"My first impressions"
I am just nearing the end of the Snake Temple, so here is what it looks like to me:

good things
- lot of different racec and classes and abilities
- turn base combat similar to Might & Magic (just do not know why they call it here "phased" combat - just confused me at the beginning)
- some puzzles
- character development

neutral (neither good, nor bad)
- switches to "turn based combat" only when monster attacks. this renders bows rather useless (most of the time), on the other hand it avoids making bows too strong (like in Baldu's Gate, Might&Magic VI)
- everything costs a lot of money - on the other hand, it means that money are needed (in most other RPGs I ended up with a heap of useless money - in Baldu's Gate + datadisks I finished with about 300 000)

bad things
- missing Alt TAB
- everytime a character is chosen in shop - shopkeeper starts automatically to tell what the character did not finished yet for him(very irritating - button "check quests" would solve it)
- I could live without puzzles of this type: start elevetar, go back and jump on its top - this should be left to Quake and similar
- most of fights are rather easy
- why the hell resting (or waiting) is not available? - it is not necessary for replenishing hitpoints here, but it would enable to avoid night explorations (spells are always worse than daylight)
- the world seems rather "dead" (I miss cities in Might & Magic VI or Ultima 7, 8), dungeons are big, empty, cold looking stone passages - 3D is too realistic thing to enable imagination to cover it (as in older, graphically worse RPGs)
- some imbalances: e.g. in spells - Remove Poison is on 4th level (why so high?), which means that my characters doing the Temple are constanly poisoned (not achieving the spell level yet - well my mistake, I should study the spell list and try to get it before - but I did not know how necessary it will be)

On the whole it seems a good game and I spent already a lot of time on it. However it could be much better.

1. "RE: My first impressions"
I am playing the game for some time so that I think I can mark it.
- different races: yes, but many races do not mean a choice. In fact, you will choose between a pixie and an elf. The other races are much less advantageous.
- turn based combat: it makes a company a burden rather than an advantage. If you try to "pass", the game will flip between two members of your group most probably and it will not allow you to choose the needed character. That's why I am playing a solo character all the time.
- puzzles: let us note that all puzzles in the game are worthless in the sense that once the puzzle is solved, it ceases to exist. In all subsequent runs, you will select the correct solution automatically so that there are no puzzles any more. Was the game intended to be played only once?
- character development: any RPG contains character development.
- bows: yes, the bows are really useless in W&W.
- money: until you install a patch, the money are no problem at all due to bugs in the game. Check this forum or the Ironworks forum.
- alt-tab: okay. Many other games cannot be iconized or switched into a window, too. Nevertheless, the user should be told that he cannot switch to another application while the game is running.
- the "company": is not a company but a bunch of individuals that were forced to share the same roster for some unknown reason. They even do not share gold so that you must "poll" the gold whenever you want to buy something. They do not share quests so that you are forced to do the same quest with every character in your "company".
- fights: the game is unbalanced heavily. Either you get a buch of batmans that kills everyting in sight without being harmed or even hit, or you obtain a group of weaklings that will solve difficult problems again and again. Nothing in between.
- rests: see below.
- dead world: ?? - the graphics and scenes are the only plus of the game. The worlds of other games, for example MM7, are much deader. But the graphics isn't enough. It is only one of the pieces of a good game. The graphics alone cannot make a good game.
- Cure Poison: it is your fault. Period. The 4th level isn't high. Again check the forums what to do...

Let us note that W&W has a very special ability. 1.Everything "hack'n'slash" works - the monsters are nice, the graphics is excellent, many hack'n'slash like puzzles, "crushing damage", crazy dance when you try to pick an item from the ground (note that the crazy dance originates from battles. In the battles, too, you will be turned to some enemy against your will.), picking items by running through them, opening doors by going through them (you cannot decide when you want to open the door), raising from ground when you reload, and so on, and so on.
2. Nothing "RPG" works - no rest even if resting is natural for the game (day-night cycle), quests are buggy and you can even lose a quest on fly (example: killing Naga is the first Ishad N'ha temple quest but you can kill Naga even without the quest and lose the quest this way - you will not be given the quest after killing Naga), uncooperating company, you can be attacked during dialogues and lose the dialogues this way, you can be attacked during leveling up, you can lose items forever by dropping them in the town accidentaly, "I can't carry any more" and throwing item on the ground instead of refusing to take the item (another source of permanent lose of an item in the town), many "properties" listed above, and so on, and so on.
My feeling is that W&W wasn't meant to be an RPG. Perhaps, it was meant to be a Quake that pretended to be an RPG. Overall rating on the scale 1 - 10: 3.0
Snad jsem toho napsal dost.

2. "Dead world"
I have to say, I agree with eveything you said, but I think you missed the point on "dead world". I think the original poster was refering to the city/town interface. How you enter a city/town and it is not a city, but a scroll bar. The mark everyone compares to is Wiz 7, where you could enter a city, walk around, explore, meet its inhabitants, then kill them. W&W had none of this (except meet them, and meet them, and meet them, ...)

As for what it was meant to be, many of it's problems came from the fact that it was going to be multiplayer (online). So, you would have probably played just one character, not the whole party (company).

3. "RE: Dead world"
1. I see. Nevertheless, the town interface isn't something that irritates me most. Well, it is a "scroll bar" but it is functional and sufficient - except for the possibility to rest. The inn or the tavern should offer this possibility. In the end, we should be in the dungeons or in the wilderness rather than loitering in the town streets. On the other hand, I agree that a full sized towns would be much more attractive than a plain scroll bar.
2. A multiplayer intent is no excuse for all those bugs and omissions in the game. Take Meridian 56 (or what was the name of the game). An online multiplayer RPG that did not suffer from so many bugs as W&W did.

4. "RE: Dead world"
By the "dead world" I meant just the feeling I have from the complete game. It is not just the the town interface. The best game I have played was "Champions Of Krynn" (SSI Goldbox serie), which had also non-3D interface in towns (well, not always - it was possible to make town on dungeon map as well).

It is probably combination of more factors (towns, cold looking 3D, empty dungeons, only rarely meeting NPCs in wilderness...). I cannot say precisely, but it does not look like being alive. There is something wrong in atmosphere of the game. Most of reviewers talk about bad interface - in my opinion it is possible to get used to it. The atmosphere is something different.

As for bugs - I use patch - it crashes occasionaly - the crazy dance still appears from time to time, but it is not so bad. The problems in design seems to be worse. Occasionaly I think that it would have helped if somebody (early in development) sit down and tried to spend a few hours thinking about the game: interface, design etc.

Well I am still early in the game , so perhaps I will change the opinion. I just decided to write my opinion when I saw that not many people frequent the board. Just to see whether someone else comes with his view.
