"CoDS + DOSbox + Linux"
All right, here's the deal:

I have a "pirate" copy of Wizardry 7, since imemorial times.

I used to play it in my old 486 perfectly, then I started to face some troubles on the newer Pentium plataforms.

That was corrected with the patch, but even so it only worked on the 166 MHz, maybe 233.

The fact is that even with the patch, the game no longer runs on new computers.

Very recently, I was able to "hijack" a old computer destined to the trash in my workplace. It happens to be my very same 486 I used in the past. I re-installed my CoDS on this computer, and once again, it worked perfectly.

But now (NOW? It's been a while, already), there's DOSbox.

So, what did I do? I copied the game from the 486 machine, and transferred it to my computer at work (Intel Celeron D 2.53 GHz), running Linux (Fedora 3).

So far so good. My DOSbox is working marvelously with games like Monkey Island, Flashback, Doom, SimCity 2000 and Wing Commander 1.

However, when it comes to Wiz7, it fails to load.

I tried two instances:

- using the original DS.EXE file;
- using the patched DS.EXE file.

The first returns a message like: "Program improperly loaded or infected by virus. Error code = 10"

The other one is "SYSTEM ERROR: Unable to Open SCENARIO.HDR"

And the game is working fine in my 486.

For what I see, several people here have the game working properly on their machines with DOSbox, tho so far I've only seen threads about Win98 or XP. Nothing about linux.

Anybody have any clues?

Ok, nevermind, people. I've figured it out just a few minutes ago.

Here's what I did (for someone who may be needing some help):

I installed the game like I said above, but I used the DS.EXE --WITHOUT-- the cdsup.exe patch.

So I was receiving that weird virus message. Then I applied the patch and the game ran marvelously. Very weird.

I tought that the patch was intended for Pentium machines ONLY.

Anyway, it seems perfect now.

The CoDS version from the Ultimate Wizardry Archives runs fine with DOSBox under Debian Sid, with sound and music and everything. Just for the record. Glad you got yours running, too, eventhough it's an evil pirate copy - but well, might be that I started with a 2 floppy disks copy from a friend back in 1992, too...

If I could find an original copy of the game, I would surely buy it. ;)

I started Wiz8 with a pirate copy too, but I ended up buying the real thing.

About the sound: like everyone else said, the sound effects run a little fuzzy. The music is perfect. But if I configure the game to use the PC speaker for sound effects, it improves dramatically.

Go figure, had the same experience. First, music would not play, only sound effects (through boxes, not PC speaker). I then configured sound and music and saw that the sound had been initially set to PC speakers. Turned both sound and music to sound blaster and the sounds wouldn't sound quite right anymore. Turned back sound to PC speaker and had perfect sound and music.
