Bwaaaaaahh ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!

ahem...

Sorry, I'm expirencing a attack of cable modem euphoria.

The long arm of technology has finally reached out to this podunk town I live in.

Think I'll download a 20 MB file and just delete it for fun.

The internet, broadband, computers ... all just fads, they will go away sooner or later

(Yes, I suffer from HSIAE - High Speed Internet Access Envy)

Drat...I also suffer as well. In a few months I am moving to AZ and going from a 46.6 dialup down to a 28.8 dialup.

I desire cable so bad...

Congrats Marc. Just remember once you've tried it you can NEVER go back. If you ever have to move, one of the requirements of the place you buy will be high speed internet access.

4. "Staying Alive.... for sure :-)"
Yeah, THAT thought has crossed my mind already. After 12+ years of dial up (I remember the big jump up to 2400 baud. Or was that 1200?) and waiting the last three years for the cable service, I can't see going back.

This is fun.

Let's see: 1985 was 300. 1987 was 1200. 1989 was 2400. After 1991, it was coming along a notch every six months it seemed: 9600, 14.4, 28.8, and 33.6 -- stopped there for awhile.

The 300 bps Hayes SmartModem was as costly as an entire C64 setup in 1985 (first year for gaming and for being a two-computer house, and for going online to local BBS's). The IBM's wouldn't play games worth squat until after VGA came along in 1989 or so.

I have some 14.4 and 28.8 (or maybe 33.6) modems that still work. Who would want them?

Just remember, now that your connection is "Always On" you are now much more susceptible to hacking attacks from weirdos out there. A personal firewall would be a good idea.

Plus "The Man" can watch you more easily too. That's why I don't think I'll get digital cable for TV.

7. "Zone Alarm is nice...."
I run Ad-Aware as well.

Yeah, it is amazing how many hits I get in a 24 hour period. No less than 30 hits a day from machines around the world. Most of them are harmless in nature, but I can imagine a certian percentage of them are out to do evil for sure. Without the right software one would never know they even existed....

As for TV, I have both satellite and digital cable and I have thought many times about how easy it would be for them to track a users viewing habits. Though the invasion does not really bother me all that much, I think that the practice should be banned in much the same I feel that it should be illegal to place any "spy-ware" or any other "ware" on a users HD W/O their direct consent.

8. "Big brother is not soooo bad"
Of course, that comes from someone not worried about getting caught doing anything illegal ..... cause I am not. Now, if you were say, a terrorist, using the web trying to gather info on stadiums (see this CNN article - http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/07/03/homeland.fourth/index.html) and the govt can trace that, maybe you should be worried .... I am all for it.
