I'll add some obvious identifications:

No. 29 Queequeg's items for sale
No. 31 L'Montes' items for sale;
No. 41 Captain's Chest (on Giant Mountain) if Queegueg is given password
No. 42 Captain's Chest if Queequeg is killed
No. 50 Treasure on Xorphitus #1's corpse (Dwarf Mines)
No. 52 Smitty's Treasure
No. 53 Wizard's Lair closet
No. 54 Wizard's Lair jewel box
No. 129 Bork!

And a question:

No. 122 It's great if it's true, but has anyone ever seen one of the dwarves drop a lute? (It appears this happens in less than 1 in 500 encounters. What a shame that more monsters aren't musically inclined.)

actually I think that #29 is what Queequeg sells. He does not sell just six item however If you go to him over a long period of time the percentages that are on the top of the column play out to what he offers to sell you. He always has Mystery Oil but the other stuff comes and goes.

Question....
I just picked up Wiz 6 and have already beaten 7 and 8. I wanted to create a team to go thru the last three games. I built a group based on the final items which i wanted to have in the end, being Excaliber, The Avenger, Blades of Aesir, Elven Bow, Muramasa Blade, and something for my spellcaster that is going to get the CoC in CoDS. I just saw that it seems pretty tough to get both Excaliber and BoA. Is this true? I mean, to me, it's tougher to keep reloading and fighting demons again and again, but then again i haven't gotten out of the lower castle yet. can anyone help me figure out what my chances are of finding the best weapons???

Thanx

10. "Huh?"
I don't understand the question (and I have my doubts whether anyone else will). Can you clarify? Bela is a character you can encounter and fight in Bane (W6). He does not appear in Crusaders as a character you can encounter, and I have not heard of anyone saying "Bela" to anyone/thing in Crusaders and receiving a unique response.

12. "No"
No, it does not. Speculation is that Bela was intended to make an appearance in CODS, but that portion of the game was never completed and/or was cut. You cannot encounter Bela in CODS, and these treasures are unavailable in CODS, although apparently they do occur in the item list (so you could conceivably edit them into a character's inventory).

19. "RE: Wiz 6 Treasures"
Thanks Mike!

Just to confirm, these charts indicate that the following treasures will NEVER appear:

Basso Lyre
Cuckoo Call
Devil Stone
Faerie Cap
Garland of Roses
Heaume
Lightning Bolt
Lyre of Cakes
Mitre de Sanct
Seige Arbalest
Wrist Rocket

Although I have read other posts on the subject, I wanted to raise the issue one (last?) time to clear the remaining questions in my mind:

1. Aside of inserting them using a character editor, nobody has found *any* of the above items during gameplay? I myself have not, but I seem to recall people talking about getting Faerie Caps and Garlands of Roses somewhere in Bane. If so, where?

2. Some items do *not* appear in the treasure list, but *do* appear in the game, notably the Diamond Ring and various items that one receives *directly from* an NPC (such as the Key of the Dead, the Key of Evil, the Special Message, and so on). I'm sure this has been extensively tested, but might it be possible that some of the unfindable items are actually given by particular NPC's if a proper phrase is uttered? For instance, how did it come to be known that "I love you" yields a Diamond Ring from Rebecca (it's not even in the official cluebook, which is fairly complete)? While a text editor will display all of the item and monster names from the SCENARIO.DBS file, none of the other text of the game seems to be available. Could one of the programmers who have created character editors or treasure distribution lists comment on whether, in theory, it is possible to extract NPC dialogue and other in-game messages from the various binary files that make up Bane?

3. Some items, such as the Heaume, seem simply to have been left out of the appropriate list (such as the treasure given by Guardians of Ramm). I doubt these will ever turn up, except by editing. Other items, such as the Key of Nothing, appear to be meaningless artifacts which the developers forgot to take out (as a joke perhaps), that neither appear nor function in the game. Lastly, still other items, such as the Lyre of Cakes, appear not to work when edited into a game, and because of their unique special effect (presumably a group version of Helpfood in the Lyre's case), the developers never got it to work right and thus left it out.

4. Some people have commented on merging items to create some of the unfindable items listed above. One scenario, mentioned in another post, would be to use the extra rubber strand with another item to make the Wrist Rocket. Unless the other item was unique, this could lead to an "unplayable" situation: if more than one strand were used to make Wrist Rockets (if such were possible), then a band could not be produced and the party could not proceed to the Pyramid. As far as I know, no situations exist within Bane that prevent further progress, with the possible exception of having neither mushrooms nor the Dagger of Ramm after ending up in the jail cell in the Enchanted Forest (I've never tried it though). The other possibility is that non-special items could be used to manufacture some of the unfindable items listed above. The most promising situation would be to produce a Mitre de Sanct from a Mitre and either Holy Water, Holy H20(+), or an Ankh of Sanctity, none of which, in my attempts, has worked.

---

I realize that the overwhelmingly probability is that the unfindable items were simply left out by accident and can never appear in the game (except by editing). However, the existence of the Diamond Ring gives me some hope that another item might be available as a result of an exchange with an NPC. Further, I would think that a viable NPC would be one that appears only once and offers a single chance to utter a response (lest one manufacture unlimited copies of the particular item, which is only possible with Diamond Rings through a cheat). I can't recall every time this opportunity occurs, but a few come to mind: both meetings with Rebecca, the Bane King, and Xorphitus.

If you've made it this far, thanks for putting up with my ramblings, which admittedly will only interest some. As for why I still care about these minor mysteries of a game that is over 10 years old, I do not know. Nevertheless, any help or insight that anyone could offer would be much appreciated!

Thank you,
David

20. "Key of Nothing"
LAST EDITED ON Sep-15-03 AT 03:08 PM (Pacific)

You can find this item in the last area, Temple of Ramm. When you open a gate with the key of 1st test, and go around, cross the xorphitus ramp, open the chest containing the key of quandry (exact name? - haven't played bane in a few months) and then unlocking the gate on the same side you did it the first time (i.e. if you went east the first time, go east again) you'll go around again and find a chest containing the key of nothing.

Some of the items above are random (very RARE) drops from demons etc. in the temple of ramm. I found the faerie cap among other things. Never found a wrist rocket by the way.

I know this post is old but I have just recently started replaying Bane and am quite excited about it! I just wanted to mention 2 of the items listed above. Devil stones and wrist rockets do drop. Devil stones are ammo for a sling and wrist rockets are a thrown weapons (sticks).

I think you may have seen Razor/Serpent stones and Bottle/Skyrockets -- in any event a Wrist Rocket was meant to be a missle weapon that launches stones, not a thrown weapon. But if you did find Devil Stones (or a Wrist Rocket), tell us where!

I am 100% certain I found devil stones and wrist rockets, they dropped for me during temple runs. I could have sworn wrist rockets were a stacked group of throwing weapons, at least it definitely had the same icon. I don't think I ever attempted to use the wrist rockets though, just left it in my inventory with other throwing weapons, kinda regret not experimenting with it more now but I was hell-bent on finding an excalibur, which I never did oh well.

24. "Many different kinds of "Rockets""
There are bottle rockets, sky rockets, and the never-has-been-found wrist rocket. The first two are "thrown" or "used" items, like sparkle stix or icicle stix. The last is a sling. I haven't tried editing in a wrist rocket to make sure the icon agrees with its function (i.e., that it looks like a sling), but if what you saw looked like "stix" and moreover was stackable, I would be 99% confident that any rockets you found were of the bottle or sky variety, rather than the wrist sort. Too many people have played too long for wrist rocket to be even a rare dropped item.

That being said, I'd LOVE to be proved wrong. (And I'd send you out to find the Cuckoo's Call.) If you have a save, I'd like to see it.

25. "Wrist Rocket is a sling."
LAST EDITED ON Jun-23-04 AT 10:44 PM (Pacific)

It is 100% true.

stix:
sparkler (can be used for bash... bug?)
icicle
firecracker (can't be thrown... bug? but still holds the spell and can be just used)
bottlerocket
skyrocket

This is information from my editor. Never played Bane.

Wait for a while. New version of the editor will support Bane as well. I just stumbled upon *.pic format - a tough one.

P.S. Wrist rocked is unattainable. It does not exist in any of the loot records. Though it still can be gained through some encounter (like sword of 4 winds in W7), but I did't checked that.

By the term 'encounter' I mean Incident (some scripted encounter with NPC, device or environment).

Welcome aboard the Bane train, MG.
Yeah, I think we'd already concluded that the wrist rocket was unattainable - at least we have no proven example of its acquisition in the many, many years of the game's existence. Still, I, for one, always like to have the confirmation from the code. I look forward to what you are able to uncover about monster drop lists. (Again, I don't expect the writst rocket or, for that matter, the Cuckoo's Call, to show up.)

Yes, Cuckoo's Call is "orphan" too. As some other instruments. That is shame - makes bard less useful.

But those items can still appear from Incidents. My editor does not show "items from incidents" relations - this is another usefull thing to implement.

Mad god, I am so glad your new editor will support Bane -- thank you!!!

This topic, as evidenced by my previous post, has interested me for some time. Given the improbability of being able to "merge" these items, and virtual impossibility of monsters dropping them, my last hope was in what you call "incidents". I *still* have yet to hear how the first person discovered (trial and error, information from Sir-Tech, etc.) that "I love you" would yield a Diamond Ring from Rebecca. Is it possible, in theory, for you to go through the source code and determine all the possible "incidents" and if any produce items? I guess the incident would probably be triggered, like above, by talking to an NPC and uttering a phrase that is NOT obvious.

Any help you can provide would be much appreciated! And if you can shed any light on why an (edited in) Lyre of Cakes fails to function, that would be great too! (Also, I am still convinced that Faerie Caps don't drop -- or if they do, I've been very unlucky and the treasure table around which this post was originally started is wrong.)

32. "RE: List of "unattainable" bane items"
We won't kid ourselves that there is anything left to spoil in a game this old, so:

>ROPE & HOOK
Created by merging the rope and the hook
(Hey, some of the puzzles were a lot simpler back then. Although the engineer's puzzle required some effort.)

>RUBBER BRAID
Created by merging two rubber strands

>RUBBER BAND
Created by merging two rubber braids

>BOTTLE W MSG
Created by merging the bottle with the message

>BOTL W MSG+CORK
Created by merging the bottle and cork and message
(As those who've played know, if you don't put a cork in the bottle, it will sink, instead of floating to the isle of the lost. In my games, where I try to get rid of "undroppable" items whenever the opportunity presents - and I like to keep Mai Lai around - I just put the cork in the bottle, drop it in the oracle, and never pick it up.)

>FISHLINE W HOOK
Made by merging fishline and hook

>SILVER CROSS (though another available)
True, there are two silver crosses: one is "undroppable" and the other one isn't. It's actually the same cross, but it is "droppable" BEFORE you meet Rebecca and "undroppable" afterward. Since the cross is droppable when the queen gives it to the party, I expect it is the undroppable cross that MG is referring to.

As for the remaining items, I suspect that most of them were left out of the final game either because (a) they just weren't fully implemented (Lyre of Cakes, for example, which does not appear to work in CODS), or (b) turned out to be too powerful. We may never know. I just wish there was a way to definitively rule out the "creation" of these items, so we'd know when we can stop looking.

Thanks mad god! Wow, after all these years, this discussion is finally -almost- at a close. As Scary mentioned, it is well known how to create/obtain the items in the second half of the list, and the first half contains exactly those items I identified as being unfindable based on Aspen's treasure table. Mad god, is it possible, as with incidents, to determine which items are in theory "mergeable"? (I'd love to hear how you are able to inspect the source code, btw.) I agree with Scary that if incidents and monster drops are ruled out, merging is the only way (short of editing) that these items could find their way into the game. After extensive merging experiments (e.g., trying to make a mitre de sanct from what seem to be OBVIOUS components, if there ever was a clear-cut combine), I am of the opinion that these items cannot occur legally, ever. Either they were left out (due to being broken or unbalanced), or forgotten.

As for my part, I appreciate everyone's efforts, and I am really pleased that this issue has basically been laid to rest.
At least I know I'm not crazy after reading old posts where people are "sure" they found a faerie cap or wrist rocket

Yes, disassemble the code thoroughly. Well, not so thoroughly... Just find a piece where items are merged together.

Unfortunately merging information is not a game data, but hardcoded information. So it cannot be edited or changed as easy and completely as other things.

If I ever have a free time I'll look for that code.

I looked into the code and found nothing consolatory: except for thing mentioned I found only merging info for BROKEN SPROCKET with <removed to avoid spoiler>.

That is it. This does not garantee that unattainable items cannot be attained because of some easter egg or some code in other places, but I'm not going to turn over the whole code.

Mad god, thanks for looking into this! So I guess this thread is -finally- over...we now know what is and what isn't possible to obtain in Bane. Given the nature of the left-over items (nothing too spectacular, except the Lyre of Cakes, which doesn't work), I am pretty sure there is no easter egg waiting to be found -- the diamond ring is the game's easter egg, and is a worthy item. I suppose some more research could go into the probability of greater demons/pit fiends spawning in the temple, and the rate at which they drop loot from the "best" category in Aspen's table (2% is listed there), but that's about it. Also, I believe accursed ones drop the same loot as GDs and PFs. I do NOT believe t-rexes do so, even though I have read otherwise. Actually, I guess there is another task that could be done: verify the correctness (mad god may be able to help, if he is so inclined ) of Aspen's treasure table, and fill in the blank rows with the names of the monsters that drop those items.

Anyway, thanks again all!

37. "There's always more to do"
Well, I long ago abandoned any real expectation of finding my own favorite missing items. Now that MG's looked at the code, I can abandon my more absurd speculations. ("Wrist Rocket: what if I took the eyepatch (to make the pocket for the ammo), merged that with the extra rubber strand for the elastic; now, I just need something for the frame . . . .")

On the other hand, there are still other things to investigate. For example, I am curious about the encounter tables: what is the breakdown of a particular monster's likelihood of appearance. On the ground floor, rats are more common than giant rats; bats are more common than huge bats, which are more common than (my favorite) vampire bats; etc.; but what is the ratio and how does the game go about deciding? Does it decide first that you've encountered some kind of bat, and then determine which variety with, say, a 6:3:1 ratio?

Incidentally, someone already did the work on monster attacks, companions, etc. For those not familiar with it, here's the link (monster tables are down at the bottom):

Hey guys, be patient at last!
In a few days I release next version of the editor, it will answer many (if not most) questions.

W7 is much like W6, so if you are familiar with usage of my editor for CODS you will use it for BANE with ease.

I would LOVE to see a random encounter chart with probabilities -- not an easy task, to be sure, but perhaps Mad god's program sheds some light on the question, or will at some point in the future. Another question is the likelihood of getting treasure when in easy/normal/expert mode: if you fight more monsters of the same kind (say 3 pit fiends instead of 1), are you more likely to get a drop? My informal guess is no, but it's hard to judge these things when they happen so infrequently.

I'm not agree with you, djstricker.
There ARE nice items:
GARLAND of ROSES: (for warriors) -3 AC, +1 regen, 80% Lifeforce.

FAERIE CAP: (for faeries) -4 AC, +1 regen, 25% Fire, 25% Light, 25% Cold, 25% Paralysis, 25% Air, 25% Poison, 25% Missiles, 25% Acid, 25% Hypnosis, 25% Psionic, 25% Lifeforce, 25% Magic

CUCKOO CALL: mental attack - a good spell

Those items are very, very good, I think. It is pity they are missing

True...I guess I am coming from the slightly flawed perspective that any sane Bane-player creates an all-female party and outfits it with 6 diamond rings...which I don't consider an egregious cheat since you can do it from within the game, not by externally changing the data. However, from a "1 diamond ring" perspective, I guess these items are very high-end. And I never thought that a Cuckoo Call would be more effective than a Horn of Prometheus, but perhaps I underestimated Mental Attack as a spell.

42. "Call me crazy . . ."
. . . because my parties are never all-female, and I have only exploited the multiple diamond rings bug on a few rare occasions. (Most times, I don't get even one diamond ring, because my characters aren't willing to neck with a vampire, no matter WHAT his girlfriend will pay us.)

I edited the Cuckoo's Call into one of my games, once to see what it was like(replacing a Poet's Lute - fair is fair). It was very nice. You make a valid point vis-a-vis the Horn of Prometheus: its group-attack spell is certainly superior to the Call's individual attack. By the same token, the Avenger is a much better weapon than, say, Vulcan's Hammer. However, the Avenger (like the Horn) is not available until quite late in the game, while the Hammer is available by mid-game (once you get out of the Castle proper). I expect that if the Call had made it into the game, it would have been an early-to-mid-game item, and it would be quite powerful during those stages of the game: a weapon with endless attacks that can be made from hiding. It would allow me to do the sort of "clean up" in those stages that the Horn allows us to do in the end game.

Not that any of this matters: these items aren't available in the game without some form of editing. I just find myself sighing every now and then, wishing for the Call in Bane, CODS, W8 . . . .

You may add those items using my editor. Even design a monster that keeps the treasure or such... You can create new bard instruments. What I say, you can create a new scenario! ;)

Anyone still have the treasure lists as the links in this thread no longer work.

Thanks!
