""Best Weapons""
I read on this board a lot of hype about best weapons and how to get them. The *Light* Sword, Cane of Corpus, Excalibur, and the Muramasa Blade are probably considered the best weapons under the definition of "best" that is commonly used here. Best seems to equate with highest damage rating according to most posters.

Yes the above weapons do have the highest damage ratings but are they the best ?

They are all short range which limits there usefullness in general play.

I consider some of the better Staffs and Polearms to be better bets in general play.

Most monsters can only perform their fanciest tricks at close range so better not to get up close.

Has anyone ever tried the the Eagle Eye Bow with Peacemaker arrows ? With a good ranger 60 damage per arrow. It is awesome. The Staff of Doom and Zaroichi Bo are also fantastic with damage ratings only surpased by the LS, CoC, and Exc and they are extended.

Although I must admit the Cane of Corpus with its Critical and KO factors as well as damage is awesome too. Though it is too specific in its requirements and too variable in the chances to obtain it to plan a party around in my view. In saying this I do not believe in reloads to obtain the best treasure. Life doesn't work that way and to reload to get a better deal makes game play quite unchallenging.

1. "Don't forget the Spears"
(no, not Britney, though it woudl have been funny if they included such a weapon ... -50 to intelligence )

Dread Spear adn Spear of Death are not half bad either. Yes, you are right, there are many definitions of "best". It was the same with Wiz 7, always the "what is best" question.

The answer really comes down to "best" for your party, character in question, style of play ...

THough you tend to stay at arms (or poles) length, many others find that closing in quick causes many spellcasters to forego their (often deadly) spells and join in the fray.

Peacemaker arrows? <drool> where pray tell does one find those? Ferro has a good supply but I've seen no arrows/bolts better than the lightning bolts.
Is there a nother shop before I get to the last map (the peak) for me to buy some goodies???

3. "No shop..."
between here and cosmic circle

But on ascension peak you can find lots of ammunition so no need to weigh your Chars down with ammo. You even can find a couple of peacemakers there.

Have fun at the last stage of this great game. There are some surprises (story & monsters) left, be assured!

4. "Good weapons"
As was said before, Dread Spear, and Fire Spear are both good. It's probably a good idea to up the polearm and/or mace and flail skills because the spears and the vampire chain are good extended range weapons. I found out, eventually, that it was better to have extended weapons in the secondary slot(s) because I ended up with a Samurai who was better at bows than he was at swords. Also, you will encounter a fair amount of enemies who will sit at extended range and whack you with their long arms or use magic/distance attacks on you. It's good to be able to hit them with a solid shot from a spear than to fire arrows that miss / do nothing when they hit. Another good reason is that, depending on your party formation, those at the front cannot help the puny magic users when they get attacked from the rear.
/me curses the 'attacks from behind'
Using the melee formation (fighters with extended range weapons on the flanks, magic users etc in the middle) enables you to attack front and rear with the same efficiency.

5. "Melee formation..."
...is very useful, but I have to disagree with the statement that bows do no damage. Late in the game my three archers (bard, fighter & lord) had a lot of shots and were doing critical hits very often. Of course it depends on the weapon & ammo. The seige arbelast with lightning bolts is very good.

6. "RE: Melee formation..."
I preferred using the spells and instruments/gadgets for the distance attacks (and dracon breath), although I did have a ranger (who got a disappointingly low number of criticals ) He ended up using the Eagle Eye Bow (+40% damage) and a spear of some kind, giving him good ranged and close damage abilities.

Uhm...
Triple Shot Crossbow w/ Lightning Bolts? When you shoot 8+ rounds a turn, the enemies are in trouble. Imagine several characters equipped with these... ouch.

And Diamond Eyes? Because it's one-handed, unlike some of the good swords, it leaves room for another implement of destruction. Ivory Blade and Excalibur are disappointments (IMO), although I haven't gotten the Light Sword yet and don't feel like reloading hundreds of times to get it.

9. "Secondary weapon"
Not to forget that the "diamond eyes" is a secondary weapon! The best that I've found on my first play. Though it wasn't that useful, for my Lord was quite slow, so that my Fighter, two Monks and he himself with his primary weapon usually already had dispatched moist of the monsters foolish enough to come into melee range (or couldn't run away fast enough...).

Diamondeyes is better than a shield after lev 20 or so. nothing lives in melee range long enuff to make shield skill worth anything. Equip the primary hand with The Mauler and watch the chunks fly.

Yep, that's what my fighter is using now, The Mauler and Diamond Eyes. If I go through the game a third time, I'd have a Lord use this combo and take advantage of the Dual Weapons bonus.

It's funny though, Diamond Eyes seems like the best secondary weapon in the game. It's funny to duel wield it

I played the game twice and found "The Avenger" on the same spot.In the Sea Caves you climb up using the grapling hook. In the first passage to the left is a chest. Found "The Avenger" there. It is a great weapon. Huge damage and 30% K.O., if i remember. Unfortunately only, it is two-handed.
