"Strange occurence when playing Wiz 1"
Hi,

I had a very strange thing happen while playing Proving Grounds earlier this week, and, while a reboot fixed it, I'm curious about what caused it, so I thought I'd post it and see if anyone has seen this before.

I'm playing UWA on Windows XP, with an AMD Athelon chip (not quite sure of the chip name).

Anyway, I went to the dungeon and had my lord (formerly my priest) cast both lomilwa and maporfic. After leaving camp, the screen showed "light" but not "protect". I know the spell was in effect, because the ACs all dropped. Strange.

In encounters, I never saw any of the action messages, just a reduction in the number of monsters. Once the combat was over, I didn't get the EP report. In additon, inspecting chests never reported what the trap was, so I couldn't disarm.

I left the game, and came back in. That didn't help. Rebooting did.

My husband thinks maybe it was something with the timing loop?

Anyone seen this before, and/or have any thoughts?

Thanks much,

Abby

How are you running Wiz 1 on XP?
no true DOS, so anything doing anything with the display will crash. XP hates any attempts to bypass DirectX for stuff, and DOS games want to talk directly with the video card.
XP is probably the problem. try on a Windows 98 system, and it should be fine.

Hi,

I just run it on XP. Other than this one problem, it's worked fine for almost a year.

I know that XP can run any win98 and 95 programs.

It's curious, because it's working fine again, and I've hand no problems other than this.

Thanks for reading and your quick response. Running on 98 isn't really an option at this time.

thanks!

you could try some DOS emulators, like VirtualPC or Dosbox (latter is completely free)
