"Got Archives, Need sounds!"
Hiya,

I have just recently started playing Wiz V from my Wiz Archives stuff. Because it was the only Wiz I never actually solved, I decided that I was going to map it all out myself by hand.

I get to the darkness in the first level, and my machine doesn't show me the "ouch" when I walk into a wall (I think it runs too fast!) and I can't hear the beep. This is making it kinda hard to know when I banged into a wall, which in turn makes it hard to map.

Does anyone have any advice that I can use that might fix this issue? Or work around it? Or something?

As an aside, does anyone have any tips on character editing? I don't think I am going to, I am finding level one safe enough and rich enough in experience points that I am levelling up reasonably well. Just thinking I might be interested in seeing what I can make out of a character.... What sort of items are available that you never ever find in the maze, that sort of thing.

Of course, I might be really desperate if I lose an important character sometime, but I am hoping I be careful enough that it won't happen.

Cha!

Nemir

unfortunately, Wiz I-VI are all DOS programs. Wiz VII is too, although there is a Windows version available (Wizardry Gold)
as DOS programs, they are quite different to set up properly. particularly sound.
first, what Operating System are you running on? just plain DOS, Windows 95/98/ME, or Windows 2000/XP? for the last one, it's either VDMSound or DOSbox, for free ones.
for DOS or 9x, what is your sound card? as you likely need a little line in your autoexec.bat file, with the proper
Set Blaster=
line within. mine, for example, is:
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T4 P330
it is port, interupt, DMA Channel, Type of card, and something else I can't quite remember. obviously not exactly simple for the casual user.

VDMsound
DOSbox

You'll probably never see this, and in fact have probably figured out a way on your own, but here's my method: When I'm in a dark area, I face one direction, dumapic, map that square, then hold down the forward arrow until I'm running into the wall so much that I can see the "ouch" flashing on the screen. Then I dumapic, and fill in all the squares between the two spaces. Then I hit the k button to see if there's a door. This takes a while, and it greatly increases the chances of being blasted with bad guys, but it works. *JUST DON'T FORGET TO HIT K EACH TIME YOU REACH A WALL* otherwise, you won't realize there's a door there, and you'll hit a dead-end.
