"Learning Spells"
When learning spells in Wizardry 7, does it matter what spell level you learn them at? If you learn them with the level 1 dice selected, will you never be able to cast that spell above its level 1 form?

1. "RE: Learning Spells"
let's take Nuclear Blast, as an example. Nuclear Blast is a Level 7 mage spell, however, you can learn it at any time your Thaumaturgy is 98 (I think that's the point at which the spell becomes learnable)
however, you will need to be at level 8, and have the Fire Spell Points to cast it (not really a problem since you do gain 12 points when you learn it), in order to cast it at level 2 power level. at level 9, you can cast it at level 3, and so on.
in short, your magic user just isn't at high enough level, and you probably put so many Acedemia points into it, as well as the little bonus automatically added to the primary skill (mage-thaumaturgy), that you were able to learn the spell quicker than was intended. another thing, is that you may haev overlooked the amount of spell points needed to cast it at higher levels.
which means, if you class change, your mage turned Samurai (example), can cast Nuclear Blast, but only at level 1, until his/her Samurai level gets to 8, then s/he can cast level 2 Nuclear Blast spell.

2. "RE: Learning Spells"
Does anyone have (or know where) a definitive list of Dragon2K's Nuclear Blast Example would be, for all classes/spells?

E.G.:
Spell Name
Class Level Spell can be used (and die power can be cast at)
Skill points needed to learn

If not I may start one myself, as it would be useful, especially for party's that change professions alot...

oh, i responded to the original poster's question then noticed it was asked almost two years ago...

Caster Level, School and Realm Skills all determine when you can learn a given spell, and all that info is in the manual.

3. "To Answer Your Actual Question:"
When you learn a new spell on levelling, the power level buttons are on the spell-selection screen only because it was easier to leave them there. They do absolutely nothing to the program.
