No trick to it. There is no special sequence that will yield better results. Put 3 points into lockpicking every level, and bump up your intelligence, senses , and dexterity. A thieves buckler (a +5 or +10 to locks and traps) also helps. But mostly, practice, practice, practice. I sat for about 20 minutes trying to open a 5 lock chest just clicking away, and my locks and traps skill went up. It's really like any other skill in the game: use it, and you get better.

I have seen locks & traps go up while picking, picking, picking.

And I have seen it NOT go up after 30 minutes of picking. I was locked inside a Northern Wilderness dungeon room with no way out. I finally had to go back 2 savegames to escape. Always carry sufficient knockpicks or learn the spell.

in other skills too. Usually it is when they are low (like under 10-12) ... once they make that mark, they seem to go up through use (more often). Also, I don't know how long I wasted on my fighter with the "lock picking cap" (poseur's cap?), trying for a skill increase. The skill was closed, so never got an increase

You know, I had the same thing happen with my dracon samurai. I used Myles and later, Madras to pick locks, etc., but when both were gone from the party, I couldn't get my samurai to increase his lockpicking skill. I started out in Wiz 6 with him as my thief, and I upgraded him to a samurai in Wiz 7, but in Wiz 8, he never developed any thief skills.

The only thing you can do is to use Knock-Knock and plunk the Poseur's cap on someone to get the remaining tumblers opened.

As an aside, my samurai never amounted to much as a fighter either -- he was far better in Wiz 7.

something that i have noticed is that you should have 10 skill-points for each tumbler... okay, let's say you find a 3 tumbler lock, you prolly need to have 30 points in the skill to open it (not always the first time, either ).... same with a 6 tumbler lock - you need at least 60 skill points.

My Bard has managed a 6 tumbler lock without use of picks.
Think it was in the first retro-dungeon. I think her picking
skill was around 50 at the time. She is a very pleasant surprise
in Wiz 8. Not only are her music skills invaluable, but she
is an wonder at picking locks and pockets! Most surprising
is how often she invariably spots items while searching -
"Presents for me!". Who needs a Ranger?!
