This is the First Wizardry Game that I Have played and let me tell you THIS IS ONE GREAT GAME. I really enjoy the first person perspective (ala Might & Magic) and wish that other game developers would take a hint, to me 3rd Person really sucks sometimes. It's a shame that there won't be a Wizardry 9 because I'am sure that Sir-Tech would turn a profit. Well I just want to say that I'am a new CONVERT and will end up playing Wiz 8 over and over with many different parties while I wait for M&M 9 and Neverwinter Nights to come out. Played Pool of Radiance , it was ok but nothing like Wiz 8

I am also a fan of 1st person games, do you really think Might & Magic 9 will be all that good? I suppose they couldn't do worse than the last two games in the series.

Ditto on waiting for Neverwinter Nights..

Demise is another 1st person rpg that I have played over 600 hours on. The game is no longer supported though, and because of that I cannot recommend the game to you.

Isn't any game into which you've sunk 600 hours, worth a recommendation on that basis ALONE? Yes, it has some bugs, but clearly it hasn't stopped you.

I actually prefer both BotCF and CotDS...the DOS versions. Yes, the graphics is flat and 2-D, but the game is more responsive and crisper to play. Big combats in Wiz8 are grindingly slow...over by the mountain wilderness, the second time I went over there, I ran into a SWARM of fights. First fight was a queen ant, 2 groups of soldier ants, a group of tanto wasps, and a group of swarming wasps...probably about 30 monsters all told. The first round probably took 5 minutes; I cast a good-sized fireball to clear out the ants so the fight itself would take less than an hour.

(Gods, was that ugly...I'd say I had 12-15 fights from the time I approached the lake at the base of the hill, to the time I reached the top of the hill. Took about 3 hours...end one fight, look back up the hill, here comes another pack of wasps...mind you, it ended up being worth a TON of xp's and skill improvements.)

As long as no one dies - I love it when I get into tons of fights like that. I love all the extra XP and skill improvements and eventually more levels! The more fights the better, I say.

So - as my Valkryie is fond of saying "More food for the worms!"

Hmm... Well, tell u what. Speaking as a relatively long time Wizfan, WizGold(or Wiz7) along with Wiz6 for me greatly lacked the spirit of the series, only with Wiz8 has it been brought back and even improved upon IMHO. Wiz8 is awesome. Go ahead and go for Wiz Gold as well if you'd like but I doubt you'll find it as decent as W8.

Also, at least hold out some hope for the series to not be scrapped. You're new to the series right? But yet you found an awesome game and wish that other CRPG designers would take a hint from Wiz8. It'd be more than ironic if, now that the Wiz series finally has gotten back on track, that the decision to truly kill the series is actually carried out and not rethought. I dont believe that Sirtech wouldn't make sufficient profit off of Wiz9, I think they'd do excellently if they would just stick to their guns and keep things real. What they've done with Wiz8 is awesome and if they could just be patient and willing to work hard on Wiz9 as they did for 8, and remained persistent, I think they'd find a fanbase that's truly worth something and that their effort to keep the series alive would indeed pay off esp in the medium to long run.

Wiz 8 has been selling pretty well from what I understand, which shouldnt be surprising since a good game with adequate exposure and word of mouth will inevitably end up selling itself. I'm betting, at least hoping very, very much, that the series is kept alive...

Demise was/is a very decent game, you cannot save, and reload, (well, not as in other games) instead you must take the aging, the stat loss, and the destruction of equipment that often comes with death.

The problem, for me, was the bugs that were never fixed, and the lack of support, as Artifact Entertainment has totally forgotten about the game. The game was going open source, but as David Allen has left Artifact I doubt anything will be done. Only good news about Demise is you can still buy it, and the Demise page is still up.

As for Wizardry 8, best bug free game I have ever played, as well as getting my vote for game of the year. I hope, as we all do, that I can spend more time in Sir Tech's world.

*Prays for Wizardry 9*

8. "careful w/ demise"
I, too, am a demise fan-- to the point of playing all the freeware/beta versions of it. Prob w/ demise is that it isn't programmed all that well, and beware if you install the patches. You have to follow the instructions to the t, so to speak; what's more, you have to be ready to reinstall windows if everything isn't done correctly. Other than that, it's an awesome game. Lots, nearly too much, going on w/ char development. Wonderful game tho.

Does anyone know where you can buy the original series of games? I remember playing them many moons ago, but heard they do not run well on current machines.

I think some of them had anti-piracy factors as well, such as booting from the disk, etc, that might cause issues now.

I just miss ol' Wiz 1.

The Ultimate Wizardry Archives, which contains all seven original wizardry games (including BOTH the original Wiz7 and Gold version) is still up for sale at Chips&Bits for about $10. I ordered it last week (having been really bitten by the wizardry bug again and also having (stupidly) let my wife convince me to throw out all those boxes and boxes of old 'worthless' floppies of classic games *SIGH*). It got here in like two days.....mmmmmm......wizardry.......

One thing about Wiz Gold: in my opinion, it's best to play Wiz VII, not Wiz Gold. In my true opinion, it's best to play Wiz VI, if you're choosing. Wiz Gold is very sluggish. I have tried it on a p75, 16 megs ram, s3; also on a p3 733, 128 m Ram, tnt 2. same thing either way. easier to spend fifty bucks on a p75 nowadays, and qemm for mem manager to make it run (or tinker w/ dos mem manager)

I ran Wiz 7 on my 286/10Mhz (1MB RAM) without a problem back in the day... If your PC is underpowered, go for wiz7, if you're running windows9x, you should just go with GOLD (IMO)

I put some pc specs in my message to suggest that, at the time when wiz gold came out, wiz vii classic ran better than wiz gold did. didn't mean to offend or get in an argument, and i have no intention of it. If wiz gold works for you, that's awesome, but in my experience, wiz vii classic ran better; that was back in 1996 tho.
Best of luck

You ran wiz VII on a 286???? I have a great deal of trouble believing that.

14. "i can't believe that..."
This is that last message that I'll post on this, btw. No point in other ppl thinking that they might find something new and interesting, and then find ppl talking about how they ran an age old game.

To get this straight. You ran Wizardry VII (Seven) on a 286 w/ one M ram. Maybe I just started playing them way too late, but I really can't see how that could happen. For example, Dungeon master would run on 286, but the even the graphics for wiz vii, and what they require to run were not available at the time that a 286 was a decent computer. What sort of 286 did you have, for goodness sake? That's like running windows xp on a p75.

I just love all the posts about Wizardry being like might and magic. Bane was years before the M&M series and I always felt like it they were a passable knock off of the masterfull originals.
