"Dionysceus / Hidden Room.... *Legend* Map?"
In the Temple of Deadly Coffers, there is a room that can be reached by swimming to the south wall in the eastern-most room and pressing a button on the wall. I'm sure you experts are very familiar with the treasure chest in this room-- what does it contain? I seem to remember it being empty or not having much in the original Wizardry 7.

I haved just reached this chest in the Playstation version of this game, and the chest is far from empty. In Japanese there is a message about something being wrapped up nicely in cloth, seemingly left there just for you to come and take it. Everytime I open it, it automatically contains:

*The Legend Map
*The Fang (a great one-handed weapon I remember from Bane)
*A Cameo Locket (an accessory for a male character, with -4AC, +1 HP regeneration, and 30% death resistance-- also from Bane).

There is also a slight chance of the chest containing:
*Ring of the Stars (-4AC, 50% Hypnosis/Psionic resistance--I remember having this while playing Crusaders or Bane before, but I don't remember where)
*A Diamond Ring (from Bane-- -5AC, 50% magic resistance for a female character, or access to another room in the Hall of Preservation)

If you open the chest many times or are lucky enough, the chest will contain all five items!

The items from Bane were implanted into this game because you can never import a party from Bane into the Playstation. What interests me is the *Legend* Map-- I seem to remember seeing Kymas Turan having it before coming to the Dane Tower, so I think the map is also definitely in its usual position in New City. I wonder if the makers of the PSX version put two *Legend* maps in the game just in case you get stuck (for example if an inaccessible Don Barlone got the map) or in case you want to finish the game quickly and don't know where the *Legend* has been taken. Or perhaps there is only one *Legend* Map, and this map automatically gets transferred into this chest somehow? In either case, this is a major change from the original CoDS, and makes me wonder what is important about this treasure chest in the hidden room of the Dane Tower in the original game.

you can get it in the PC version of Wiz 7 and Gold, by completing the Land of Dreams, and choosing the Ring as your gift. not much reason to choose it over the Amulet of Healing (which has +1 regen, as well)

2. "Ring of Invisibility vs. Ring of Stars"
In the Land of Dreams, you can pick up the Ring of Invisibility. The Ring of Stars can only be obtained in Bane (in the DOS/Gold/non-PSX versions of the game(s)). This can be verified (and has been) by a quick search of the CODS treasure list: the Ring of Stars is not a part of any listed treasure.

As for the usual contents of the hidden chest in the Temple of Deadly Coffers, it looks like it is supposed to contain the *Crystal* Map, and nothing else.

I have the spoiler book at home, I will check it tonight. As I recall ...

1) The room is not shown.

2) It is shown but the only message concerns an empty chest.

actually, the room contains the *Crystal* map, but usually NPCs get it first, and they take the map and 5,000 gold. I have no idea how long it takes for an NPC to get it, since by the time I can get to it, it's long gone.

I believe KYMAS TURAN gets it in the beginning of the game (not in the very beginning, but soon enough, so you cannot get to it first, because your characters are too weak).

I used my editor to what's going on, while playing.

7. "Getting That Map"
I often go through the orchid field right after i first go to to New City (to get some Spear +2's from Boery) I just save each successful step until i get through. I go to the Danes only to get the mental discipline skill. Then i leave the rest of the "tower" unfinished until later. So i've been there to get the Crystal map before Kymas gets to it.

Yes, you can get the ?CRYSTAL? map from that chest before any NPCs do.

If you go on a circuit to get all the maps in my experience, ?CRYPT? is the hardest one to grab (even though I usually have Nuclear Blast at that point).

Thank you all for the information. The mystery of what was in that chest in the original CoDS has been solved at last (for me at least!)

Just an update on what has been going on-- I bought the *Crystal* map from Zen Xheng later (I am not sure how he got it, because in the PSX version if the chest that usually has the *Crystal* map does not have it, how does the map get into circulation?)

I ended up getting the original *Legend* map (from the stairs behind Father Rulae) when I defeated the Magna Dane (I guess Kymas Turan had given the map to Torquesade). Now I have two identical *Legend* maps in my possession. I understand that the game makers were trying to remedy the problem of the *Legend* map potentially getting stuck, but I think it is tacky to have two of the same map, and the game makers should have found other means of preventing it.

This brings me to the question of-- in what cases is it possible for a map to get stuck forever in the possession of an NPC? Besides the already discussed Barlone situation (You do the favor for him, but Ratsputin and Mick the Pick are already dead, so you are never given the chance to attack Barlone or complete the deal) I thought of another case where a map could get stuck. If you give the *Boat* map to H'Jenn-Ra T'Rang, or if you have it but refuse to give it to her/him, it seems to me as though he/she refuses to see you in the throne room again-- and at that point the only way to have contact is to proceed through the dungeon, use the Thermal Pineapple on the eggs, and then make an attack. However, if you used up the Thermal Pineapple before reaching the eggs, or if Ukpyr got destroyed before you go the Thermal Pineapple, isn't it true that you can never reach H'Jenn-Ra, and if he/she has the *Legend* map, you will be stuck?
