"A Problem With..."
...Queequeg and the treasure chest on the mountain.

I've started the game with three characters (Rawulf Sam., Dwarf Valk., and a Faerie Bard/thief) Once I had completed the Castle... or as much as I could at that point, I headed out to the mines. On one trip out onto the mountain, I got to the treasure chest that contained, among other things, the bag of trinkets. I had the bard/thief do a inspect and found "No Trap" ! So, I opened it. Low and behold: One note from the Queequeg and the bag. I haven't talked with him at any point while in the castle and sat staring at the screen wondering: "What the...??"

Any ideas, anyone??

Hagaar.

i'm not sure, but i think you have to kill him. i remember trying your scenario as well, and i sat there at the mountain thinking "that little bugger! he knew the location of the treasure all along!"

You must have talked to the captian and got his hook. That is the flag( saying Skeleton Crew as the password) in the game that puts the note from Queegberg in the chest.

Yes, I tried to pick up the treasure without telling
him the location, but somehow he beat me to it anyway.
Guess you do have to off the little bugger.

What's so special with his treasure anyway. You only get a coaxial plate that reduces the armorclass by two even if you don't wear it. Scrolls and potions which are unuseful to me are present in there. By the way, what does bauble & trinklets do?

5. "traditionally"

the bauble & trinkets are given to the amazulu queen to ease her anger... however, she will accept any trivial gift - a potion, a scroll, some arrows, etc.

It's a while ago, but don't the bauble & trinkets anger the queen when offered to her? I vaguely remember that I had to pay some 3000 gold pieces to calm her again as I gave the bauble & trinkets to her...

You're absolutely correct. That's about the only thing you may NOT give the queen.
But I do wonder why they 've put it in. Perhaps it transfers to Wizardry 8?

I think they put it in as kind of a joke. When the Queen asked for something, the first thing I thought of was the Baubles and Trinkets. What else do you give the savage natives? Another puzzle solved. Of course, things didn't work out liked I'd planned, and I thought the turn of events was great fun.
