"Opinions needed. Online game or single play?"
2fac91
I was just curious as to preferences of play. I am winding up over 2 1/2 yrs of online play in one game,UO. I think that is enough for anyone. I have been playing Torment the last week. I like it a lot. It is mostly the fetch and return quest type game. But it is not only hack n slash to accomplish that. Then I dug out my wizardry Archives game which I will load in this morning. I think I am done with online games. It is the exploiter and constant bugs that have left this taste in my mouth.
As I read the various sites I see no online game is immune from them. EQ is now having to deal with 3rd party programs as exploits. EQ guilds sit on item spawns preventing other players from getting these prized items. Then these guilds turn around and sell them on e bay as an income source.
AC is also having troubles with exploiters. While I understand human nature to "test" the game to its limits. I feel angry when that exploit is used against me. Admins of these games have their hands full. I don't envy them. On the other hand being a player in this environment is no fun either. It is a lose, lose situation. I will for now continue to play single play games as I have since '83. At least then when I get frustrated I can just turn off the machine.
Thanks for reading if you got this far. Admins if this is not acceptable to post then please delete.

Great post - and I think very appropriate in that we (Wizardry fans) would be the lobbyists against online games (if there were such a thing). I personally feel that online gaming has really taken away from the quality of games, and at least contributed to the lack of any really good RPGs in the last many years.

When you take the complexity of games and their rules, then computerize it - it becomes quite a task. Then add graphics, even harder. Now take this game and make it so 1000 people can all play at the same time - near impossible, without backing down on some aspects.

So we get games with cool graphics, maybe a good story, a decent interface - but gameplay just isn't there.

Too bad they don't have more AI in the games you are referring to. I wonder what these guilds/clans would do if the general populace (within the game) became an angry mob and overpowered them

3. "RE: Online game or single play?"
For me the main problem with an online game is that a computer can never effectively duplicate the experience of sitting around the table and playing an RPG with friends -- a computer can't currently (and probably for a long long time) do more than simply follow pre-given instructions -- instructions, and this takes away what is best about pen and paper RPGs: the sense that the game is evolving along with the players, and that the possibilities are limitless.

In single player game this isn't a problem, because the game essentially consists of learning how to best "exploit" the rules of the game: how to create a character that will best meet the challenge of the game (as opposed to pen and paper, where the challenge is how to make the world adapt to the character). Since you're the only one playing, nobody is hurt. However, like you point out, once you go into a multi-player environment, this "exploitation" always comes at the expense of someone else.

Just my opinion, of course. I tried UO briefly when it was first released and never thought twice about returning it.

OE

I see there is a problem displaying the entire subject line - I'll look into that today.

And as to deleting posts, we can use the rating system as an indicator for that. If a post has enough views and rating of "1", I'll look at deleting it.

I don't want to get into too many First Amendment battles, but I also think we should have control over what is and is not expected/acceptable.

SPAM, should it appear, will be deleted immmediatley (if not sooner). Advertising, done in moderation and good taste, of products related to the discussions, I think should be allowed

A note about SPAM (the luncheon "meat") - "It was first produced in 1942. It's been such a big success, they are thinking of making another batch "
