1. "I don't think so"
I think that is a part of the engine, and not something any of the in game controls (or system/card settings) can change or address.

no one has yet found a way to do so.
Granted, it doesn't make much of a differnce in gameplay, since it is far, and the enemies don't move fast enough for it.
Wiz 8 was designed for less than stellar graphics cards, not your GeForce 4 TI 4600 or ATI Radeon 9700

3. "No change in gameplay..."
... I agree with that, but the limited display distance is the most annoying thing in Wiz8. In dungeons etc. that's no problem at all, but seeing mountains pop out of the fog really looks dated (the ego-shooters from the time that Wiz8 was released already had unlimited display distance). It may be okay, when the party is walking on the various roads, but when you stand on the outlook at the shipcrash - site at the monastery for example and you look left and right, the effect is really weird!

Gameplay won't change (it's allready perfect, so it can't get better ), but it would be an immense optical improvement.
Even if it's part of the engine the display distance is probably some #define in a header file... which could be changed by the developers to release a patch.

Turn off sky mesh that kills the effect you are mentioning. At least I think thats what you are talking about.
