anymore.

Plus Gold has that in game walkthrough/hint guide thingie. I am not big on using such guides myself but in a game as big and confusing as Wiz 7/Gold it is a good idea.

Overall I think the complaints that 'oldtimers' have over Gold are overstated.

17. "Eh, what's that, Sonny ;-?"
Oldtimers .... a.ka. "those who know what they are talking about"

It's the same with anything like this, where there is one version, then another ... like the book, then the movie. Or the movie, the remake, and the remake of the remake.

Those who fall in love with the original, usually prefer it to the knock off.

Take King Kong ... I think I saw the original as a kid ... liked it. Then saw the remake when I could appreciate movies and loved it ... then saw (most of ... well, all I could stomach and fast forward through) the Peter Jackson waste of 3 hours ... how someone goes from LotR to that, I'll never know.

A lot of it has to do with expectations ... not being met. If you expect something to be the worst thing ever and find it mediocre, you are much more pleased than if you expected excellence, yet found mediocrity ... this was the case with most of us that had the chance, nay, the good fortune to experience Wiz 7 before "gold"

You expect a lot from "gold" ... had they named it Wizardry Bronze .. it may have been better received (by those of us eagerly anticipating Wizardry 8 ... not Wizardry 7 - the remake)

I played Gold before I ever tried Wiz7:CODS, too.
But I like more the CODS.
CODS has somehow a better mood and a faster mana regeneration.
I know the maps by head ;)
