"about the maps"
It was said in a post below that time does not matter in getting them, just where you go first determines which ones you get.

How does it work then??

1. "RE: about the maps"
i'm not sure any more about exactly which maps get taken if you get to other ones first, i lost my notes, and haven't been collecting maps for a long time. You only need to ever have one of them in your possession anyway, and you can get that one right away in N.C. (and if you're looking for money, just recharge some amulets up to max and sell them).
I do remember fairly clearly, though, the one in the Dane tower is there if you go there before you've been in the T'rang city, and the Old City one stays until you've been to Munkaharma.
I'm pretty sure the map(s) in Munkaharma get taken if you've been to the Gorns first (or maybe Old City?).
There is no route, at least that i could work out, that lets you get all the maps that are in chests.

2. "RE: about the maps"
I know that I don't need all of them in order to win...

I am just curious as to what triggers what so I can get most or maybe all of them outright.

So it is Dane Tower before Nyctalith and Munkharama before Old City /Orkogre Castle??

I also seem to remember from my last game that "legally you cannot go to Old City before talking to the Razuka in RR because they tell Wunderland to give you the password and I intend to do this without cheating.

Does anyone know the perfect order where to go first in order to get all the maps??

3. "Say The Word"
I can't agree about the password. I went through the game my first time without any walkthroughs or other help, and as i do the first time through in every game i play i said everything i could think of to everyone who would listen. Once i had seen the sign on the OC entrance, i filled in the blanks to figure out what the word was, and when i said it to the Prof, i got the key. Just as i said every holyish word i could think of to the priest in the temple, and got into where the map is there without having met the person i was supposed to get the hint from. There are some places where this wasn't possible, where the "password" was a much more complicated or unexpected thing, and in places where you had to go complete something before the password would work, even if you knew it--so no, don't think in terms of "legal", but in terms of "possible" or "likely": the Prof. clue is "likely", esp if you've seen the sign, and the priest clue is at least "possible".

4. "Even so"
I don't quite remember what was on the sign but I think you had to ask about the "Old Archives" in order to get the key and THIS is nowhere mentioned except by thr Razuka. Am I not right?? Don't know about the priest though, I just thought that his puzzle is a lot more "linear" as compared to the Old City one.

Still I wonder about the maps problem.

5. "RE: Even so"
The sign says archives, if you supply the h and i. It was very obvious to me. And "archives" is all you have to say to the prof.

6. "RE: Even so"
Ok. if you emplay the say everything to everybody method. How would you know logically though that the old rattkin in the library would know about the archives. I always used to rely on the rumors that you pay 50 gp for and that tell you how to get into the arms of argus, but there is no such rumor that tells you to ask the rat about Old city. Only the rattkin do this later. So we're both right. You can get there without cheating when you just guess what to say to the guy but frankly I have to admit that when I first played the game in the nineties, I did not get te clue until the ratman told me.

Let's use the rest of this thread for discussing the map problem rather than Old city though. I am still wondering about hte perfect route to all the maps.

7. "RE: Even so"
i've been avoiding that because i don't remember it any better than in my first response, and i'm not going to play again to test it out. I do remember it was possible to get most of the ones in chests, but i'm not sure the route. My route through the game the last dozen or so times was the most efficient for getting the best goodies to import into W-8, and not worrying about even finishing. Before that, for years i hadn't even bothered with the maps i could have gotten, so my optimum-map-route is long gone from memory.

If you aren't fast enough to get the maps, the maps will come to you. Just pickpocket them from the npcs stalking you, or even buy them. I remember getting all the maps easily this way, eventhough I used to zig-zag through the various locations and missing a good deal of maps in chests.

9. "RE: I know I'll win in the end BUT..."
I know that, however many of the maps I find in the first place in the chests, that I will have acces to all of them in the end. What I don't know and want to know, however, is if you can possibly beat the NPC parties to all of the other maps (i. e. if the game's mechanics allow this) and if so, how? I've just noted in an earlier post that time is NOT the factor. If it does not matter how long you toddle around here and there, then it must be the follow-up of game events that triggers which maps get taken before you can reach them. I just wonder what rules apply here, but strangely, nobody seems to know.

10. "light at the end of the tunnel"
I have a hazy memory that Ravashack had tested the map issue some years ago, and he has possibly included this information in his walkthrough, which might still be available somewhere on this site.

11. "Light enough without maps!"
I still don't understand the need here. There's only one map you need to ever have in your possession. The others are only clues, and i've finished the game dozens of times without ever having even touched any of them, except the one that you need to "use".
