This version (the .0a Alpha version) is only intended as a preliminary release - the product is far from "done". I wanted to get this workable version out, so people could see and comment on what I have done so far. The design is pretty much done, though I still have some pieces of the implementation to work out:1. Speed is an issue (though not a problem - I know how to fix it, just haven't done so yet) You can click on the 'Previous' and 'Next' buttons faster than the display can keep up with you.2. A lot of cosmetics - like the title bar of the application, placement of some buttons, having pop-up dialog windows stay where you re-positioned them the next time they pop-up, ... 3. The entire "edit and save" routine - right now you can change anything you want, but no changes are saved (to the database or to your Wizardry(r) files.KNOWN ISSUES:1. The program may crash under win '98 - or that may just be my test system2. If you get the error "failed to create empty document" - I've addressed that. Version .0c should fix that right up.GETTING STARTEDAfter running the self-extracting executable (or unzipping the .zip file) all the files you need to run the program should be in:C:\Program Files\Software Specialties\Wiz7NPCYou should also have a new entry in your start bar, under:Programs->Wiz7NPC->Wiz7NPC- use that to run the programThe first time you run the program, it will want to do some configuration. It will ask you for two things: the database and where you have Wizardry(r) Gold located. The first prompt, for the database, should popup with the correct entry - WIZINFO.mdb. If it doesn't then navigate to it and select it.The second prompt asks you to navigate to your Wizardry(r) Gold directory and then press 'Cancel'. This is so you can play the sound files for each NPC/Monster (and eventually to know where to make the updates - but that is a ways down the road).Other than that, hopefully things are pretty self-evident, as to how to navigate, find a particular NPC, see what piece of information you are interested in, ... GETTING MORE INFOWhen you see additional icons or buttons, click on them - they should do something. Like the treasure icons (which I made all by myself :-)) and speaker icon, the ">>" and "<<" buttons (with the exception of the one next to "Picture ID" - which was disabled). Also, the grayed out areas don't necessarily mean you can't change the value, just that you do so via another pop-up (usually "dice") window - click on either gray box next to "Hit Point Range" and you'll see what I mean.WHAT I AM INTERESTED INMostly, what you think (keeping in mind this is a preliminary release). A few of the field labelslike:"Chance to Miss""Wandering Byte""Appears With/Calls for help"Are my best guess as to what that piece of information does or a lame description thereof, like Wandering Byte, which is a byte that only applies to Wandering NPCs - those that always roam (like Mick the Pick) or were fixed then roam (like King Ulgar), as far as I could tell :-) For many of the fields, I did not really test what they did, I simply extrapolated a name from some analysis of the values (as in the above case). For instance, all NPCs/Monsters that can cast spells have a byte set to various values that all other NPCs have set to zero ... after a little further ananlysis, this became labeled "Spell Attack Percent". You get the picture.Sorry, I digress ... what I am interested in ...Feedback. Do things make sense (as described above). Once things get a bit more finalized, I will provide as much (or hopefully as little :-)) documentation is necessary to make this a useful utility. *fingers crossed* It will be like Wiz7item and require no documentation ...
