"CoDS difficulty"
Maybe it was just because I was only 12 when I first got Wiz 7, or that I was only allowed to play it 30-45 minutes at a time maybe 3 times a week, but I found Wiz 7 so hard. I loved it!

I just can't imagine having any chance of beating the game (getting to the dark savant) without the help of the internet.

Is there anyone here who beat the game without cheating or looking anywhere other than the manual? (The manual to this day is one of my favorite game user manuals!)

I think I called the support line for the funhouse puzzle. Other than that, I think I did it without "cheating".

When WizGold came out, I thought it was Wiz 8, and was excited to import my characters .... then found out it was just Wiz 7 for Windows. Also, to my dismay, I found that all my saved games were lost. So, in prep for Wiz 8 (that was rumored at that time), I didn't feel like spending months to beat the game again ... so cheated like nobody's business ... creating my own editor ... which took many more months than playing would have

I spend more than two years on my first run of Wiz 7. I had a lot of save games, graph paper, and notebooks full of info.

I never called the help line, so I did all my self. What an adventure.

Same here, never called the help line, there was no info, no internet... W7 took an awful long time to finish under those circumstances.

But my biggest disappointment was that the game was in EGA graphics while most other major release games of that time were in VGA.

Are you sure? I know W7 supported EGA graphics, but it was widely lauded for playing in VGA 8 bit as well. That is how I played it. The graphics and sound was glorious at the time.

My mistake, it was Bane of the Cosmic Forge that was in EGA, but I still remember vividly getting BCF on the first day it was on the store shelves and was very disappointed about that. And I played Wiz 6 without any help either, actually I finished Wiz 6 after I finished Wiz 7.

I respect all of you who played this without any help! Truly an amazing accomplishment!

I remember playing with a friend at there house and being stuck so much!

In my own game, when I was finally able to get into New City, and out towards the river trolley, I couldn't get any further.

I accidentally angered the munk there, killed him, and then couldn't beat his ghost, and didn't understand that I could use the trolley key on his person to get across the river.

I loved every second of it though. Felt like there was danger around every corner.

Coins.

I was sunk until I found a BB on Prodigy (or some such service). Not much info there but it got me through a sticky spot.

When I first played, I made the unlucky decision to kill T'Shober because I got tired of the interaction with him, figuring that swimming across would just be easier/faster. So of course, I had to battle him everytime to cross the river. Typically, only my Ninja would survive, and well before I finished even half the game, my Ninja was over level 100 from the battles with Tshober's Ghost.

Now, I did finish most of the game with my party (led by a very high level ninja), but to be fair, I never figured out how to get the boat. Stamina potions and spells were how I mapped the ocean, and found the islands (again, usually only my Ninja made it)... and I seem to recall that he always used nunchaku as weapons and was KOing everything he hit, all the time.

Admittedly, this is decades ago, and my memory is less than perfect now, but that's how I recall it. And I never called a help desk, nor did I ever cheat.

This is what happened to me. Although I didn't get tired of him, I accidentally angered him while trying diplomacy on him. His Ghost would wipe the floor with my party, and I got real tired of getting owned all over New City, etc. If I would have had more time to play, I know I would eventually have figured it out.

That said, your description of how you just powered through a lot of stuff is awesome. It must have been a lot of work to get all the stamina potions you needed to swim out on the sea to the island, and all.

Thanks for sharing!

I didn't finish the game on my own. In the end I ordered the official guide and used it too much. I could blame several things, English being not my native tongue or CoDS being my first puzzle game. But I guess I'm just better at choosing the best answer amongst many possible answers (like in developing the characters or making tactical decisions) than in finding the only correct answer.
