"? on transferring characters"
I'm currently playing wiz 1 on the NES (emulated) and will play wiz 2 on the NES and wiz 3 on the PC. For obvious reasons, I will not be able to transfer my characters through each scenario the conventional way, but I would like to transfer my characters manually. I know how to do this using a hex editor for the NES and PC, but what I would like to know is What character's info/items gets included/omitted when transferring via the PC conventionally?

Also, which scenarios beyond wiz 3 can characters be transferred?

Any help would be appreciated.

1. "RE: ? on transferring characters"
the NES game was not made with the transfer of characters to a sequal in mind, so this may be impossible. not to sound mean, but it is difficult to transfer saves from games on different platforms (emulated doesn't matter, still a NES->PC conversion), and you will have to know the SRM or Save State Format.
personally, you'd be better off just creating similar characters for Wiz 2.

2. "May have misunderstood the question"
It's not my topic, so perhaps I should simply but out. Nevertheless, I think you may have misunderstood the thrust of the question, Dragon. It sounds like Jo is well aware that he will have to "manually" transfer his characters, by hexediting the save file of the sequels to recreate his characters in the new scenario. What I think he wants to do is to "stay within the rules" as he does so. For example, if you are ordinarily incapable of importing Lords Garb from Wiz1 to Wiz3, he wants to be sure he does not hex edit in the Lords Garb that his character acquired (presumably legitimately) in Wiz1.

I make this clarification because, judging by the number of posts and the type of comments I have read from you on the early wizardries, you are probably something of an expert on them (as I am not) and may be able to provide that information. It seems to me that what he probably wants is (a) information about any attribute changes, level changes, and spell-knowledge changes that occur upon transfer, and (b)information about items that do or do not transfer.

Anyway, good luck to you both. (Rats, no little "thumb's up" smiley.)

Yes, Scary, this is what I meant. Thank you for clarifying my question. I want to transfer my characters manually by hex editing the save game files and, as you say, "stay within the rules."

Ahh, Scary, makes much sense now.

first, you will need to make a save for Wiz 2 and 3. a save state for your NES emu, will be best here as SRM formats vary widely, and I am unfammiliar with Wizardry's SRM format.

Which items transfer into Wiz 3, is your Question. unfortunately, I do not know the item transfer rules, nor the character changes.

now, you had a second question

Also, which scenarios beyond wiz 3 can characters be transferred?

Wiz 1 -> Wiz 2
Wiz 1/2 -> 3
6-> 7
6,7 -> 8

don't know of Wiz 4, return of Werdna or 5.

5. "4 - No; 5 - Yes"
What little I do know of the early Wizardries:

4 - Return of Werdna - is a stand-alone game. While it uses the same sort of system as the other early wizardries, you are playing the "other side" - you are the Wizard Werdna trying to escape from the maze dungeon that has become your prison. You have the assistance of monsters summoned from various pentagrams throughout the maze and are confronted by parties of adventurers determined to stop you. You cannot transfer characters into or out of this game. (Although, I suspect a sufficiently adept programmer might be able to edit in one of his own parties for those that come with the game, so while playing Werdna, you can confront your former selves.) 4 has a reputation for being VERY tough (lots of hard puzzles). I've played it a bit, but never finished it, and I wonder if I could without the assistance of a walkthru.

5 - According to the instructions, it is possible to transfer characters from 1, 2 or 3 to Wiz 5. Characters are transferred at first level, without items or (I think) gold and spells. Thus, the only advantages of transferring are that you may start in a class such as Lord or Ninja that is ordinarily impossible for a starting character. I confess, I've never tried transferring characters to Wiz 5. The only times I have played it, I created my characters within that game.

6. "RE: ? on transferring characters"
Ok. I have successfully transferred my wiz1 characters into wiz2 on the NES (emulated), but a couple of questions remain. First, what I do know is with the PC version, items do not get transferred--no weapons, armor, etc.; everything else does, including gold and spells. What I don't know is, Is there an indicator in the PC save game file of wiz1--or wiz2, for that matter--that indicates that a character has finished the quest (chevron)? And, Does this affect aging when moving characters? I do know that without the chevron the characters do not age when moved; or, I didn't notice. Any help is appreciated.
