"Party Construction ideas ???"
I'm on my 3rd start so far in Wiz8. I spent the first two times getting parties up to ~ 14th level, and then deciding to tweak my party design and start again. I'm very curious to find what works for others and why.

So here's mine:
all magic from gadgeteer, bard, and valkyrie's divine magic. slightly stronger in melee with good distance backup.

NPC's - choosen primarily because they aren't afraid of going to almost any place.(val dislikes Banyin)

- Val Dominae (valk) (In hindsight I might have switched her to priest on her first level up!)
- Android (monk) (I especially like the irony of having a savant guard as a character, and he wields the Mind Blast Rod particularly well)

PC's:
Spellcasters: Magic is fun, but the resting gets old, and I found that as I was hitting 14th level a hell of a lot of creatures are very immune and my spellcasters would get fried by one nasty spell or distance attacker. The only spells that become indispensable(magic screen, armour, x-ray, etc.) can almost all be found thorough instruments and gadgets. The bummer is, you miss out on Enchanted blade (though it is easy to stock up on scrolls).
The advantages of the gadgeteer/bard combo? My 'spellcasters' have twice the hitpoints, and are much better fighters. My gadgeteer kicks butt with her omnigun, already averaging 30 dmg/rnd at 10th level. Add in the bonus of merging the 3x crossbow for my ranger, and having a superb lock/trap expert(gad), and awesome pickpocketeer(bard), and you might see why I opted for this combination. Plus, they are both female with lockets of endurance. If they go unconcious in combat from stamina loss, they only spend one round unconcious, then can cast another spell!
Hobbit Gadgeteer (fem)
Hobbit Bard (fem)

Melee:
Felpurr Samurai (m) - dishes out awesome damage, and I dig samurai flicks...a must have. right now uses the Beserker Sword
Lizardman Fighter (m) - Big dumb and nasty. Has the tendency towards going insane and killing 3 party members in a round, but is endearing non the less. Also good on ranged with his blunderbuss.
Faerie Ninja (m) - a shameless bid to use the Canus Corpus. Plus, I really dig having a samurai, ninja, and monk in my party since, like I said, I dig samurai flicks and martial arts in general.

Distance:
Gadgeteer - kicks butt with her omnigun. I can't rave enough about the gadgeteer. They are fun to have in a party and a decent all around class.
Human Ranger - Middle earth influence...had to do it. With the x3 crossbow he often pulls my bacon out of the fire against other distance attackers and spellcasters, plus I like the convenience of him searching automatically.

If Val were a priest that would give 3 chars with heal-all, plus they would all be good fighters. Priests are definetly better fighters and hit point wise, and with my ninja, monk, samurai, fighter melee is pretty well covered. I would like to have some of the priest spells as a backup in hard fights... Still, with that skimpy outfit I have trouble seeing her as anything but a valkyrie.

Since later in the game magicians seem to be more of a liability than an asset(unless you like reloading games alot), for me this creates a very robust, fun party.

1. "RE: Party Construction ideas ???"
Since you are interested, this is my favorite party:

Dracon lord- uses fang and diamond eyes, triple shot for range
Mook Samurai- Giant sword, bow for range
Rawulf Ranger- Dread spear, eagle eye bow
Gnome Gadgeteer- Flame staff, omni gun
Elven Bard- staff of doom, n/a
monk or rogue- either fills the last spot nicely. monks get the pionic spells which i don't have axcess to otherwise and rogues can use the bloodlust/thieves dagger.

I don't use rpc's any more since they take valuable exp and they they have to be dismissed in certain zones. RFS excluded.

I have no casters, which means less liablity since all my characters are hardy hitpoint wise and i have acess to all spell classes, although much later. My group starts a little weak and dependant on potions in the beginning but towards the middle they are powerful and at the end utterly unstoppable.

For the record i have never found an excaliber, light sword, light shield, masamura blade of all my times through, but i've made do just fine with the placed weapons.

I hope someone found this interesting. I enjoy reading others thoughts on strong parties, so tell us what you think.

My first time through, I had (who cares much about races?):

Fighter
Samurai (using very little magic)
Rogue
Ranger
Psionic
Bishop (Mage and Priest spellbooks)

My second time around, I realized that Psionics are waste. So now I have:

Fighter
Samurai
Lord
Bard
Gadgeteer
Alchemist
Vi and RFS, whenever possible

This isn't the BEST party I know, but it's interesting. I decided to use an Alchemist because they make money SO easy to get in this game. I use the latest patch, so Pickpocketing is basically worthless, and my Rogue, even with Criticals and Stealth, was never as good as my Fighter. I have a Samurai for a few of the Mage spells that are decent (like Enchanted Blade), and my Lord to use -HP items and for backup (like when the Bard and Gadgeteer run out of Stamina). Doing it over, I'd probably scrap the Lord for another Fighter. I might change the Gadgeteer to a Ranger near the end of the game, just so she can use the Giant Sword. And a Bishop, concentrating in all but Psionic would probably be a better choice than an Alchemist (Bishops are, without question, better than any pure magic-user class... there is no room for comparison).

I think using NPCs is a good idea. If you think of them (Vi and RFS, the rest are trash) as permanent party members (except for a couple of areas, big deal), then they're good to have. Vi and RFS both help to beef up the front line, so I have 5 frontline fighters guarding my more long-range and magical characters.

I'm still not sure about hybrid characters... They're simply spread too thin, but the game would be a quite boring with a troupe of fighters and bishops.

Have never tried Ninjas, although I was disappointed with both Rangers and Rogues (by the end). Bards and Gadgeteers go well together and are, overall, better than spellcasters (except maybe Bishop), IMO.

3 fighters, Lizardman, Dracon, Mook
1 ranger - Mook
1 Bard - Hobbitt (locks and stealing)
1 Bishop - Elf - specialise in Psionics and Wizardry, Divinity will come with disciplined magical healing. ALchemy - who cares -if it turns you on your Ranger can go that way.

Recruit Vi and RFS 81

Give the fighters polearms (dread spears ultimately) and bows/cross bows, the Mook fighter a sling and the Giant sword.
The ranger the giant sword/bow cross bow.

The bard a sling and a quarter staff/bo (flame staff ultimately)

Train Vi in divinity and polearms/bows, RFS 81 in bo's for the Staff of Doom (guaranteed find)

The Bishop a staff to train for when he becomes a monk and can use the Zatoichi Bo (another of the few awesome weapons that is a guaranteed find).

This party just kicks arse. I entered Rapax Rift at level 13/14 killed everyone in sight met with Ferro gave them the good gear/ammo and now nothing stands in the way, all characters a minimum of level 20.

Such a line up might not turn everyone on, but believe me it gets the job done - very effectively.

I play 3rd party now.
First pary consists of Hum M SAMURAi,Hob M Gadgeteer,Elf F MAGE,Dw M PRIEST,Hum F VALKYRIE,Hum F MONk. At the ending,Party level are 23Level. I think Gadgetter is most recommended in this party.
Second party consists of Dracon M Fig, Hum F Bard, Hum F Valkyrie,Dwa M Priest, Farie F mage,Gnome M Alchemist. This party is 20 level at the Ending. Alchemist is most recommended because making potion makes money gold.
Third pary is Mook M fig, Hob F Bard,Hum M Ranger,Dwa M Priest,Elf F Mage, Farie F Psionic. This party is now 13 level in the Baijin Sharrow. I think both Psionic and Ranger are insufficient or somthing to be desired.

My first party was:
Samurai
Lord
Ninja
Gadgy
Mage --> bishop when maxed
priest --> bishop at level 4

This party was very powerful, however, the lord was changed to a fighter because the priest spell book wasn't worth the leveling or performace hit. And I found that it was very frustrating not being able to use any of the bard's instruments and waiting an extra 4 levels for my bishop to be able to gain 7th level spells in Mage/Psionics/Alchemy.

The current party that I'm running through on expert in iron man mode is:
Samurai
Monk
Ranger
Gadgy
Bard
Bishop

I figure that it's a little light on pure magic, however the gadgy and bard make up for that, while providing some good melee help when needed. My bard will eventually become a fighter at level 19. I'm hoping that one pure caster will be enough. I plan on picking up Vi and the RFS. Vi will be a backup healer, who will get converted to a fighter as soon as she gets a few good healing spells.

Here's my two cents...

My party is made up entirely of humans and hobbits. The reason for this is that humans and hobbits have, by a fair margin, the highest attribute ratings. In my first game I had a lizardman fighter, and either of my human fighters from my second game had higher scores in every single attribute, including strength, by about level 12.
My party...
Toll Smithson - Human fighter
Olga Smithson - Human fighter
Leeph Asgardian - Human Valkrie
Rosemary Basilberry - Hobbit Ranger
Killjoy Mundare - Human Bishop
Fitzpatrick Dandelions - Hobbit Rogue

The only thing I would change in hindsight is having a bard instead of a rogue.

7. "RE: Party Construction ideas ???"
I've played Wizardry since the days of the Proving Grounds and until now I always had a mage and rogue until Bane of the Cosmic Forge. Once I found the Prometheus Horn (unlimited fireball? Heck yes!), I've had bards ever since. Since Crusaders my party ine up has been consistent... until now. First, some explaining. I've always liked the elite classes, so bye-bye fighter. Why have a lord when a valkyrie raises faster? For psionics I'd use a monk, and for alchemy a ninja. Rangers (before Wiz 8) were useless. Priests were okay, but bishops were better. In Wiz 7 there was no better feeling than walking into an encounter and being able to cast Asphyxiation (samuri), 2 Nuclear Blasts (bard and mage), Death Wish (bishop) and Word of Death (valkyrie. My faerie ninja had the CoC (death in a small package). With the changes to some classes, and the addition of the Gadgeteer, here is the party that I ENJOY most (not necessarily the best, but what I like).

Dracon or dwarf valkyrie- Cheat death? Hell yea! Plus decent
spellcaster and good front line fighter.
Faerie ninja- I had ninjas before, but not always faerie until I beat Bliendmies in the Rattkin tree to get the CoC. Even though I was 18th lvl, I switched over my mage to a ninja right then and there. Been useing them ever since. Poison, paralyze, instant kill. I dance to this beat.
Mook or elf ranger- before Wiz 8 this would have automatically been my felpurr samurai, but with auto search and better ranged weapons they have become among my favorite classes.
Gnome or hobbit bard- Come on, they cast spells with music, lockpick, pickpocket, are great with a double/triple shot crossbow, have fairly decent bard only armor/items, and if they're female, the stamina +1 from necklaces and other items can't be beat. Good fighters in a pinch with decent hitpoints. Always welcome around my campfire. .
Gnome, faerie, elf or dwarf bishop- With the inclusion of learning all spells fom all classes the bishop has bumped up to the ultimate spellcaster IMHO. No other need apply.
Mook or gnome gadgeteer- When I first read the preview for this class i thought great, a class that can MacGyver anything. Not quite what I thought, but an 11th lvl Omnigun is hard to beat, plus she gets access to spell like effects that I find helpful, but wouldn't waste a spell slot on for my bishop.

The only changes that I will make to this line for variety's sake is to try a fighter (lizardman) or a priest (one spell class only). I do have a party saved on a disk that includes 4 faeries (mage, bishop, ninja and monk), a human fighter and felpurr bard and another that includes my classic line up of valkyrie, samurai, ninja, bard, bishop and mage. I'm ready to ROCK!
