LAST EDITED ON Feb-21-09 AT 05:30 PM (Pacific)For that version of Wizardry 7, the installation program installs it in c:\dsavant if I remember.
First download and apply the "Wiz 7 Patch" and the "Wiz 7 Pentium Flaw Patch" from my web site at http://www.zimlab.com/wizardry.
Also get Mo'Slo, otherwise the program just goes too fast, just search the net for it.
In C:\dsavant create a file called DSAVANT.BAT if it is not there already that would start Mo'Slo and ds.exe, it should look something like:
@echo off
cls
Moslo %1 ds
, then right-click it and choose properties and go to the "Compatibility" tab, choose to run the program in Windows 95 compatibility mode, also put a check in the box title "Disable visual themes". Click "Ok" to save the changes, then double-click the "DSAVANT.BAT" file to start the game, it worked for me.
Also, and alternative for Wizardry 7 (CODS) is to play Wizardry Gold (which is Wizardry reprogrammed for a Windows enviroment with better graphics and sound and is available in The Ultimate Wizardry Archives.) I can often be found on eBay for a cheap price.
Ultimately you could run it just like in the old days... in pure DOS mode, with the DOS real-mode sound and mouse drivers just like when we all used to do it that way... although it is more complicated to setup compared to today where everything is automatic with modern games, get a friend who knows the old DOS ways. The only problem with this is you can't run any other programs at the same time.
Best of luck.
