"Wizardry "One-time Events""
All,

I remember back in '82 playing Wizardry I on an IBM PC. Unlike the classic Apple PC which the majority of people seem to be familiar with, the PC version was slightly different. Graphics for monsters were different - a tiny bit better I think - and you could not use the "Identify 9" trick to cheat. Other than that, there seemed to have been several completely random "one-time events" in the game that I have never heard Apple users discuss. These included bizarre and cool monster encounters such as Willow-Wisps and others I can't quite remember.

Does anyone know how to obtain this IBM PC version of the game?

Also, I would be very interested to hear other examples of such "one time events" if you have experienced them. I always thought that added a lot of cool replay value to the game.

Thanks.

The Ultimate Wizardry Archives. Has all seven Wizardry games for the PC, as well as Gold.

You can try and check abandonware sites, but your likely to get frustrated. Not knowing the board's thoughts on such matters, you can IM me (should be in profile) and I'll drop a link or two. Doom is evil you know...

... are it is usually not abandonware. If you like it enough to play it, you should honor its makers by getting a legal copy.

If the archives are still available via retail channels, then that's the only way to go. However, collections like that don't seem to last too long on the market, I was luck to get mine when I did, and smart to have backed up all of the older games onto disks (Actually, I did that to install them on my old 386 laptop). If you can't find it in a normal retail outlet, then abandonware is the place to go. You could find it on EvilBay, but the makers aren't getting crap then either, and there's the distinct possibility of the copy being a pirate anyway. So why pay? I have many games that I bought and paid for years ago; but the original disks are shot to hell (All three Bard's Tale games comes to mind). So because of that, I shouldn't be allowed to play a game I legally own? Thus, I downloaded copies of all three (someone made a WIN installer for them, BTW), and backed them up. If Sir-Tech rereleased all the games into retail, and I needed a copy, I would buy it. Unfortunately, that isn't the case; the gaming companies pretty much ignore the market their older games can hold, and then sue anyone who decides to distribute something their not selling anyway.
