"The much anticipated Bane Item List ..."

... and associated files. Well, I finally got these files on my web site (on the Other Links page). I had planned to make a new page for "Wizardry information files", but took the lazy man's approach and modified the "Patches" page to include this info. If I ever get any more information together on the Wiz 7 Monster/NPC list I started, I'll put that up to - it's too "raw" to put up right now.

Dear Admin,

Sorry, but I'm new here... so all I'm rather curious about... is your web site's address

"Anyone ever find the Cuckoo's Call?"
Posted by Scary -ur on Jun-30-00 at 06:49 PM
RBrown's list is excellent, although I note that a few items have not been filled in (e.g., Cuckoo's Call is 62 00, Excaliber is 6C 00, Z-Bo is 70 00). Has anyone ever found the Cuckoo's Call in the game? (For those who lack the clue book, it is a musical instrument that casts mental attack.) I have never seen it, but I just edited it into a starting character, and found that it works NICELY. I wish I could legally find one (otherwise, temptation may cause me to "swap" it for the Sword of Striking in the second chest).

I've played and finished bane about 8 times and have never found the cuckoo's call, excalibur, or the zatoichi bo. I even stuffed around in the end temple just for fun for a few days and still didn't find them there.

Just started again and I am up to the zulu section. Originally my friend and I would keep playing to find out which classes were the best and then we would find we had mucked up by picking a non-faerie ninja so we would have to start over. We then ended up with an awesome team for WIZGOLD.

Well, having checked the item ranges on all of the chests in Bane, I've concluded that the Cuckoo's Call will not appear as a random chest item. Although neither Mark nor I have encountered Excalibur or the Z-Bo, despite extensive Bane experience, too many others have posted on the boards that they have received these items as random treasurers from encounters in the forest or temple. The cuckoo's call may also be available from a random encounter, but if so, it sounds like no one has ever been so lucky.

Got Excaliber once after a fight with the Tyranosaurus (sp?) in the forest. Lost four characters, so I didn't keep it. Never saw Z-Bo or Cuckoo's Call, but suspect that origin for them too.
Played Bane a lot then, as was "between jobs." Must have gone through about 10 times. Some of these were with a friend, where we'd alternate playing, taking notes and drawing maps. Bane was the most fun, IMHO.

Rbrown's list also does not contain the code for the Faetie cap, which is also a very rare to find item, also i have tried your 4 digit code for the z-bo and the excaliber and they work fine, but as items retain the attributes of the item replaced. Meaning : When i switched my skull dagger to an excaliber i got it but my excaliber was now a one handed weapon and could be holded on the secondary hand. It still delivered the excaliber damage though...Same happened when i switched my one-handed cat o' nine tails to a Z-bo...
so could anyone post the exact codes for these 3 items? Excaliber, Zatoichi Bo and Faerie cap

Thanx...

You need to replace all 8 bytes (or 10?) to get the weapon with the correct picture and armor/regen levels. The damage levels are kept in the item database, so you can get Excaliber damage from a knife-appearing object.

The list was built up by getting an item, writing the positions of the new items on a piece of paper, saving the game, exiting, then running the extracter program to pull out the new items and typing in the name. Some items got missed or mis-identified. It looks like I never got the cap in Wiz 6.

"The Book of Poetry"
Posted by Scary on Jul-12-00 at 05:39 PM
While playing around with the Bane Item list, I did manage to learn one more interesting fact: the Book of Poetry, which has long been thought to be useless ("Identify" reveals that it has a special power, but no one can invoke it, and you cannot "use" it anywhere), appears to be intended to boost intelligence. At least, when I copied its identifier (22 01) onto an equipable item, I could "equip" it and then "invoke" it, whereupon the character's intelligence went up a point. I wonder if they maybe just didn't code the Book properly. Under the circumstances, I also wonder, what is the ethical response: if the Book was SUPPOSED to have a certain effect, but a correctable bug prevents that effect, isn't one justified in fixing that bug? Of course, I haven't seen the full 8 bytes for the Book of Poetry, since I currently don't have a saved game in which my party has acquired one. If the "charges" byte on the actual Book of Poetry is "00" (i.e., unlimitted), I would have to question my conclusion that the Book of Poetry was intended to have this effect--I doubt the designers intended it to be used to give all characters a 20 intelligence. (Yes, intelligence will go that high in Bane if you've got the items to increment it.)

Ah, but this is something that cannot be exploited UNTIL it is "fixed." As it currently stands, you cannot do anything with the Book of Poetry, although my characters once tried "using" it on the Amazulu Queen to see if she was a romantic. (Apparently, she is not.)

Since you posted this message have you been able to acquire the book of poetry or a savegame that has the book of poetry?
If no, would you want a savegame that contains the book of poetry?

Let me know!

When I haven't been overwhelmed with work, I've been researching other aspects of Bane, and haven't taken a current party up to the Temple of Ramm. If you'd like to e-mail me a savegame with the book of poetry, I'll take a look at it and let you know what I see. (c:

From the main site, follow:
Other Links->Patches and Informative Wizardry® files

There are two links there, don't know which one you want.

"error : missing 1 bytes in Zip file (attempting to process anyway)."

and when i hit OK i get this error:
"Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again."

has anyone else got this error?

This looks to be another casualty of when I switched web hosts a couple months ago (I imagine I copied this one down or up using the wrong protocol ...) I will have to check when I get home to see if I have a good copy.

I "use" the Book. I use a "male" and use it against a Female
NPC. It seems to freeze them. I have used it against Saeron, Kuwali, The Amazulu Queen and Mai-Lai. Always afraid to use it against Rebecca. I might though. The female NPC's seem to freeze
on the screen. I have not 'noticed' improvement on the items offered yet, which is the reason I have tried this item in the first place. I next will work on the Lynx Ring. Use it by a Female to a Male NPC and see if I get a similar affect. Scary your scary sometimes. Between you LLeveram, and RBrown I just want about 2 weeks alone with your notes. I would bring mine. What tools (other than a brain) do I need to "play" around with the Bane data files, like items? I don't even think my sisters PC has a Basic compiler installed. If so I have'nt found it yet.
Appreciate the info. I am trying an all Faerie party now. 3 males
and 3 females. Carrying Capacity and LACK of armor/weapons is tricky indeed. But it is INTERESTING. I tend to use a lot of Hand/feet, Bushido's, my 1 little lonely Muramasa Blade, A rather
very HEAVY Maenads Lance and my trusty Demons Tongue's. Oh well
might as well play with my Rammbus Staff some more. By the way
the Staff of Aram is a very good weapon. An extended weapon with
Melee capability. I like it.

I still have the GWBASIC.EXE and the program files around somewhere. It was a primitive DOS program and difficult to use properly, so I missed some items and mislabeled others.

I just read the other posts and found the complete ascii list. I'm glad someone has done something with it !
I also downloaded BaneEdit and BaneItem, maybe I can load Wiz 6 on my new Windows ME machine and run a team.
