"WizEdit now working on Windows 7 & 10"
So, thanks to Greg Campbell, I was able to get WizEdit working on Windows 10 (and he verified it worked on Windows 7). I updated the download page to include a .zip file with the necessary stuff.

The problem was the 20-year old install process doesn't understand the newer Windows registry. So, the .zip file includes a .reg file with the necessary entries.

Wouldn't do anything on windows 8, either that or I didn't go to the right place to download it.

Well, if it worked on 7 and 10, I would think the same fix would work for 8 ... but the even numbered Windows release have always been the crappy ones.

I will give it a shot on my wife's laptop and let you know what I find.

Princess Bride quote: You'd like to think that, wouldn't you!?!?

Damn Windows 8 ... ya, it didn't work for me. Same error,

permission denied run time error 70

... that we were getting on Windows 7 & 10 .... same fix worked for both of those, so not sure why it doesn't work on Windows 8. I will look into it more and see if I can find something about that.

Like many forays into fixing IT crap, you try something, it doesn't work, repeat ad nauseam, it finally works. Then you are left with figuring out of the 15 things I tried, which 2 or 3 are actually what fixed it and needed for the streamlined solution.

So, in that process, I forgot this little gem:

I got it! Found a post (http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?618139-RESOLVED-Runtime-error-70-Permission-denied) that had the answer. I have searched, using various keywords and phrases, many, many times, all to no avail until just now. The answer (as spelled out in that forum), is to turn off User Access Control (aka Account Control Settings). (go to start, type: UAC ... ) My bar was set to the default, I dragged it down to the bottom to turn it off, restarted, and it looks like everything works. I guess WizEdit is wanting to do things that are beyond what is allowed for a User, even when running in Admin mode.

So, as that is changing security settings on your PC, I would recommend, if you are going to do that, you do it, use WizEdit, then put the security settings back their previous setting. It's a pain because you have to reboot for it to take effect each time.

And it is easy to forget .. I just found I forgot after resting the need for changing the User Account Control Settings.

So, hopefully this fixes WizEdit for you on Windows 8 as well (I assume there is the same thing in Windows 8), since it is still there in Windows 10.

Also, I thought my wife's PC was Windows 8 ... it is 10 (and for some reason all these fixes didn't work on her PC, but there is always a lot that doesn't seem to work on her PC).

So, anyhow, let me know how it goes ...

I'm in IT and my job is to make programs work on computers.

And I've been running a lot of old games on my computers over the years.

So, you might be very interested in knowing this: I supposed Microsoft listened to customer complaints starting with Version 1709 (Fall Creators Update) of Windows 10... yes, that's the 4th released generation of Windows 10 (make sure you are up-to-date). Prior to that version Windows 10's implementation of UAC (User Account Control) was really fraked with all sorts of problems if you tried to disable it. Now it works like it used to in Windows 7. Another consideration is whatever games you install avoid installing in C:/Program Files (x86) nor C:/Program File since Microsoft is still playing behind the scenes tricks with file rights in those folders as well as the Windows Desktop (surprise!). I usually install all games in C:\games. Now here's the best way to disable UAC (User Account Control) on Windows 10 that I've found so far... create a file called maybe disableUAC.reg and put the following text in it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

"EnableLUA"=dword:00000000

Then save the file somewhere on your C: drive like in C:\disks and double-click it to run it. Of course don't save the file on your Desktop nor in C:/Program Files (x86) nor C:/Program File silly you. This is also true if you try to run .bat batch files (a lot of old games want to start with batch files that you would run from DOSBox for example).

Reboot.

Now with this disabled, you'll find a lot of stuff suddenly working. Plus, if you're like me, you'll be happy to have gotten rid of the incessant haggling of the UAC warnings whenever you "do" something.

Of course, Microsoft doesn't recommend disabling UAC, blah, blah, blah... just make sure you are aware of what you are doing on your PC and where you go on the internet and have a good antivirus AND antimalware... I personally use BitDefender and Malware Bytes together, and yes I pay for them, it's worth every penny of my time by avoiding much aggravation with the pestilence from getting into my computer.

I guess this post ended up being much longer than I had anticipated, lol, sorry folks.

Great - thanks for letting me know. So, problem solved ... just keep Windows 7 alive

I haven't got back around to digging into a fix for Windows 10 (not sure I care about 8 and it might be the same thing) ... but I will

If need be, I still have a computer that has 98 on it. It works well on that one too. Has a ton of old games on it. Sometimes I think it works better than the new computer I have.

I'm using Win10 with the latest update(s) and have tried everything discussed in this forum post and the program(WizEdit) still gives me Runtime Error 70. Access denied.

I guess I want to know how to get back to Windows 7 so this will run. I have tried everything I can think of and/or everything listed in this series of posts and STILL can't get the program to run.

I find it amazing that:
1) it still runs at all
2) people are still using it

LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-19 AT 09:31 PM (Pacific)

I downloaded the latest WizEdit version 2.2c

I have LUA disabled.

I have Windows 10 Pro version 1909 64-bit.

I put it in a folder that's no more than 8 characters long ex: C:\WizEdit

I double-clicked the WizEdit.exe file to start it and IT WORKED !!!

Make sure you disable LUA the way I specified above.

Make sure the account on your computer has full admin rights.

Ok, can you clarify "worked". I have seen it fire up and thought I had solved it a few times, but when you get into using, like on the Spells screen, it throws an error.
